Cincinnati Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez has failed a test for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended for 50 games, SI.com has learned.

An announcement is expected shortly. It is believed he failed the test during spring training.

Volquez went 4-2 with a 4.35 ERA for the Reds in 2009. He was an NL All-Star in 2008 but has not pitched yet this season.

Interesting. Isnt he out til like August anyhow?

So does this put him out the rest of the year or just during his DL stint?

I would hope the suspension starts after the DL stint, but good question.

I would have to think it would be retroactive to his activation from the 60 day DL, whenever that is.

Suspension starts immediatly, while he's on the DL

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5119303

So basically he's not going to miss anytime because of this.

Thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard. So everyone should take steroids when they are recovering from a major injury.

If you are out for more than 50 games.... yes.

Yeah, starts Wednesday.

Good thing for my fantasy team, but kind of a loophole for the league.

And only once, since another positive is 100 games.

Not that big of a deal since he was out till June. I wonder if he only used them after his injury or hes been on them for some time.

Also good to know that MLB tests are actually working.

I'd like to see a lifetime ban for a positive test. MLB should come out with a list of what you can take(I believe there already is) and if you take something that's off the list, then you're putting your career on the line. That's my honest opinion.

I agree, although I don't agree with everything that is banned (for example, I believe that controlled use of HGH to recover from injuries under the supervision of a doctor could be very beneficial in certain cases). But that is a completely different argument.
