Lakers eye Blake

The Los Angeles Lakers are smitten with signing free-agent point guard Steve Blake(notes), but sources believe Blake would have to take less money than the Los Angeles Clippers, Orlando Magic and New York Knicks could be willing to offer.

Blake finished the season with the Clippers, and sources say he’s intrigued with the idea of joining the defending champion Lakers. Still, Blake is a veteran guard whom several teams value, and he could walk away with a multiyear deal totaling around $20 million-$25 million.

He should be priority 1 behind Fish and Phil as he is the best fit for this team.

He can look like a chick if he signs on the dotted line and splits time with Fish like he is capable of doing.

Eh, don't know why people are drooling over him. I mean his #'s arn't that good. The only thing is that he is a decent 3pt shooter, but other than that he is crappy. I don't know how his defense shows, but looking at his stats does not convince me. I would honestly rather have Farmar than Blake.

Blake is a tried and true sure thing.

Need someone to run the break? He pushes well, makes great decisions (always has a great assist/to ratio), and can finish, pull up, make the correct pass, and is a great lob passer.

Need someone to run your offense? He feeds the post, runs the pick and roll well, and is a facilitator first.

Need someone to play off the ball? He can play the two, and in the triangle, his ability to move without the ball and hit spot up shots from anywhere is excellent.

Scrappy defender. Not great, but plays fundamentally sound, smart, and active defense. Active, quick hands, fights through screens, steers his man the right way. Helps and recovers.

And he's a winner. While his teammates got the publicity, he was the glue of his maryland team, and has carried that into the pros. Does whatever is needed. Played off guard with portland, and then played traditional pg with the Clippers. Unselfish. Takes good shots, and makes them. Not a chucker at all.

Oh, and he's mentally tough which is everything Farmar and Brown aren't as his game travels on the road.

beggars cant be choosy LOL. i think mitch would love cp3 to sign for the MLE but that will never happen, we have to snag someone who gives us a lot for less $. that may be blake, and it may not if he signs elsewhere for more money. but the point is, we are at the dollar store shopping for pgs, not some fancy dept store lol

He has always lit us up for three's when we played against him which is what we need a good knock down shooter that will hit the open shots when Kobe is being double teamed.

I'd love to have him on our side in the Rose Garden and let him light them up when they go to that damn zone.

i don't think we can get him. i'm almost certain he'll get a lot other lucrative offers. also, raja bell wants to be in miami and they have lots of money to give him. so, we should go after Tmac before other teams get him.

I would absolutely love this.

My top PG i've wanted this whole offseason.

He'd be the perfect PG to create plays especially in the triangle and would help spread the floor.

does blake play defense? im not very familiar with his defensive capabilities.. Coz if he doesnt, i think ridnour will be a better option..

Let's just say that when LA played Portland the last couple of years pre-Batum, he was on Kobe and Roy was on Fish until Outlaw got ready to come into the game

I remember the last game vs the Clippers, Blake had himself a good game and somebody on here mentioned he was auditioning for the Lakers. Whoever that was, might have been correct. :laugh2:

He is a solid hard working above average PG. He is though! He will love to return to Portland wearing the Lakers uniform and stick it to them!

Thanks man

Blake would be a great swap since Farmar is gone. He'd save D Fish a lot of minutes and help keep him fresh. I'd be pretty happy if this went down.

Yeah he's small, only 6'1. I just put his name up there as sorta the last resort. Blake/Ridnour come first that's for sure.

I am from DC and watched Steve Blake play almost every game for Maryland when the won the National championship and have followed him every since...

Point Guard is different in the Triangle, and I think Blake is a real good fit.
He has a little size at 6'3" although he is a little skinny.
He is a smart player with a career 3:1 assist to turnover ratio. Every point guard doesn't pick up the Triangle right away, but I think Steve would be solid!!!
He can get to the basket but his bread and butter is shooting. He is a career 40% 3-point shooter, and actually shot about 44% with the Clippers last year from 3.
He is a point guard-shooting guard combo, and in the triangle that is a good fit. You know Phil likes to have Odom "initiate" sometimes, sometimes Kobe etc... and that the "positions" are more flexible then in most offenses.

He is not gonna light it up... but is a solid, dependable, versatile, guard who can shoot.

If the price is right, I would be pleased!

The Lakers are also in the hunt for a point guard and sources in LA say that they're making a strong push to sign free agent Steve Blake. Blake had a successful run in Portland the last few years before being traded to the Clippers at the February trade deadline.

I hear the Lakers are focusing on Steve Blake with their mid-level and Raja Bell for what would likely be a minimum deal.

I'm thinking with all the big free agent buzz, Buss is starting to warm up to the idea that they need to make some sort of a splash. Especially with the potential departures of Farmar, Brown, Fish, Mbenga, Powell, etc.

Don't really understand what all your skepticism or sarcasm is about but you asked why are people so high on him. I think you understand our salary issues so that being said he offers very good value for the price.

I'm all aboard for that. Solid veterans for the bench who would give us consistent backup guard production, something we haven't had in years. Plus give us two knock down shooters from 3, a weakness from last season.
