Kobe had -6 (+/-) And Ron Artest had +1
http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=300613002

This is why this a useless stat. And it shows nothing to reveal in relevant info on the game.

It's decent when comparing the different combinations of players on the floor, but pretty useless when looking at an individual player.

You mean like they swept them in 08? And Ariza didnt exactly kill it for Houston this year either.

That stat is pretty much useless. Kobe was the only reason the Lakers were even close to be relevant in that game. Pau Gasol is one of the softest big men I have ever seen play. Artest's "amazing" D has disappeared.

Kobe didn't get the rest of his team involve and played 1 on 5 most of the night. He deserved a -6.

Artest is talented, but he is basketball ********. No IQ at all. I remember him doubling Perk off of Ray in game 2 (the record breaking shot ensued). His shot selection is pathetic.

Too bad he can't make free throws, or defend consistently, or shoot jumpers.

its a stat that can be looked at over the course of a season, but for a small sample size, its totally useless.

Artest looks completely lost on the Laker offense. And I to be honest never really understood what that stat even stood for.

Aside:
LOL as an outsider looking in, I see a pretty consistant trend here. When Gasol has a good night, he's underrated and the one of the best PF's in the league. When he struggles he's the softest big man to ever play the game.

terrible, terrible, terrible.

I like Ron Ron, but he is disappointing me... He was a major defensive liability last night, he missed 2 insanely important free throws, his shot selection was terrible, and when he did get a good look, he hesitated, looking like he didn't want to shoot, but was going to anyway, thus making it an awkward attempt, even when he was just dribbling, he looked weird and uncomfotable. I think Ron is or maybe now "was", a better player than Ariza, but he has been so inconsistent defensively and so awful offensively, that I think if the Lakers had Ariza they would be better off. I still like you though Ron, but last night will be the last time I back you over Ariza.

Maybe this was Ron's master plan to sabotage the Lakers all along :D

Super.

The Lakers looked like **** last night. They all deserve -6. They didnt execute (they couldnt even foul properly at the end of the game.) All it was, was Kobe running around with the ball taking ridiculous shots (which he made most of them lol) This series got real interesting real quick. If LA wouldve won game 5 the series was OVER because there was no way Boston was going to take 2 straight in LA. I hope it goes 7!

BANNED? Why because i said something that was true? And something you didn't agree with? Get over it. This wasn't aimed at anybody. Just proof that +/- is a useless stat. I mean im not a Kobe fan but i watched every minute of the game and i realize that with only Kobe playing with any heart that without him they would have been blown out easily.

+/- is only a useless stat when used in only game like you guys are using it. But over the course of a season/playoffs it is a meaningful stat. I mean there are reasons why LeBron James has a +/- higher than say Erick Dampier.

Its not useless but its clearly more technical than just looking at raw figures. Quality of opposition and teammates should be considered.

On its own this stat tells me the Lakers outscored the Celtics when Artest was on the floor. How you can get upset with a stat that tells it how it is beyond me, if your trying to say that +/- is BS for comparison purposes then your abusing the stat for something it was NEVER intended to do. Least not without immensely more effort than you guys are puttin it.

Kevin Durant was one of the worst players in the league in 2009 according to +/-

Odom was +7!

They need Odom and Gasol on the floor at the same time. Artest and Bynum cant handle Gasol's interior passes or find him, and Odom and Gasol have really great chemistry and can both pass to each other in the interior which is hard to do. Remember in 08 when the Lakers ran up a 20 point lead in the first quarter? That was ALL Odom and Gasol. Phil and Kobe have to trust these two guys and get them more touches and more minutes because Kobe cannot win it all by himself.
