Cubs: Silva was to get an extra day of rest between starts because the Cubs had considered giving him a cortisone shot in his right wrist. He's been bothered by a sore wrist injured during an at-bat in New York on April 21. But the Cubs decided he didn't need the shot, so he's staying on track. In his last start against the D-backs, he gave up five runs on eight hits over five innings, his shortest outing of the season. But he said the wrist wasn't a problem. Silva did strike out six but also served up three homers.
Reds: Bailey threw a career-high 121 pitches during a no-decision in a 6-3 loss to the Cardinals on Saturday. He pitched 6 2/3 innings with three runs (two earned) allowed on seven hits. He walked three and struck out six. His final batter was Albert Pujols and with a runner on second base and first base open, he was given the chance to pitch to him. Bailey missed his spot and Pujols lined a 3-2 split-fingered fastball for an RBI double to left field that gave St. Louis a 2-1 lead.

Tom Gorzelanny (http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=452733) vs Aaron Harang (http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=421685)

2.48......ERA.....6.68

Cubs: Gorzelanny finally picked up a win in his last outing against the D-backs. The lefty set a career high with 10 strikeouts, topping his old mark of nine, which he had done twice, including Sept. 21, 2009, at Milwaukee. The difference, Gorzelanny said, was his ability to control the fastball. In previous outings, when he tried to elevate it, he felt as if he was throwing over the screen. This time, he put it exactly where he wanted. He's posted three quality starts in his five games so far.
Reds: Showing positive signs that he is still willing to be aggressive with his fastball and work ahead, Harang gave the Reds his second straight quality start on Sunday at St. Louis but still took the loss in a 6-0 game. Over six innings, Harang allowed three earned runs and seven hits -- he did not walk a batter and struck out six. The nice outing was trumped by a superlative one by Chris Carpenter, who worked seven scoreless innings while giving up only two hits. "I feel like I've made some definite strides," Harang said. "I've been more aggressive with the fastball, moving the ball in and out and around the zone the way I want to."

Ryan Dempster (http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=133225) vs Mike Leake (http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=502190)

2-2......W-L.......2-0
2.95......ERA.....2.94
39.........K's.........22
11.......BB's.......16

Cubs: Dempster took the loss in his last start against the Pirates, giving up three runs on eight hits over seven innings. The right-hander struck out seven, and now has 1,405 career Ks. Among the eight hits were two home runs, but the biggest problem was a lack of run support, as the Cubs stranded 11 in the loss. Maybe pitching in Cincinnati, where he once played, will help get him back on track.
Reds: Leake gave the Reds his fourth quality start in five big league games but did not get into the seventh inning for the first time. In a 3-2 Reds win over the Mets in 11 innings, Leake was solid with six well-pitched innings. Just one of his two runs allowed were earned, while he walked one and struck out four. He was at 100 pitches when lifted for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the sixth.

WHY NOT THIS YEAR!?!?!

Unless our guys get it together and quick, this could be an ugly series. I think we win 1 at best, possibly swept. Back to back sweeps by the Pirates and Reds would almost make me give up (not completely, but it would almost kill the season)

We are so streaky, and we are facing two struggling pitchers and then Dempster pitches the final game. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say we win all 3.

i know there is a lot of pessimism going around right now, but i think they take at least 2/3 with a chance to take all 3. 2 pitchers throw a gem and we lose a close, but high scoring game.
