View Full Version : Does everyone still think the Thunder are THAT good?

All I've heard about the entire second half of the Season is how amazing the Thunder are, how much their destroying, how they have the greatest young team with the greatest young player ever etc etc...

Well, now their locked in the 8th seed with the Lakers after blowing a huge lead to the Warriors and losing to the Blazers w/o Roy...

Is it time to put their season in perspective? I mean, this year the Blazers lost both Oden and Przybilla for the year, and have lost Roy and many other players for extended periods of the season and have managed to beat the Thunder in their season series, finish higher seeded than them in the playoffs, and win 50 games...

thoughts?

The Thunder weren't even supposed to make the playoffs. Durant was supposed to become hopefully a top 15 player in the league. Westbrook was just supposed to become a smarter PG and try to learn the position better. Ibaka was supposed to play close to no minutes and possibly be in the D-League. They were supposed to be a bad defensive team with a no name coach. I could go on and on...

The positives outweigh the negatives so much it's not worth going on.

Anyone that makes the playoffs in the competitive West should be considered THAT good

Then you must be in the small minority if you predicted them to be a playoff team. Most people predicted the Thunder to be an "ok" team at best and show improvement.

Most people were picking the Thunder as a fringe playoff team, 7-10 out West. I think they've slightly exceeded expectations only because of the great defensive improvement as a team.

I never thought they were that good... They're good, but like I said before, they're still a big man away from being elite.

Nobody thought we'd be in the playoffs before the season started. And nobody expected Durant to be as good as he's been. But the team chemistry is there now. Everybody has progressed at least a little bit. With a group of guys like Durant, Green, Westbrook, Harden.....and specialists like Sefolosha and Ibaka, this team can play with anybody about as well as you can for not having added a real big man yet. This is a team full of kids that are becoming very dangerous. There's alot of talent, and alot of speed. But the youth factor has gotten us becuz at times this year, we've gotten too lazy, too cocky, and too overconfident....it's happened quite a bit in these last couple of weeks. It's like we show what we're capable of one night and the whole world says "damn, I don't want any part of that team", and then the next night they see us play and they say "wow, I hope we catch those guys soon". We're hot and cold, one week we're focused, and the next week we're not. I guess youth and inexperience really does play a part.

The only thing that helped some of these other teams finish ahead of us was experience. Say what you want about Portland and their injuries, they still have a ton more experience than our team and they've got talent, and the Spurs are probably the most veteran team in the league that are still capable of playing at a high level. For OKC to stay with them until the very end and only finish like 1 game behind them is more impressive than we realize, we just didn't wanna get stuck with the title of "8th seed". It was never about fearing the Lakers, with some other teams, I think it was. But with us, I think we just wanted to say "hey, we didn't finish last in the playoff race", but we fell just short, we had a chance to control our own destiny, but we had a couple more mental lapses. That's life.

Look at all eight of the playoff teams in the West and try to figure out which one doesn't look like they belong based on age and experience. It's easily Oklahoma City, but we're there and pretty much on par with everybody. Take out a couple of weeks worth of immature, overconfident play and who knows how high we might have finished. If we take down Memphis on Wednesday night (we sure as heck better), then we'll finish with 50 wins. That would mean all eight playoff teams in the West would have at least 50 wins. We'd have a record of 50-32 and be in the 8th seed??????????? That's how tough the West is, but for us to be where we are this early in the building process means everybody better watch out becuz it's just a matter of time before we're right up at the top. This team is gonna be around for a very long time.

Go get em boys.....let's give LA all they want:box:......(I hope)

Umm i live in Memphis and i am one of the biggest Grizz fan but NOBODY and i mean NOBODY expected us to make the playoffs or even come close. Especially after starting 1 - 9. Everyone was hoping to become respectable with about 35 wins. And that was really a pipe dream

And nobody had the Thunder in the playoffs before the year started. Everyone said the same thing. That they were 1 year away.

10 "EXPERTS" and nobody had the Thunder or Grizz finishing higher than 11th in the west. So who are these "most People" your taking about?

That's just not true. I picked the Thunder as the 8th seen on October 29th and I remember many others doing the same.

The Thunder were a 20+ win team last year. They really have improved a lot.

Actually, they are only a few games behind the #2 seed.

Exactly, 1-8 in the West is closer than 1-3 in the East. So don't write them off just cause they're 8th. They'll probably win 50 games, they're a very good team already, and because of they're age, that's exciting.

But I don't agree with people saying "Durant was hopefully gonna be a top 15 player" or anything like that. The guy put up over 25 points per game as a 20 year old, he broke out last year. If you didn't think he was gonna be the man this year then you're an idiot.

Durant's defense was awful last year, he wasn't a top 15 player. This year, he's learned a lot and has made an incredible jump on defense end in addition to his increased efficiency. He's, without question, my pick for Most Improved.

i still think they are good, i would compare them to the goldenstate team that raped the mavs a few years ago except they are less experienced. they are a dangerous team, but they are weak and they will have tons of turnovers and other mistakes.

That was one random Spurs homer/complete dunce who picked the Thunder.

The point he was making (which he proved with the playoff prediction link on ESPN) was that virtually no professional basketball analyst believed the Thunder were going to be in the playoff hunt, let alone a 50 win team who finished just a few games off the 2 seed.

Nobody thought their defense would improve this drastically, and I don't think many people realized that Durant was going to jump to top-3 player in the league talks this soon. Not to mention that Westbrook was going to be such an impactful player at this point.

Bottom line, yes, I still think they're a very good team. A few tough games doesn't change a season, as quickly as people like to forget in the world of the NBA. If the Thunder take the first game against LA in the playoffs, some kid is going to make the thread of, "did anyone think the Thunder were going to be THIS good?". Can count on that.

The Thunder have 49 wins and could still finish tied with the 6th seed recordwise.
They are slumping lately but it's not like they're getting their butts kicked.

haha the guy who wrote the first one said:

*I am sick of the Jazz. They suck. Jerry Sloan sucks. People have to stop saying they are contenders because they play a little bit of defense. The bottom line is the Jazz sucks. They will not make the playoffs this year.

I was a believer until they started playing playoff teams in playoff mode. Then I decided they are still a year out. Let them get beat down in the playoffs, then next year they will build off of that and at least get into the second round.
