Lance Storm (http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=150404) vs Nate Robertson (http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=425146)

Marlins: Robertson once again cruised along early, then struggled a bit late in a loss to the Giants on Wednesday. The 32-year-old gave up two earned runs on six hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings, but he cruised through the first five frames. Robertson allowed one run and needed only 52 pitches to get through the first five innings. In the sixth, however, he let the first five hitters reach base -- one on a dropped fly ball by Brett Carroll -- and gave up two runs to eventually suffer his third consecutive loss. Said Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez about Robertson's recent late-outing struggles: "We're going to sit down and put our heads together -- all three of us [along with pitching coach Randy St. Claire] -- and see what we can come up with, because that's not a guy that does that."

Cubs: Lilly did not get a win in his last start against the Pirates. The lefty gave up four runs on nine hits over six innings, including three doubles in a row. Very un-Lilly like, Lou Piniella said. Lilly is still building up arm strength after undergoing surgery last November, so he's still in Spring Training mode. The last start was only his third of the year.

Raaaaaaaandy (http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=448694) vs Ricky Nolasco (http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=445060)

Marlins: Battling the rain, Nolasco left some balls out over the middle of the plate against the Giants on Thursday, but he still turned in a quality start, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out three and walking none in six innings. He has now turned in three quality starts in his six outings. But because the Marlins failed to score a run in the first five innings for the third consecutive game, Nolasco came away with the loss. It wasn't a great start, but it was an improvement over the 27-year-old's previous outing -- when he gave up five runs in a season-low four innings to the Nats. "He hasn't really been the Ricky we've seen, but today, three runs against a tough opponent ... and he gave us an opportunity to win the game," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said Thursday.

Cubs: Wells had his shortest outing as a starter in his last game against the Pirates and was mad at himself after the game about it, saying it was "terrible" and "unacceptable." Lou Piniella told him even Cy Young lost a few games. Wells lasted two innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, on five hits and three walks. He walked the first two batters he faced in the game and they were two of the five runs to score that inning. Wells had posted quality starts in three of his five previous starts, so the abbreviated outing was unexpected.

Sloth (http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=452733) vs Chris Volstad (http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=458690)

Marlins: The 23-year-old will be making his seventh start, and for the first time since April 25, it won't be against the Nationals. Perhaps that isn't a good thing for Volstad. In his last two starts, he's faced and beat the Nationals, giving up three runs in 18 innings with 12 strikeouts. Volstad has made four career starts with no decisions against the Cubs. He has a 2.81 ERA vs. them.

Cubs: Gorzelanny had another strong outing on Saturday against the Reds, but again had little offensive support, trailing 3-1 when he exited after six innings. Gorzelanny allowed three earned runs and nine hits, struck out nine and issued one intentional walk. His only blemish was a two-run home run by Joey Votto in the first inning. But a bullpen meltdown in the late innings resulted in a 14-2 loss and sealed Gorzelanny's fourth defeat. Afterwards, the Cubs left-hander lamented his high pitch count. He needed 22 pitches to get through the first inning and 100 total. Gorzelanny was coming off his first victory of the season.

WHY NOT THIS YEAR!?!?!

wow gtf still hanging on with that effort. GJ. Backs are against the wall on this one. 6 out, 4 under .500, if they don't AT LEAST go 5-4 this homestand (hopefully 6-3 or even 7-2 to get over the hump and get rolling), they really are cooked. 18-23 when you're completely healthy and have had the softest part of your schedule pretty much spells either doom or some kind of historic miracle comeback. The division really would be out of reach at that point. 19-22 isn't THAT much better but at least its a positive step and it stems the bleeding. They don't need to turn it on and go on a tear just yet, but they can't have any more losing records over 10 game spans if they hope to make a realistic comeback and not some 2004 Astro like surge.

I can't even look at the standings anymore and it's only May.

The Cubs have to go on a serious run (15-5) with the Cardinals somewhere in there.

Thing is, does this team have it in them?

Inconsistency is one thing, but it's either double-digit totals in runs or, like, 2.

That BP has to be shored up. How exactly? I'm not sure.

Taking an expensive Z out of the rotation and into the 8th inning role with Marmol in the wings is really a joke if your SP and middle relief can't pass the game off to them.

