The New Jersey Nets and representatives for Avery Johnson were progressing toward a deal Wednesday to make him the team's next coach, according to sources close to the situation.

The two sides have begun exchanging contract figures, signaling that Johnson is the Nets' choice to become the first hire of the Mikhail Prokhorov era, according to sources. Prokhorov, a Russian billionaire, completed his purchase of the Nets last month.

Johnson, who has been working for ESPN since his dismissal from the Dallas Mavericks after the 2007-08 season, was the NBA's Coach of the Year in 2005 and took the Mavs to the NBA Finals in 2006. He posted a record of 194-70 in three-plus seasons, good for a winning percentage of .735, and would be reunited in New Jersey with point guard Devin Harris.

However, Johnson remains a finalist for the coaching job in Atlanta, having met Saturday with Hawks general manager Rick Sund for his third in-person visit with the team. The Hawks are expected to make their choice this week, after conducting multiple interviews with Mavericks assistant Dwane Casey, holdover Hawks assistant Larry Drew, ESPN analyst Mark Jackson and Johnson.

Nets president Rod Thorn said Wednesday that he "has made no offer," the New York Post reported on its website. But a source told ESPN.com that something would have to go seriously awry at this stage to lead the Nets to walk away from Johnson. Johnson, who is working the NBA Finals for ESPN, declined comment.

Sounds good. As long as he doesn't try to micromanage everything, I think he'll be just fine.

He would be a good fit in New Jersey, and possibly in Atlanta too.

Nice hire, i think with C Lee and T Will they have some ability to really defend on the wing and Avery will tap into that.

Watch out man! I remember the Bulls waited around along time and then We got Del Negro. Hope that doesn't happen to you guys too.

It's like we are going to fall back into rebuilding if we don't resign JJ.

Our GM is Rick Sund, famous for replacing coaches with bad ones and getting both the coach and him fired. Why does teams keep wanting this guy for a GM is beyond me.

thank you, thank you, thank you......I was getting worried there for a moment...I thought the Nets were stupid enough to wait for Phil Jackson and lose out the chance of getting johnson.....then end up with nobody...
