Game 1 (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/preview?gid=2010050105)

LeBron James famed right elbow won’t be the only one drawing attention.

Bitter enemies, the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers are about to exchange elbows, shoves, insults and baskets in the NBA playoffs.

This reunion won’t be peaceful.

“We don’t like them, they don’t like us,” Cavaliers guard Mo Williams(notes) said. “It’s obvious.”

It’s on. Again.

For the second time in three years, the Cavaliers and Celtics will meet in the Eastern Conference semifinals, renewing a sweltering rivalry that has grown with intensity and will be ratcheted up to a new extreme when the clubs open the best-of-seven series on Saturday beneath a fire-spewing scoreboard inside Quicken Loans Arena.

Forget the buzzer.

Maybe a ring-side bell would be better to signal the end of each quarter.

“It’s going to be a good heavyweight fight,” Boston’s Paul Pierce(notes) said.

The Celtics and Cavs, who played a knock-down-drag-out series won by Boston in seven games two years ago, have been pummeling each other for some time.

A few years back, Pierce spit in the direction of Cleveland’s bench during an exhibition game. Last October, the teams got into a minor fracas during a preseason game in Columbus, Ohio, when Mo Williams retaliated with an elbow after being flung to the floor by Celtics forward Shelden Williams(notes), who just happens to be the brother-in-law of Cleveland forward Anthony Parker(notes).

Even James’ mom, Gloria, once got into it with Pierce, screaming at him after he wrapped up her baby boy on a breakaway dunk during the 2008 playoffs.

Tempers flared during the team’s previous meeting on April 4. Down by 22 points in the third quarter, the Cavaliers stormed back before losing 117-113 in a game that featured six technical fouls, the ejection of Cavs coach Mike Brown and some animated, R-rated trash talk between James and Boston’s Kevin Garnett(notes) and Tony Allen(notes).

“They do a lot of talking,” James said. “At some point in time they back it up, too. We’re looking forward to it. We’re not much of a talking group, but we’re not going to back down from anybody. It’s going to be a really fun, really physical series.”

James, who will accept his second straight MVP trophy on Sunday in Akron between Games 1 and 2, is entering the series with an injured right elbow that he says has been bothering him on and off for weeks. An MRI exam revealed a sprain and bone bruise, and James will wear a padded, protective sleeve to help absorb any contact.

On Friday, he didn’t seem bothered by the elbow while shooting mid-range jumpers during the portion of Cleveland’s practice that was open to the media. The mystery surrounding James’ injury provided a sexy subplot leading into the series, but Boston players are wary.

“I figure this,” Pierce said, “LeBron with a bad elbow is still better than 95 percent of the league. So it doesn’t matter.”

Two years removed from their 17th NBA title, the Celtics are coming in as healthy as they’ve been in months and with renewed confidence after steamrolling through Miami in the first round.

Boston’s depth and defense were too much for the Heat, whose only win in the series came when Dwyane Wade(notes) scored 46 in the playoff game of his career.

James and the Cavaliers present many more problems.

“LeBron’s a different beast,” Garnett said. “He’s obviously with a better cast than D-Wade. I think D-Wade is one of the best one-on-one players in our game. That’s true with LeBron but I think LeBron defers more to his teammates a little bit, with his supporting cast than D-Wade.”

James has never had more help.

Two years ago, he pushed the Celtics to a Game 7 without Williams or Shaquille O’Neal(notes) or Antawn Jamison(notes), who has become Cleveland’s No. 2 option on offense.

And it didn’t take Jamison, acquired in a deadline trade from Washington, long to appreciate the extent of the Cavaliers-Celtics blood feud.

His fourth game with Cleveland was in Boston on Feb. 25, when O’Neal sustained a torn thumb ligament on a block by Celtics center Glen Davis(notes). O’Neal later underwent surgery and the injury took on added life when TV replays appeared to show Davis grabbing and twisting Shaq’s thumb.

O’Neal doesn’t think Davis tried to intentionally hurt him and said he’s not drawing any extra motivation because the Celtics are next on Cleveland’s climb toward a first title.

“The only incentive I’m worried about is the final goal,” O’Neal said. “We know they’re a tough team. We know they’re chasing the same thing that we’re chasing. We just have to keep our heads, keep our composure and do what we’re supposed to do.”

Jamison said the experience of his first two Boston-Cleveland games prepared him for what’s to come. He knows that the Celtics, given up as too old to contend before the playoffs began, would like nothing more than to knock out the Cavaliers.

“They want to prove to everybody that they still have a lot left in the tank,” Jamison said. “No team is going to give an inch. We’re going to fight to the end and they are going to do the same. It’s going to be fun to be a part of. There’s going to be a lot of bumps and bruises, but this is what it’s all about.”

The way this series is scheduled is very spaced out, so you might get a chance if they go to 7 games. Sat/Mon/Fri/Sun are the first four games. If you're back following that Sunday Mother's Day matchup you could catch Game 5 or a potential game 7.

