View Full Version : Could Charles Barkley be a head coach in the NBA?

fadedmario

I think Barkley could be a coach if he tried to. I know he's a clown on TNT, but when he played he was one of the most fierce competitors the game ever seen. I think he'd bring that same flare to coaching. The NBA needs some charisma and personality in league right now, whether it's from a coach or a player. Can you imagine watching Barkley in post-game news conferences after a loss? Don't take this thread too serious, have some fun with it. In a day and age where everyone in the league takes themselves too serious, Barkley would bring some much needed honesty and controversy to the league.

IF Isiah Thomas had a chance to coach, so should Barkley

jetsfan28
05-27-2010, 10:35 PM
How is he going to tell people not to stay up late gambling? Or not to take bad 3 pointers? No chance IMO, very hard for a flawed superstar to do it, it's easier for a guy like Phil Jackson who didn't play as much so his flaws weren't as noticeable.

No way he just hasn't shown the discipline to be an NBA coach, none of the players would listen to him. GM maybe, but coach no way anyone takes a chance on him.

Considering he is a moron at being an analyst, and usually just calls it by his gut feeling, biasness, or personal favorites, the answer would be a resounding, HELL NO! I doubt he could call a play or analyze strategies to save his life.

05-28-2010, 12:35 PM
From what I've seen, GREAT players in most sports don't make good coaches. They were just able to do things most people can't. Legends aren't usually who they are because of x's and o's, it's just instinctual. How do you teach that?

ManRam
05-28-2010, 12:41 PM
No. And this is coming from an absolutely huge Chuck fan. I named my dog Sir Charles after him. I eat up everything he does...

With that said, I can't see him being an effective head coach. Maybe an assistant, but not a HC. I don't see him being a master strategist.

Can he be a coach? Sure, why not.... But would he be a good one? Doubtful.

Well said.

He struggles to control his own personal life, he has proven time and time again that he is extremely likely to give in to the emotions or temptations of the moment.

He could not mentor others if he cannot handle his own actions also I can't see him developing a proper training and conditioning schedule and developing on court chemistry and rhythm.

I am a huge fan of him as a player and think is personality is great.

I am a huge Barkley fan, but everytime he makes a prediction on a game I'm watching, he gets proved wrong, so i gotta think that he may not be able to make the adjustments needed to change the flow of a game.

Like I remember after half time of game one of Mavs/Spurs, he was like: "There is no way the Spurs can win this series". that had a huge number of turnovers that first half, which was uncharacteristic, and were still within a possession or two of the lead, and I thought: If they only had their regular number of turnovers they woudl be destroying the Mavs right now. Barkley saw that as pure Mav dominance and I saw it as; if you got 13 turnovers handed to you by the opposition, you should be up by 20.

So... I gotta guess as entertaing as he is to have talk, he just doesnt read the game that well.

in terms of knowledge of the game and that stuff he could absolutley be a coach but the first time he was seen out getting harmmered and dropping a couple mill at the roulete table then the media would have a feild day. he would probabley be a real good assistant though. i could see a guy like charles making a world of difference with a guy like michael beasley, if he had a 10th of charles intensity he would be a force. But with the money he makes for TnT and all his endorsements i doubt he would want to divulge into the coaching world, although i have no idea he certinaley seems like he enjoys what he does now and i imagine coaching a professional sports team is a lot of stess.

heathonater
05-29-2010, 05:14 PM
i think the problem with alot of great players being coaches is that they expect their players to do the same things they did during their career. i think he should stick to the tnt booth, because he, kenny, and ernie are the best halftime crew in sports right now.

superkegger
05-29-2010, 07:24 PM
I doubt it. He knows the game, but I don't think he has the work ethic it would take to do it. I mean, it's a grind, on the road all the time, and all that. It's a high stress job, and I don't think he would even want to work that hard. I mean, I guess if it was something he really really wanted to do, and was determined to do it, he could, but I don't see him having that drive to want to.

it would be cool to see Charles get a ring This is probably the only reason he would ever coach. Still, I find it highly unlikely he would ever take a head coaching gig. GM he's said he would do, but coaching probably not.

I would like to seem him as a GM though, his biases may prove brilliance.

The smartest thing he's said was that the Cavs should play faster. That's still not enough to warrant a head coaching position, but I do agree that if Zeke got the reigns, then....

let me get this straight, the man is one of the biggest clown analysts and always speak his mind and you want him to coach because it will draw attention basically? isnt he already dealing with a few "debts?" and you want him to basically get fined everyday cuz you know that wopuld happen, right?

I don't think Charles Barkley has the patience to be a coach.

that could be the very reason he wouldn't coach. He has the fire to be a good coach though. But in this very sensitive era of sports, where you have to really watch what you say or even worse, "TWITTER" Barkely would probably be fined so much he would go broke.

I think he would be a bad coach, but do I want to watch a team coached by him? Yes. I think it would be amusing for one season. The post-game interviews would be priceless. He is easily my favorite color commentator. He would make so many of the count-downs for best coach/manager quotes. And, after he is fired he would be awesome in some of those Coors Light commercials if they started using old basketball coaches instead of football.
