Boston Celtics guard Nate Robinson was benched for two games near the end of the regular season, and it cost him $1 million, while saving the team twice that amount.

A clause in Robinson's contract calls for him to make a $1 million bonus if he both played in at least 58 games and made the playoffs this season. Robinson's Celtics are in the postseason, but he finished having played in 56 games, two shy of the specified number. As a result, the Celtics save the $1 million they would have paid Robinson -- equivalent to a quarter of his reported annual salary -- and an additional million they would have owed in luxury tax to the NBA (most of which would have been distributed to teams with payrolls below the luxury tax threshold).

The 5-foot-9 guard, a three-time slam dunk champion, had a difficult season, but was on track to make the bonus until the season's final days.

He missed nearly the entire month of December, when he was playing in New York, after a series of disputes with Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni. One of the precipitating events came in a Nov. 21 game at New Jersey when Robinson playfully launched a jump shot at the wrong basket as the first quarter expired.

The Knicks traded Robinson to the Celtics at the trade deadline, and he first suited up for Boston on Feb. 23. To reach 58 games played, he would have had to play in every remaining game. His playing time was sporadic, but with 10 days left, he remained on track, having played in 20 straight games. Robinson has averaged 15 minutes per game as a Celtic.

He missed an entire game, and a big payday, when the Celtics' beat their current playoff opponent, the Cavaliers, on April 4. The Celtics played their starters long minutes that day, and were also working Michael Finley -- a veteran bench scorer, like Robinson -- into the rotation. Robinson dressed, but did not see action.

Robinson played two nights later, against the Wizards, before getting another "Did Not Play -- Coach's Decision" in the box score on April 7 against the Raptors. Robinson then played in the regular season's final four games. The Celtics went 1-3 in those games.

Nate is not garbage.. He is a streak scorer.. If he is utilized the same as a JR Smith or J Terry , Crawford he will succeed. He's not a pg. But he can light it up any given night.

This is the type of thing I hate about incentive laden contracts that can be controlled by management. I'm not a huge Nate fan, but come on.....contracts are agreed to in good faith. Other players can take a look at this and refuse incentive contracts with the Celtics for playing games like this.

If he didn't shoot at the wrong basket with the Knicks, he would have had the required game in.

It's not the Celtics fault though. Nate brought this upon himself for blowing a whole month in New York.

While Im sure Boston took advantage of the situation this is really on Mike the Jerk D'Antoni. If he hadn't screwed off Nate for a month this would've never happened.

Im sure he got some satisfaction in sticking it to Nate one last time though.... thanks Mike!

But there is no chance anyone is putting him at 5'9(but is probably closer to 5'7) in the SG position.

It makes you wonder about all that time Mike D sat him NY. Did that increase his trade value? I think so...

Knciks definitely got the better end of that deal...Walker is the real deal. Too bad the C's never really played him. Thanks Celtics! Oh, and by the way you can do us one more favor...beat the Cavs!!!!!!

Well if he wasn't traded to the playoff bound Celtics he wouldn't have been eligible anyways. At least he's competing for a ring.
