View Full Version : Indiana Pacers may be moving to a new city

asandhu23

The Indiana Pacers would consider all options -- including moving the NBA franchise to a new city -- if the city doesn't agree to cover the cost to run Conseco Fieldhouse.

Since the 18,345-seat venue opened 11 years ago, the Pacers' lease with the city has required the organization to pay for the building's general operating costs, estimated at $15 million per year.

But since March 2009, owner Herb Simon and the Pacers' top brass have insisted the economics of operating a small-market NBA franchise make it fiscally impossible to also pay to keep the arena running.

The Pacers signed their current 20-year lease with the city in 1999, but a clause in that contract allows the team to renegotiate its terms with the city's Capital Improvement Board after 10 years.

The Pacers, members of the CIB and Mayor Greg Ballard's administration have held behind-closed-doors negotiations on that lease, which have centered on the team's push to have the CIB pick up the $15 million operating tab.

Those negotiations now, however, have reached a critical stage.

On Tuesday, Pacers Sports & Entertainment President Jim Morris said if a deal isn't inked by June 30, Simon would have to start searching for other solutions, and nothing would be off the table.

"We've been having conversations with the Ballard administration for two years," Morris said, "and we're now at the point where we need to wrap this up in the next 30, 40 days."

If that doesn't happen, he said, "Herb would have to look at all of his options."

Including moving the team?

"Herb would look at all of his options," Morris repeated.

Then, he quickly stressed, that the Pacers and city leaders are working hard to make sure that doesn't happen.

"We have not had conversations with other cities. We do not want the team to move," Morris said. "In the event that we're not able to address the issues, you have to look at all your options, but Herb has never threatened to move the team, and it's not a matter of leverage; it's a matter of trying to find a way to make this work."
June 30 is Pacers' deadline

Any predictions if deal isn't made?

But KC would be kinda cool. They'd have 3 major sports teams.

Let them stay where they are and move the damn Clippers to Seattle please as they are a disgrace to Staples.

The Pacers need a star and excuse me for not being PC here, just a team based on the great white hopes.

They tried so hard to change the image after Jackson, Artest, and Tinsley with a more wholesome looking group in Dunleavy and Murphy that the made their squad suck and fans lose interest.

Even some aging stars of yesteryear like Iverson and McGrady may be able to save their fan base

Let us give the Clippers a chance after this season! I do agree moving the Clippers though, but maybe after another year or two. Clips just doesn't have an identity because Staples clearly belongs to the Lakers. Building another Arena, i.e Clippers Arena in contrast to the "Staples" Center. hehehe. Office Depot must change their name to Clippers so they can build an arena solely for the Clippers so both team and company can compete to Staples.

Yeah, I don't think Iverson or McGrady is what that city needs. Two washed up fading stars who haven't been relevant for two years to save the franchise? Whooo!! You do realize that most of their team is black, including their star Danny Granger, right? Plus Troy Murphy's a solid player, every franchise would love to have him. And this team has been to the playoffs in 7 of the last 10 years, I'm not exactly weeping for them. Took them some time to get away from the waves of that brawl, but they're probably only a solid draft pick and savvy free agency move away from being relevant in the eastern conference.

give Hawaii a team!

If not for the 11 hour+ flight time from Hawaii to the east coast, that sounds fun.

Omaha, Nebraska! People go to Creighton games...I'm sure that projects to the NBA right? Yeah, we couldn't support a team. I'd be down for Kansas City though. Maybe we can recreate the Kansas City-Omaha Kings of the 70's. I think the KC-Omaha Pacers sounds pretty good. Haha.

The Pacers needed to tank this year and try to get Wall; it would have been huge for the marketability of that team.

To make it happen, it will be during a west coast swing. 5-6 hours away from LA so it's not that bad then they can have a break of 2-3 days.

It wouldn't work. Imagine all of the planning for their away trips to the east coast, etc. They'd have to be on the road for weeks at a time just to make it work.

I recently played NCAA in Hawaii and our road trips were ridiculous. We had two to three a year to the mainland where we were gone for a minimum of 2 weeks [yeah, my professors loved that...], and that was just to our conference on the west coast. I can't imagine an NBA ball schedule of 82 games where 1/4th of the games would be in the midwest/eastcoast. Would be horrible.

Actually I think Vancouver could be a realistic possibility down the road again. I don't think it would be No. 1 on the list, but as a business, I could see it working. Sorry if you prefer no more Canadian teams, but I don't think businessmen are going to care what a fan in Charlotte thinks about it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the Thunder owns the name of the Sonics and the rights to all "Seattle Supersonics" history, so even if a team moves to Seattle (which I'm sure would be the case if this deal were to fall through) they would NOT end up being the "Supersonics."

But yes, the Pacific Northwest needs another sports franchise, bring 'em in!!
