View Full Version : With the injury to Utley, are the Phillies no longer the favorite in the NL East?

Or has that already happened? In 3rd place, three and a half games out, and now losing their best position player, the rest of the season seems like it's in serious question for the Phils... I think they need to make a couple serious moves to get back on top. How do you see the division playing out the rest of the way?

I'll never count them out. Their offense was and sometimes still is non-existent and they're still only 3.5 games back. They find ways to win games regardless.

It will be between the Mets and the Braves, the one who doesn't win the division will be a favorite for the WC.

Is this a joke the mets are choke artists thats there team chemistry they have changed three players since there collapses in 07 and 08 and you think that Jason Bay is capable of leading that team. The braves depend to much on Heyward and Gload who aren't gonna stay hot for much longer. All of the Phillies haters out there are gonna be in for a pretty big suprise come october when David Wright and Chipper Jones are playin golf some where and watchin the Phils go to there THIRD STRAIGHT WORLD SERIES.

I picked the Braves to win the division before the season started, so I haven't considered them the favorite all year.

You also have to remember though the Mets and Braves both had to dig out of pretty big holes. so yes they are 3.5 back, but the the swing in games is big. The Braves where 9.5 out at one point and are now 3.5 up. 13 game swing. They have been struggling for a while now so that 3.5 doesn't look to hot.

I don't get why they wouldn't be favorites still. Utley's not that good, they'll be better off without him.

I guess I should've said I don't feel there's a clear cut favorite right now. The Braves were horrendous in the beginning, the Mets went on a couple of big winning streaks (I know they were down in a hole early as well) and the Phillies offense went on vacation, yet only 3.5 games seperate the 3 teams. No one is really taking advantage of weaknesses right now. It seems like at times they all win or lose at the same time.

I just refuse to count the Phillies out of it because winning the division 3 times, the NL pennant twice and the WS once all in a 3 year span gets you some respect.

Are you saying the Braves have been struggling for awhile?:eyebrow:

I still consider the Phillies the team to beat. Nor do I count out the Marlins.

Ritz. The Phils don't have a good team anymore. Injuries, bad luck...whatever you want to call it, they are not that good. Just because a team succeeded in the past doesn't mean they will in the present.

Sure, it is still too early to count out a huge portion of teams, but we are about half way through the year and the Phils show zero signs of domination.

They weren't the favorites with him either. Where Eric Hinske goes, the World Series follows.

Jason Heyward hasn't even been playing the past few games, and besides the HR off Shields vs. Tampa Bay hasn't done much to help the team besides knock Nate McClouth out of the line-up. Glaus has been a stud all of May and the beginning of June, but has cooled off, but is still having a great year. Everyone keeps saying that the Phillies are 3.5 out, which isn't much, but they aren't a consistent enough of a team to reel off a big winning streak like the Braves and Mets both did. The Phillies rotation isn't very good after Halladay, and Moyer has been your best pitcher. The Mets have been a very consistent team so far this year and they will be there all year to challenge the Braves, who are in my opinion the best team. They are in 1st place without Chipper doing anything, without McCann doing anything, and with Jair Jurrjens just getting his first win of the year yesterday. Getting him back was like adding a front of the line starter for nothing. All in all, the Braves will win the division and finally be back to where they belong...On Top and in the playoffs.

Assuming the powers that be don't grant the loser a permaban, I think a blaze glory exit is the best method...i.e., flame the everloving **** out of the opposing team's forum. :laugh2:

The Phillies are not only in need for a SP, but also an everyday 2b until early September it seems. Their infield reserves are pretty awful, so they definitely need to make a move to get someone to fill in for Utley. He's not having that "typical Utley season", but he is a damn good baseball player and will be terribly missed in that lineup. This should end up being a really fun summer for the Mets, Braves, and Phillies.
