Monday, April 19 Citi Field | 6:10 PM CT

Randy Wells, RHP (1-0, 2.92)
Cubs (5-7) @ Jon Niese, LHP (0-1, 6.55)
Mets (4-8)

Cubs: Wells did not get a decision in his last start against the Brewers. In that game, he gave up four runs on 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings while striking out seven. The one mulligan Wells would like to have is a walk he issued to pitcher Dave Bush in the fifth. Bush scored that inning on Rickie Weeks' two-run double, which gave the Brewers the lead. He last faced the Mets on Sept. 6 in New York, and took the loss, despite giving up one earned run on seven hits over six innings.
Mets: Though some defensive blunders undermined Niese last Wednesday in Denver, nothing hurt more than Ryan Spilborgh's three-run homer to the deepest part of Coors Field. Niese allowed nine hits and one walk in total, striking out two. But the Mets could not do nearly enough offensively to turn those numbers into a win. Niese will now open the Mets homestand against the Cubs, the team that handed him the first loss of his Major League career in 2008.

Tuesday, April 20 Citi Field | 6:10 PM CT

Carlos Zambrano, RHP (1-1, 9.45)
Cubs (5-7) @ Mike Pelfrey, RHP (2-0, 1.29)
Mets (4-8)

Cubs: Zambrano had to leave his last start because of cramps in his right hand and right calf, and also because he threw 121 pitches over five innings. The Brewers were aggressive and fouled a lot of pitches off, which was part of the reason for the high pitch count. Big Z hasn't thrown that many pitches since he totaled 125 on July 24, 2008. That year, he topped 100 pitches in 18 of his starts, including a 130-pitch game May 28 against the Dodgers. He was 0-1 in two starts against the Mets last season.
Mets: Featuring a sharp split-fingered fastball, along with good control of his slider and curve, Mike Pelfrey blanked a potent Rockies offense for seven innings on Thursday in Denver. Continuing to grow more confident in his secondary pitches, Pelfrey is no longer relying solely on his power sinker to generate outs. That much should serve him well against the Cubs, who mustered only one run in eight innings in their lone meeting with Pelfrey last season.

http://blog.nj.com/ledgerupdates/2007/07/large_metsL.jpg

Wednesday, April 21 Citi Field | 6:10 PM CT

Carlos Silva, RHP (1-0, 0.69)
Cubs (5-7) @ Oliver Perez, LHP (0-1, 3.75)
Mets (4-8)

Cubs: Silva is coming off his second straight stellar start to kick off the season, having allowed five hits while striking out five and walking none in seven solid innings during a 7-2 win over the Astros in his first Cubs start at Wrigley Field. Silva last pitched against the Mets on June 18, 2007, when he gave up 10 hits and four runs in six innings in a losing effort as a member of the Twins.
Mets: Uncharacteristically throwing his offspeed pitches for strikes, Perez flashed a sharp slider and some stellar control on Friday in St. Louis. That not only helped him negate his dip in fastball velocity, but also allowed him to submit one of his finest efforts of the past two seasons. Whether Perez can sustain his low-velocity success remains to be seen. But if he can continue to feature the type of control he had against the Cardinals, Perez should, at the very least, be serviceable. His next test will come against the Dodgers, who walked seven times but could not beat him last July at Citi Field.

http://theproductguy.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/unkownperson.gif

Thursday, April 22 Citi Field | 6:10 PM CT

Tom Gorzelanny, LHP (0-1, 1.93)
Cubs (5-7) @ To be announced
Mets (4-8)

Cubs: Gorzelanny took the loss in his second start of the season, against the Astros on Saturday. The left-hander gave up two runs on three hits in three innings, but he left the game for precautionary reasons after getting hit by line drive on his throwing shoulder. Gorzelanny last stared against the Mets on April 30, 2008, and got the win, pitching five shutout, one-hit innings for the Pirates. It may be Gorzelanny's final chance to prove he deserves to stay in the starting rotation with Ted Lilly scheduled to come off the 15-day disabled list and rejoin the starting staff.

On the plus side, we are playing the Mets, who are off to just as rough a start as us...

on the down side, we are the Cubs (and Pinella has made his first knee jerk reaction lineup change...)

I find it pretty lame that he skips out on the Mets series cause of something that happened back in 1969. That would be like Moises Alou not going to Florida.

Davis isn't going to be taht good that they should worry so much about him being expensive. He's more of a solid regular with an all star game or two in him than a start. Mejia on the other hand yeah what they're doing with him is comical.

Why did you have to ban him so quick... I think it would have been fun to light him up for a bit. I agree that everyone is entitled to their views and beliefs (mine are Christian, I know there are several on the board who aren't), but to shove it in someones face is beyond not cool. :D

Ike Davis is the Mets' future 1B. Murphy is hurt (they don't know when he'll return), Jacobs was DFA'd (thank God), Tatis is a bench player and Cora is a bench player. They might as well call him up. Plus, from what I've read he still won't serve enough time on the ML roster this year and will be under team control for an extra year.

And I agree, he isn't "the answer" the Mets need. The answer they need is for Wright and Bay to be a bit more productive at the plate along with Francoeur and Ike. If those guys all get going and Reyes can get back into the swing of things I think we have a shot at being fairly decent. Aside from Maine the rotation hasn't been that bad.

Either way, good luck, guys.

Yea, the Red Sox should offer Mets and Cubs fans everywhere some consolation, as they currently are the biggest spender with the worst record. However, they've played an incredibly difficult stretch of games so far and will probably end up with more wins than either the Cubs or the Mets, but for now I'm enjoying their failures since it takes the spotlight off the Cubs.

Oh yeah, I have no doubts that the Red Sox will turn it around and become contenders as always, but as you said, it helps soften the blow.

I didn't doubt that the Phillies would get off to a hot start, but their schedule certainly helped. Their first 9 games (3 series) were against the Nationals (at home and away) and the Astros.

Hey, at the end of the day we can at least say that we didn't blow it in each of the last 3 seasons. We just blew it in one. And even then, we didn't really blow it, since the Cardinals were leading almost the whole year.

The Mets have choked down the stretch the last 3 years, which is probably a lot harder to take.

the prices for seats at citi field are ridiculous. they said they were going to reduce ticket prices and they barely did. look at the product they've put on the field for the past 3 years. look at the mess that was the 2009 mets. front office promised that the team would have "one of the highest payrolls in the league" and they cut 20 million off their payroll. they continue to go with the same rotation (add niese) that has failed the past 3 years. with the exception of bay they didn't do anything in the offseason to address their needs. omar minaya said he'd go after pitching, speed, and defense. they addressed none of those three.
