View Full Version : Izzo still unsure about leaving Michigan State for Cleveland

Highlight

Waitingfornextyear.com, a Cavaliers blog, is reporting that Tom Izzo will in fact leave Michigan State to become the next coach of the Cavs.
Izzo will reportedly wait until the end of the week to make the announcement, but it sounds like he's already told some of his players that he is leaving. Things could change between now and Friday, but it sounds like Izzo will indeed coach the Cavaliers next season, after getting an offer he couldn't refuse.

Can't figure out why he'd leave Michigan State. He is like the "god" at Michigan State and could be there for as long as HE wanted to be, in the same mold as Coach K at Duke. If Lebron leaves, Cleveland isn't all that attractive of a job IMO.

If he signs with the Cavs Lebron will 100% stay. The only way i see such a big name college coach leaving for the NBA is if he had the guarantee that Lebron will be there next season.

This is either a false report, or it means that Lebron is staying put.

Absolutely. For anyone to even consider the notion that Izzo would take the job without being 99.9% sure Lebron was coming back is utterly crazy. Izzo would be so scrutinized. He isn't that naive.

ottograham14
06-09-2010, 09:15 PM
Well they are giving Izzo probably around 5-7 million a year which for a first time NBA coach is just crazy. Also it is said that Dan Gilbert will give him a personal jet. Like Tom Cruise says "G5 playa".

Would you turn down double your salary right now and a personal jet. MMMMMM......NO.

Gotta give Gilbert credit, he is always willing to spend.

This could be a terrible move for Izzo if Lebron doesnt come back to cleveland, and if in fact its true

He will make more immediate money in the NBA, but we all know how long an NBA coaches career can last if they dont live up to expectations, so he is risking some long term security

i JUST read a report that said the complete opposite, that he spoke to his team but actually gave NO indication he was leaving, in fact he talked about how hard they all had to work towards next year's goal of winning a championship.....

for now ill trust ESPN over some random Cleveland site... but if true he'd be nuts to leave the college game unless he was sure Lebron was going to be there

I think its a good hire, the guy hasn't proved anything in the NBA but he gets it done every year in college.

I also don't think this will have any effect on LBJ, as the Cavs have said they haven't consulted him about any coaching decisions.

Professional sports coaching is not all that it is cracked up to be. You may make (if you are a top coach) 3-4 mil more per year, but there is no longevity. So in the long run you are making the same money, while not being praised like a god at the college and college town.

Now say Izzo goes to Cleveland with Lebron and does not win in the next three years, his gets the can.

I've hated the Cavs as long as I was old enough to know what the NBA was. If Tom Izzo is coaching them it will be hard to hate them any longer. Izzo is a great coach. If this is true, Cleveland your getting someone who flat out can coach. I'm a Pistons fan first and foremost. I still won't be a fan of Cleveland, but at least I won't hate them. I can't see them getting Izzo if Lebron is going elsewhere. This has got to be a great day for Cleveland fans if this is true.

Wow, if this is true I'm kinda upset. Izzo was like a legend at MSU, don't know why he'd leave.

He's like what coach K is to Duke. Problem is they don't have Lebron James yet.

Interesting hire, I'm not too familiar with Izzo's coaching abilities but he seems like a solid overall coach.

Maybe he can use those recruiting skills to persuade Lebron to stay? Even with this hiring I doubt Lebron is staying though.

This is either a false report, or it means that Lebron is staying put.

Its hard to say what it means. He interviewed at Chicago also. Maybe he cant see himself staying at MSU 10 more years and realizes he can make in 5 years at Cleveland what it would take to make in 10 years at MSU.

Its not like MSU was this loaded program like some other schools though. He's more of a coach that could compensate for disparities in talent.

I'll wait until someone other than a cavs blog announces this to believe it. It makes little sense to me. LeBron is dead set on making this whole free agency thing a spectacle. He's going to milk it for all it's worth. And Izzo absolutely loves his job at MSU. He wouldn't leave just for a shot at coaching Lebron. He'd need absolute assurnace Lebron would be there to agree to be coach. So I have my doubts he's already committed to the Cavs.

Interesting move if the report is true. At least Cleveland has proved it can get one big fish this offseason! ;)

But in honesty i like the move if it goes down. Gives some intrigue to a possible post-Lebron Cavs. I want to see what he can do on a pro level too.

exactly. i mean he's always had good teams, but nothing compared to the kentucky's and north carolina's. he was never a coach that relied on recruiting to be successful, he just knows how to coach.

Byron Scott over Izzo?

You mean a coach who has proved he can coach in the NBA over an unknown costing at least 6 million a year in Izzo who could completely bomb?

If Lebron stays with Cavs, I prefer Scott. If Lebron leaves, I think the Izzo hire would be better.

I honestly dont like Tom Izzo for cleavleand, Izzo is unproven on the NBA level, and while he might be a good coach in College basketball, The NBA is a totaly diferent game.

I hope for the best for the cavs, but I am just not a fan of this move, but ive been wrong before.

Rumor has it he will decide by Monday, if that is the case no way he goes to Cleveland. I put it at close to 75% chance he is back at MSU per some sources I have relatively close to the program.

06-13-2010, 10:20 AM
Tom Izzo did not say on Saturday whether he will accept the Cavaliers coaching job, and the team has reportedly contacted former Hawks coach Mike Woodson and current Lakers assistant Brian Shaw.

Byron Scott is another candidate should Izzo choose to stay in Michigan, though the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports that Scott may wait to see if the Lakers job opens up. We're hoping that Izzo will announce his intentions on Sunday but there are no guarantees. http://twitter.com/PDcavsinsider/status/16039044043

Their hoping he announces Sunday but it seems like Izzo still isn't sure. Doesn't help him that the Cavs are going to interview other coaches if he doesn't hurry with his decision.

He might not have a choice. I've been hearing that Cleveland wants him to make a decision quickly so that if he declines the offer they can still find another coach before July first.

I have a good feeling that he will be back at MSU next season. The team has yet another chance at a 3rd final4 in as many years. And more likely to win it this season.

Joe Dumars should offer him the Piston's job. A Cleveland team without Lebron would be one of the most depressing jobs in the NBA. In Detroit he would have time to build something from the ground up with Joe D. I always thought he was never an NBA guy. Now that he seems to have a door open to the NBA, the Pistons should offer him a contract (if he doesn't take the Cavs gig).
