not sure there is any interest in this type of thread, but i was wondering what the next NBA CBA was going to look like. hard cap or soft cap?

if they decide on a soft cap, what kind of exceptions? i figure the MLE is history. the BAE maybe. maybe higher level than it is now. something between the MLE and the vet's minimum. the larry bird exception will stay, imo.

if they decide on a hard cap, what to do about teams that are now over the cap? will they have to pay off the excess players similar to the alan houston's the last CBA? what will that do to teams like the lakers? with a hard cap, how can they afford kobe, pau, bynum et al? if a team has a minimum number of players, what do they do? if all the teams have to buy out the excess players, teams with cap room will have a real chance to pick up good players for cheap. teams that sign guys this summer for big bucks could be stuck with 1 or 2 stars and the rest vet's min players.

just thoughts. this will make a real difference in the ability of teams to compete.

They gotta do something. A hard cap might be the way to go. Just grandfather in the contracts they have now. Teams get stuck in cap hell and can't get out. Also allow teams to buy out a contract and not have the money count against the cap. The best thing would be to get rid of guaranteed contracts.

a hard cap with grandfathered contracts makes sense. but wouldn't it give the teams like the lakers and cleveland an unfair advantage. they have expensive skilled players that other teams won't be able to sign because of the cap. don't see the other teams in the league going for that.