James has been real conceited about his team all year, in the Bulls' series, and even now:

“They do a lot of talking,” James said. “At some point in time they back it up, too. We’re looking forward to it. We’re not much of a talking group, but we’re not going to back down from anybody. It’s going to be a really fun, really physical series.”

He's going to have a hard fall back down to Earth when we take Game 1 tonight. :moon:

Rondo played a great first half, but as a C's fan, I'm concerned this is how 3 out of 4 games between them went. First half dominated by C's, 2nd half dominated by Cleveland, with a split of the season series. I just hope the C's will find a way to win tonight, and not blow a double digit lead in the 3rd quarter like they did all season.

Also, what are the chances that the ref who called an offensive foul on Lebron gets fired for doing that? I would think Stern is going to have some "stern" words for him in the morning .... lol.

I'm going to the game tonight. The Cavs aren't going to lose a home game in this series.

Don't know if you're checking PSD from a handset at the game or not, but your boys better turn things around in the 2nd half if you want that prediction to remain true.

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about and saw absolutely none of their regular season meetings. Celtics outplayed the Cavs the first 3 quarters for 3 out of the 4 regular season games and now 1 game of the playoffs. That's no fluke. The refs weren't all to blame, but a lot of bad calls were huge for the Cavs:

Rondo's charge on Mo in the 1st half. Clearly Mo was moving and not set and replays and Reggie Miller agreed it was a horrible call. Wiped 2 points (possibly 3 on the and 1) away. Also made Rondo come out of the game late in the 3rd with 4 fouls.

Out of bounds late in the 4th that never touched Big Baby on the replay went the Cavs way.

Shaq's tip in on an offensive interference. Ball never even came out of the cylinder on the bench side and he tipped it back in before it had come back out over the rim. The overhead cam that showed the replay right before the commercial was very clear. +2 for the Cavs.

No one's biased against the Cavs - people just hate LeBron being so full of himself when he has accomplished so little. Stats don't mean **** if you have no rings - it's why Pierce was hated until he won. It's why Russell is so well respected despite never having Wilt #s. Don't get me wrong. There have been series in the past that have been decided by poor officiating.

I'll need to look at the replay for the so called Rondo offensive foul. I think the whole two feet set is more of a rule of thumb than the words written down on paper. I say this because multiple times this season I've seen officials call offensive fouls with guys back peddling or still moving their feet. The defender beat the offensive player to the position first and the offensive player initiated the contact. That to me is an offensive foul, regardless of whether those feet are set.

You might be talking about the Perkins play? The one where he got called for it and walked a quarter of the court with ball before giving it up? I'll have to see that again.

I'll say that refs set themselves up for mistakes by not moving with the play properly and getting the right angles (even with three out there).

We had to know we weren't getting calls on the road. I just wish they weren't so damaging. The Rondo charge wiped 2-3 points off, and made us use Tony Allen late in the 3rd instead of Rondo, who was our best player. It also made him layoff on defense late in the game, like when Lebron drove on him.

We also blew it by:

-Our bench not showing up except for Tony Allen

-Doc only used veteran Michael Finley 3 minutes when we could have used him

-Doc bringing in KG and Pierce a little too late in the 4th. Lebron played the entire 2nd half, as he usually has to for the Cavs to win. We needed out best guys out there too, but Doc if famous for leaving the wrong guys out there too long. Big Baby sucked tonight.

no substance????

i never knock fans for hating who they want to hate (i hate some guys), but ridiculous comments are never a good thing........

I mean in a sense of he is portrayed as a great winner by the media, but he hasn't won. Maybe all hype and no results (championship wise) was a better way to say it.

No one's biased against the Cavs - people just hate LeBron being so full of himself when he has accomplished so little. Stats don't mean **** if you have no rings - it's why Pierce was hated until he won. It's why Russell is so well respected despite never having Wilt #s. It's why Jordan is the best ever (his stats alone wouldn't have done it). Right now, at this point, LeBron's career is all style and no substance, but he is portrayed as the coming of basketball Jesus. That pisses off REAL fans.

i saw you commenting about his post game interview. the game is over. why would you waste your time watching the postgame?

real fans care about the basketball and not the show?

yes he hasn't won a title, but it isn't because he gags when it counts the most....results have to consist of something else besides rings....

Are you serious? The interview was like 2 seconds after the game. By the time I found the remote to turn the TV off it was practically over. And I meant REAL fans as in people that like team success and accomplishment rather than personal stats (because that's what sports are about).

But he is hyped up to a ridiculous level - to the point where his rings do matter. If he hypes himself up to the extent above everyone else that he does (and he promotes himself like no other), then he should be held to a higher standard - he welcomes it through his actions.

