View Full Version : Samardzija to pitch in Iowa’s pen

The Cubs sent Jeff Samardzija to Iowa this evening when they activated Ted Lilly to pitch against the Brewers tonight at 6:10. The earlier game time is a good thing with slow-working junkballer Doug Davis going for Milwaukee.

One thing the Cubs won’t do with Samardzija is put him in Iowa’s starting rotation. They’ll keep him in the pen. In the past, the Cubs have had Samardzija start in the minor leagues only to recall him to relieve at the big-league level. His numbers in 4 games for the Cubs were 0-1 with an 18.90 ERA and a 3.30 WHIP.

“We’ve got a lot of starting pitching here,” Lou said. “For him to get back quickly, out of the bullpen probably would be the easiest way.”

What does he have to do?

“Work on making better pitches, that’s all,” Lou said. “His command needs to improve. That’s probably the biggest (thing). Go down there and pitch out of the bullpen in the late innings to get him more prepared for this here.”http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/3920

Its about time. They ruined his development by keeping him in limbo.

I'm kind of surprised we aren't letting him start in the minors.. that way, we could call him up.. put him in the rotation, and put Ted Lilly in the bullpen.

Only kidding.

This is OT, but I did the math on the rotation's numbers:

SO: 95
BB: 32
H: 89
SO/BB: 2.97
WHIP: 1.15
HR: 4

RA: 34
IP: 105.1
ERA: 2.91

Our Staff has been top-notch this whole season. Props to that
*includes all of Lilly's, Dempsters, Silva's, Wells, Gorzelanny's, and
**all of Zambrano's starts except his first on Opening Day

What?!? The Cubs I know would never bounce a player back and forth from AAA to the majors...you bite your tongue.

put him in the outfield and let him run down the balls, show off those nasty receiver skills

He'd probably be under Marshall in the outfield depth chart. At least he has a better arm than Nady :)

Anyways, just going by necessity, we need bull pen arms and not starters. It kind of make sense, but it still sucks in how badly he/Cubs failed him.

Can they just decide what they want to do with this kid ? This month he is SP nex month he is RP. Jesus wouldn't surprise me to see them trying him at 2B next month.

If I was him, I would give the NFL a shot. I am a huge Notre Dame fan and I really liked the idea when the Cubs drafted him, but the contract and signing bonus put too much pressure on both him and the organization for him to perform right away. He needed much more time.

He would have to pay back his bonus and some salary I think.

Plain and simple, a really bad contract that Hendry is directly responsible for giving. The guy had two pitches in college and nothing resembling elite stuff.
