View Full Version : How many attempts would it take you to make a shot in the NBA?

Hustla23

A thread in the MLB forum asked how many at bats you would need to get a hit, so let's take a spin on this.

If you were on an NBA team and were facing an NBA caliber defense, how many attempts would you need before you could hit a shot?

Personally, I would need like 100 screens just to get open because I'm not fast enough or athletic enough to elude an NBA defender, and IF I got open, I'd have to shoot it really quickly before I got closed out.

I'd say 20-25 attempts for me.

question. Has anyone actually played on an NBA court, or even a major D1 court? Its not that easy. The openess behind the basket takes adjustment, and most NBA rims are so tight its not even funny.
Just asking. Cause if you grew up playing at the playground, or at the Y, it looks WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY different inside a major arena

I have on the Magic court and I completly disagree. And it's not like I took 1 layup and left but we actually played for hours taking 3s, freethrow shot, even halfcourt shots. I'll come back and fully explain my post cuz I'm on my iPod but the 1st shot I ever took on the court was a FT and I made it. 3s at first were hard and I prolly airballed but after a few attempts u get a feel for it. Trust me I thought it was gonna be ridculous hard but it's lke playing on a high school hardwood floor.

I have played on numerous floors like that, and it was odd at first. I am not saying its a different game, I am saying with a crowd behind the glass, people on the floor 1 foot from you under the rim or on the sidelines, and the rims, its a bit different than playing high school ball in rural Chicago

Give me an open look from 12 - 15 feet and it will take me 1 or 2 shots....if I'm covered than I may not get one off because I'm 5'6" and they are taller, faster, more athletic, been coached for years, and would probably block my shot.

Depends on when the 1 pack of cigarettes a day kicks in. And what position i am playing. At PG it wouldnt take very long at all. Im a complete terror off the dribble, left or right and can pull up full speed with a jumper as pure as Ray Allen. Not as accurate but just as pretty. Probably anywhere within 25 feet. Im gonna say i make my first shot because noone on the court, in a million years would expect the type of Hell i can unleash on them. Id porbably be in trouble after my first shot because i garuntee you im gonna make somebody look real silly and will have a bulls eye on my back after my first shot. It would be time for me to pass at that point.

If I was wide open on the block - 1 shot. Open at midrange - 1-10 shots. Open 3pt line - probably 20+, the NBA three point line is outside of my range. If I was defended by an NBA player at any of the above distances, then probably 100+. Just being realistic here.

haha, nah. Just takes an adjustment. My point was, if you took the normal basketball fan who plays a few times a week, and played in high school, and stuck him in an NBA game on that court with those lights and that crowd, they are gonna probably have major problems doing anything, let alone scoring.

I won't lie. I played varsity basketball on a New York State championship runner up team. I think it would probably take me 30-40 shots, because there is no way I could break down any defending point guards, or get any shot besides a HEAVILY contested three. Anyone who says anything under 10 is kidding themselves. The NBA is full of monsters, who would annihilate any of us.

The funniest thing I've ever seen was people in this forum saying they could beat certain NBA players one-on-one. None of us could do anything verse any NBA player or team.

hugepatsfan

I think it could take only 1 shot, or 100, or 10, or 50, or 1000000000. I'll be honest - I suck. Teams wouldn't even bother to cover me because I am so awful. I get dunked on all the time when I play (except when I foul - I don't like being shown up haha). I can't shoot. But even a bling squirrel finds a nut now and again. If I was open EVERY time, I'd hit one eventually.

The funniest thing I've ever seen was people in this forum saying they could beat certain NBA players one-on-one. None of us could do anything verse any NBA player or team.

But dude, its not like they were the best players in college, a level where pretty much all of PSD never got to, have insane conditioning, and have been doing this religiously for years

Anyone who says anything under 10 is kidding themselves. The NBA is full of monsters, who would annihilate any of us.

Well if you were left wide open its possible. Like for example, if u were playing with Wade, and he drew a double team and hit you with a pass, you're telling me you couldn't hit 1/40? I think it's possible if you were left open, but if the OP is talking about creating your own shot, then I'd agree with you.

I am going to say 4-6, but only because i wouldnt shoot anything but a wide open jumper in transition.

probably like 300.... even if i'm open.

I doubt i'd be able to handle the pressure of an NBA game and if it you're open enough to get the shot off, a defender is running at you which would be pretty intimidating. I doubt i have the mental toughness to make a shot at that level.

The only realistical way we can score in an nba games is either

What i said

wich is trying to draw a foul so you got Free trows.

Or

Just wait in the middle instead of going full back to defense and hoping for a steal, block rebound so you are the first in line for a fast break lay up ( or dunk if you can do that)

The disadvantage everyone here has is they will try and play by the rules and only take 2 steps when your allowed 4. But as crazy as it sounds, and ignorant as well..i geuss......The only thing stopping me is my conditioning. And the fact that i have to score. That means a lot. Without the option to pass im a average player. But with that option there are not many people in the world that can do what i do on a basketball court. I honestly believe that. And im 38. If i didnt start doing drugs at 11 years old you guys would be talking about me on here.

I don't think it would take too many. I don't know why they would bother guarding me. I mean, ****, they should be begging the 5'8" white kid with little skills to shoot. They would probably not even bother guarding me at all. So I'd probably make a shot as soon as I got over the nerves.

Your young enough to straighten it out. I am not a hard drug user but at 11 ,,,what drug isnt hard? You should at least give it a shot. I still think if i took 6 months getting in shape i could make a NBA team. Or even go to college. But thats my mind thinking that. My 38 year old body would have other ideas. But at 21????all you can do is try.

one at best. I'm reasonable sized [6'4", not like the nba's 6'4"], weigh about 210, so I'm not undersized, can get up over 30", and have a deadly jumpshot. Hell, put me in coach, I'm, ready to play!

If I was guarded, I don't think I could make one. If no one was guarding me, somewhere between 10-15 attempts, unless it was in front of a full house. Then I still don't think I could make it.

question. Has anyone actually played on an NBA court, or even a major D1 court? Its not that easy. The openess behind the basket takes adjustment, and most NBA rims are so tight its not even funny.
Just asking. Cause if you grew up playing at the playground, or at the Y, it looks WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY different inside a major arena

i shot a few free throws in the rose garden and made 3 outta 3 shot a few from 3point hit 2 outta 3 but with a defense guarding me i say a 5-8 layups with good enough screens from the 3 point i could get 3-8 with the right movement i got a nice 3point shot it also depends on who's guarding me if its nate robinson it would be a little bit easier because me and him are the same size i think about the same speed with him having more jumping ability....most people i play bball with tower me with me crossing em or gettin around em with speed

i suggest you quit smokin i use to smoke probley 3-10 blunts a day and 5-10 bong hits a day everyday for 5 years..... its really like shooting off fire works sure it was kinda fun for about the first 45 minutes then you realize you dont got nuthin to show for it except a little bit off stuff nuthin you coulda had without it....the money i spent i coulda easily had a 1993 RX7....but what i got is a mazda mini truck hahaaaa

it takes a week or 2 of non smoking to not really need it anymore