Stop acting like a dick. Yes the Cavs have won - my problem is that if the Cavs win it all no one will care about the logo, they will talk about what it means for LeBron. People that do that (talk about individuals over the team) are missing the true meaning of competitive sports. I know people have favorite players, but I'd rather watch a great team w/ few stars (Pistons in 2004) than a human highlight reel who loses in the 2nd round (and don't take this as me saying Lebron and the Cavs will lose - I'm speaking generally).

try not to be so hooked on lebronism.
cavs have one legitimate superstar, mo williams (all star last year), jamison (2x all star), shaq (way past his prime), big z (out of his prime) and a bunch of role players. it's not like the cavs are stacked. they play a very good scheme for what they have and use their role players well.

I'm not hooked on Lebronism - I hate the way so many others are. Sports are about TEAMS not individuals. Your right - the Cavs have a lot of good players that play important roles. People should be talking about that, not what this postseason means for LeBron's personal career. People that get too caught up in "Lebronsim" (great word to describe it) are losing sight of the REAL meaining of competitive sports.

Right if they replaced every LeBron's elbow comment with hustle by Varejao or great read by AP, they'd have some variety in their commentary. I think a lot of it has to do with LeBron being the face of that franchise. I know folks talk about Durant a lot during OKC games, Wright and Jeter during Mets and Yankees games, Drew piece of **** Brees during the Superbowl. As annoying as it is, that's what the business is. If it didn't sell, they wouldn't be doing it.

But even on past championships teams guys, the everyday role player has gotten his due. For example.

Jordan has 6 titles. Of the 93 title, everyone talks about the "Paxson shot". Of the 97 title, they talk about Steve Kerr's shot in the game 6 clincher. Guys like Dennis Rodman have been give credit for their rebounding and their tenacious play. Guys like TOni Kukoc, Scottie Pippen, Ron Harper etc. etc.

Of the 3-peat Lakers earlier in the decade, Shaq was the main guy, Kobe was the #2 option, but the other guys were not forgotten. Clutch shots by Fisher, Horry and Brian Shaw, the play of Rick Fox, Glen Rice as the legit 3rd option for the 2000 Lakers, Tyronn Lue's defense on Allen Iverson, Mark Maddog Madsen's persona (hell, they always ran the "who let the dogs out" song everytime he entered the game from the bench).

Of the 2008 Celtics, not only was it the Big 3, but it was Posey's clutch shots and defense on Bryant, the plays of wily veterans PJ Brown and Sam Cassell, Leon Powe in game 2, the rising star in Rajon Rondo etc.

For the 2009 Lakers, it was of course about Kobe Bryant and his 1st ring w/o Shaq, but it was also bout Mr. Clutch Derek Fisher in game 4, Trevor Ariza is bedazzling in the playoffs, Pau Gasol goin up against Dwight Howard where as the series went on he was losing that "soft" label etc.

If Cavs were to win this yr, it would be about Lebron Lebron Lebron (with Shaq as a tiny tiny footnote of him retiring with 5 titles). It would be "Lebron has surpassed Kobe", "LeBron is trying to catch MJ", "Is Lebron leaving now that he's given the city a title", "Oh, Lebron won with a sore elbow" etc. etc. etc. It's not gonna be about Antawn Jamison and the mid-yr trade the Cavs made, or Shaq's acquisition during the summer, or Mo Williams or Varejao or Parker or Moon. It will be 99.9% about LeBron!

10-15 yrs from now, people will recall role players like Kerr, Rodman, Paxson, Fisher (twice), Horry, Fox, Shaw, Rondo, Cassell, PJ Brown, Posey, Gasol, Odom etc. But nobody gonna really attribute a Cavs title to Mo Williams, Anthony Parker, Jamario Moon, Varejao. They'll just thing about LeBron.

If they do their fair share then they'll get what they deserve. It was Mo, West, AP and Varejao that kept them in the game last night when the Celtics threatened to pull away three times. It was LeBron and Shaq who closed it out.

For the most part, if they do win it, it will be about LeBron getting his first ring because the ring isn't as meaningful to the other players because they aren't at his status. Frankly, there's no more compelling story line to talk about when it comes to the Cavs. If you were scripting the commentary for ESPN, what would your main feature be? What would be second, third and fourth story lines?

I disagree. People fail to realize when the Bulls won there first title that Pippen wasn't even an allstar. He became a great player from the moment forward and everyone thinks of him as an elite player now because of what happened after we won our first title.

Also the fact remains is that Lebron would have needed a player on his team that got it done before as the Man multiple times in Shaq.

The foul call on Jamison when Perkins jumped in for a board was a horrendous call -- much worse than anything listed above.

Anyway, the point is: every team can pick out bad calls. This game was not that poorly reffed outside the Jamison call and the Rondo charge and maybe 1-2 more.

. Lebron played the entire 2nd half, as he usually has to for the Cavs to win.

This thinking is why Boston lost. They were so worried about Lebron and forgot about The other good players Cleveland got. Mo with a huge 3rd, Shaq clutch on both ends in the 4th, West hot in the 2nd, JJ energy off the bench.

This team is clearly not Just Lebron anymore.

Jamsion needs to play better.
