View Full Version : Source: Contract extension unlikely for Dirk Nowitzki, Mavericks

Dirk Nowitzki is headed to free agency.

That's not a huge surprise, although the Mavericks were hoping talks about a contract extension for the nine-time all-star would come to fruition.

A source confirmed that an extension now is unlikely and that if the face of the franchise is to stay in Dallas, it will happen via a new contract in free agency. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/basketball/mavs/stories/062810dnspomavslede.1e02532.html

I like Dirk but hate Dallas, so him leaving would be pretty magical.

I highly doubt this is credible.

you really think dirk is playing for someone else next year? haha its dallas morning news!!

They said were were gettin shaq in his prime when him and kobe were having problems for steve nash, role player, and a couple picks!!

I wanna see a espn source saying he's leaning toward another team

If dirk is leaving Dallas then wade is leaving Miami... not happening

If it's true, then I see no other reason than he wants to leave. Cuban will offer him max extension, so I can't see what the reason would be.

I wish I could get excited as a Suns fan, but way to much would have to happen to acquire him.

I can't see Dirk playing for another franchise.

I think Dirk and his agent are just playing hardball. They want a big extension and they will get it from the Mavs.

I'll believe it when I see it, can't see Dirk playing anywhere else but Dallas next year.

I think Dirk would like to see what the Mavs can add, but he will be back in a Mavs uniform.

Welcome to Golden State Warriors, Dirk. Don Nelson has been expecting you.

I thought this was accepted weeks ago? Dirk will go into FA see if any stupid offers with virtually guaranteed titles, by having other superstars signed up, are available, if not back to Dallas Max contract. Simple

You know how mark cuban is, if he doesnt get dirk back hes gonna find a way to get somebody!!!!! Maybe Al Jefferson by trade but Dirk isnt leaving us!

and what IFFFFFF the mavs won the championship after Dirk left? haha you know how mad and upset he would be?

I mean we were the number 2 seed last year

I don't see Dirk leaving Dallas although no one knows what is about to go down. It is all speculation at this point.

This article is telling Dallas fans nothing new. Dirk opted out to avoid signing an extension because if he signs an EXTENSION, he can't get a NO TRADE CLAUSE. The entire reason he's opting out is to GUARANTEE he RETIRES A MAVERICK!!

So everyone not from DFW that is totally clueless of the motives of our star, stop dreaming. You're being played by the media, because everyone, including Cuban and Nelson, knows he wants the no trade clause. An extension would mean he's ineligible for one, and he's seen how expiring contracts get traded in Dallas.

He just wants to be sure he isn't traded late in his career for a young star, and retires on HIS team on HIS terms. Nothing more...

So, please, quit this misleading crap...

Yeah he will test free agency but Cuban will do anything to make sure he stays, and that will be offering the max.

You know, I'd have to see Dirk signing a new contract with another team IN PERSON before I believed that he was leaving the Mavs. I'm not saying that he shouldn't leave the Mavs...I think it's time he found a winning formula elsewhere...but I don't think Dirk believes that he should go elsewhere. The more I think about it, the more I'm certain that he's staying in Dallas.

He's staying, no way Cuban lets him go, those two are connected at the hip.

If Dirk leaves, that only leaves Kobe, Pierce
and Duncan as the only players to have stayed with their original team the longest

I really cant see him leaving. He is made to be a mav. It just seems to fit. This is possibly just his way of telling Cuban that he wants a better team and for Cuban to move his *** and sign one of the top tier players available. Besides even if Dirk did want to leave, you better believe Cuban offered him a hell of a lot of dough

No one can see Dirk in another uniform cause hes never had another uniform. duh.

Welcome to the valley of the sun Dirk, where today is cool, breezy 115 degrees.

Did you people ever think MAYBE DIRK WANTS TO CONTEND FOR A TITLE AND NOT JUST BE ON A GOOD TEAM? dallas has no shot at a ring, dirk deserves better than them. yea cuban is his boy, but business is business and its Dirk's legacy to play for not Cuban.

FREE DIRK!!!!!!

If MJ could wear a Wizards Jersey and Patrick Ewing could wear a Sonics and Magic jersey............................................ its not far fetched Dirk could be wearing different colors next year.. the league is a BUSSINESS

This basically means they couldn't agree on the years & money.... not necessarily that he is leaving.

This means he is going to have to use free agency as a bargaining tool and really put the choke hold on the Mavericks.

Maybe the best case scenerio is a trade of Dirk and Butler for Stoudemire and jrich.

Lineup Mavs
Pg.Kidd
Sg.Richardson
Sf.Marion
Pf.Amare
C.Haywood or Dampier

Lineup Suns
Pg.Nash
Sg.Butler
Sf.Hill
Pf.Dirk
C.Lopez

I know it won't happen but it helps both teams IMO.

If Wade was smart he would be calling Dirk and not Amare, Boozer, or Bosh. You get Dirk and some more pieces, and you got a great contender

All money equal give me Bosh & Amare over Dirk.

Dirk is the best out of those players, but at 32 the window of opportunity is limited.

ESPN doesnt even know whats gonna happen they keep changing their minds hourly. The only ones who know are the players themselves.

this is all about the no trade clause. nothing more. he couldn't get one with an extension per CBA rules, only a new contract.
