Add Earl Watson to the list of the point guards the Lakers are taking a strong look at, a league source said.

Watson lives in the Los Angeles area with his actress wife, and his first preference would be to sign with the Lakers, the source said. The Lakers are high on Steve Blake, but would prefer to not spend their entire midlevel exception, possibly making Watson an affordable option.

He is no Blake or Ridnour, but I guess if he came cheap LA would have more cash to try and lure a free agent big and/or wing so it would be acceptable.

I will say that if we are looking at defensive specialist PG types that will play for cheap, LO needs to get his *** on the phone like he did last year with Ron and call Dooling

I wouldn't mind Earl Watson. He's a solid PG and could come cheap

If we don't get Blake, don't be surprised if we sign Watson.

I don't like it. He has too much of a Farmar-esque game. These fast point guards aren't very suited for the Triangle offense (obviously if the Lakers stick with it anyway).

Quite frankly, I would rather have a bigger/strong pg that can defend big/small pgs rather than one that can score at will. Good passing skills are a must but scoring not so much.

Watson is known as a defensive PG and plays at a controlled pace, so what are you talking about?

You must have him confused with the other Earl ... Boykins

We should do a sign and trade, Farmar for Watson. Then we can keep the MLE in case we want to use it on someone else.

How's his 3 point shooting? That's all I care about.

Watson has hit 33.1% of his 3-point shots, lifetime ... Not the strongest aspect of his game, by any means ...

Yeah horrible shooter....won't fit in with the triangle. Play Sasha at the point and pick up a decent back up for KB24

Not a fan of Watson's. There are better PG's that we can get. That we SHOULD go after.

Agree that there are better PG's that we can go after, but not so sure if we can get anyone better.

He has other qualities though. He's a better than average defender, plays smart, doesn't really force shots, and overall is a pass first PG. He's definitely an upgrade over Farmar and Sasha IMO.

People here are talking about Sasha being our starter, i dont think that's a good idea. Even though he's a good ball handler, he would average way too many TO's due to having a poor basketball IQ.

If the Lakers resort to signing him, they might as well have kept Farmar.

Why is that? He is better than Farmar.

Can you assure Farmar a starting spot. Farmar clearly states that this offense does not fit his style of play, why keep a guy like that on our team?

Their stats are very similar considering that Watson played 11+ minutes than Farmar last season. Not to mention Farmar is 23 while Watson is 31.

And since the Lakers really need someone to spread the floor, Watson shoots lower a % than Farmar from behind the 3 point line.

Numbers doesn't tell it all. Agree that the Laker needs someone to spread the floor, however, that's not their only need. The Need a PG that can defend, and at the same time is a leader. Farmar does not defend well, and is a "Me first" PG who cares primarily about his stats. I see Farmar as a very selfish PG. IMO Watson will be able to lead the second unit better than Farmar, and play adequate defense against opposing PG.

I think when your coming off the bench, it's not such a major concern on who will run your team because either you'll have Kobe in the game and if not, most likely Lamar/Luke who are more than capable of doing so.

Steve Blake can give you all the attributes you just mentioned and even better than Farmar and Watson.

Id take either one of the three...

Ridnour & Blake- give you that floor general feel with an above average outside game.

Earl Watson- is that hard nosed player who would add defensive toughness at the PG position ( that an watson seems to play very well against the lakers everytime he gets the chance)

There is no doubt in my mind that Blake would be a better fit, but the lakers can't be picky. There is no gurantee that Blake comes. I'm guessing Watson is plan B. I still think Watson will contribute more than Farmar did. I think his defense outweighs Farmar's streaky outside shot.

Steve Blake would also cost thrice, if not, twice the salary of Earl Watson.

You're correct..Watson actualy plays defense, which is a need for the Lakers. How many times do we complain about our on ball defense against all the NBA's quick shifty gaurds? Earl is perfect to fill this void. We can sign someone else to do the long range shooting.

If for some reason we can't re-sign D. Fish, Watson would be a good backup for Steve Blake.