Only people that live in the Midwest are allowed to bring drinks/food in.
You have to show your ID at entrance.

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/chc/ballpark/guide.jsp
Bottles, Cans and Outside Beverages: No glass bottles, cans or alcoholic beverages of any kind may be brought into Wrigley Field. Hard-sided coolers and thermoses of any kind are not permitted into the stadium. Sealed Bottled water is allowed to be brought into the stadium.

It's the same thing they had last year on the website, so I don't see any changes. Last year I saw people with McDonalds bags inside Wrigley :laugh2:

I would move Soto up but wouldn't mess to much with moving hot hitters around in the order if they are comfortable where they are and hitting well there. Its funny how protection in the lineup and comfort for a hitter plays into their production at the plate. Especially with Soriano, he seems to struggle if moved around too much. This is self defeating if you tinker too much. I also am a believer in hitters coming out of slumps and being "due". Lee and Ramirez have to break out soon, and moving so many people around may either delay that or throw more people off and into slumps hurting the production even more.

Its a tetris game where you have peoples actual mental approach to think of. If it were xbox or ps3, it wouldn't be a problem...but looking at order splits, you can see how sliding players up and down the lineup may not put them in a situation to be successful.

Funny, I remember people *****ing so much about Lou not sticking with a consistent batting order over his contract...now all people want him to do is constantly move people around. I am in agreement that Soto should be moved up...but I wouldn't do much more than that.

i do think that some players struggling need a sit. Ramirez on the bench should be happening soon, just to clear his head and give him some time in the cages without the rush to the field after the fact. It did Soto wonders when he missed a game or two and hit the cages. Call it coincidence or what ever but it happened and he came out blazing since.

IMO, soriano is one guy that the cubs have figured, even just from his career with the cubs, not to move around too much in the lineup. I am sure you have seen it as well over the last couple years, the attempts to move him and him failing. He is doing well in his current spot...I wouldn't mess with a good thing in this case.

I am sure you have seen it as well over the last couple years, the attempts to move him and him failing. He is doing well in his current spot...I wouldn't mess with a good thing in this case.

Sample size. Anyone can suck in a small sample size.

What the ****? I wasn't being a grammar Nazi. I was saying no way should Castro be the 2 hole option over Soto.

Jesus Christ dude.

He said:

So I said:

Because no way should Castro be given a shot at the 2 hole before Geo. Geo is the FAR superior hitter.

I'm not a grammar Nazi unless it's unreadable or the person decides to call someone an idiot without actually having the ability to spell basic words correctly.

It looked like you were just being the grammar police, my bad.

its the career splits, not just splits from his time with the cubs:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?n1=soriaal01&year=Career&t=b

I always look at splits before discussing batting order moves. Its amazing how they hold true with players for the most part; whether its a mental issue, protection around them or whatever...

I mean, hell, soriano mentally struggled at the plate after his move to LF.

In 9 AB's, the top of our order has seen 21 pitches. That's cool.

Because Castro is 20 and Fonty isn't?

Pretty crucial the Lilly doesn't get rattled here and just rely on the stuff that's allowed him to dominate the last 6 innings.

Mell413
05-10-2010, 09:16 PM
Because Castro is 20 and Fonty isn't?

That's not really the point. Fontenot is a plus defender and people like to point out every error he makes. Those are fairly routine plays he's messing up too.

05-10-2010, 09:16 PM

I can't stand Fontenot, plus defender or not. People were comparing him to Dustin Pedroia, which was just laughable.

turnaround3
05-10-2010, 09:17 PM
Guarantee you Castro was stoked just to be able to catch that popup. Infielders at any level of the game always want the chance to start making up for their errors right away. It can hinder you at the plate, but it's tough to foul up a play as routine as the pop out he just had, so it should help his confidence, if only slightly.

There was some groaning right after the play, probably just because he was safe. But I didn't hear boos.

It's laughable to make now, but after the 08 season not so much. I'm not saying Castro has to be perfect, but I don't think he should get a free pass because he's 20 either.

Ya, thats exactly what I'm talking about. He is an average baseball player that people were trying to make out to be much more.
