BoSox lock up Beckett through 2014 for $68M

Red Sox signed RHP Josh Beckett to a four-year, $68 million extension.
The new deal, to be announced Monday afternoon at a press conference, will pay Beckett a $5 million signing bonus and annual salaries of $15.75 million from 2011-2014. The 29-year-old righty has gone 65-34 with a 4.08 ERA since joining the Red Sox back in 2006, strong numbers in baseball's toughest division. He's among the top group of mixed league fantasy starters this year and should remain an attractive option for a long while.
Lincecum blanks Astros over seven innings

Tim Lincecum hurled seven shutout innings in a 5-2 win over the Astros on Monday night.
His so-so spring training is already an afterthought. Lincecum held a pretty weak Astros lineup to four measly singles while striking out seven and walking none. They threatened in the sixth, but Lincecum was able to get Carlos Lee to fly out with runners on second and third. It was Lincecum's first career Opening Day victory -- he gave up three runs in three innings in last year's season opener against the Brewers.
Kazmir 'very surprised' to start season on DL

Scott Kazmir (shoulder) said he was "very surprised" when he learned he would open the season on the disabled list.
"I felt like I was ready [to face the A's]," said Kazmir. "At the same time, I didn't get that many [Cactus League] innings. I have a little more time to work on things." Kazmir, who was scratched from one Cactus League start due to a tight shoulder, will pitch for high Class A Rancho Cucamonga on Friday night. Because he was placed on the DL retroactive to March 31, his first start would likely come against the Yankees on April 15.
Reyes swipes two bases in rehab game

Jose Reyes (thyroid) was 1-for-3 with a single, a run scored and two steals in an extended spring training game on Monday night.
He's off and running. Reyes took a day off on Sunday, but he's quickly ramping up his rehab for a tentative return from the disabled list on Saturday -- the first day he's eligible to return.
Lee (abdominal) plays catch on Monday

Cliff Lee (abdominal) played catch for a second straight day on Monday.
"It's behind me," Lee said of his abdominal strain injury. "I've just got to build up." He's scheduled to throw off flat ground on Tuesday, then throw a bullpen session on Friday in Texas after taking two days off. He'll have to complete multiple bullpen sessions before making a rehab start in the minors. He likely came with a high price tag on draft day, but don't count on him until the end of the month at the earliest.
Heyward homers, drives in four in MLB debut

Jason Heyward slugged a three-run home run in his first major league at-bat against the Cubs on Monday.
With all the hype surrounding him this spring, it seems rather fitting. He crushed a no-doubter -- estimated at 442 feet -- as part of a six-run first inning off Carlos Zambrano. The 20-year-old phenom finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Expectations for this season should be kept in check given the history of players at a similar age, but he has the sort of maturity and plate discipline to suggest that he could be the exception to that rule.
Street (shoulder) visits Dr. James Andrews

Huston Street (shoulder) received good news during a consult with Dr. James Andrews on Monday.
"Everything looked great. I was told they didn't see any issues at all, so we are going to keep doing the same thing with him," said Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd on Monday. "He wanted a second opinion and everything came back really good." Even with the good news, there's still no set timetable for his return from the disabled list. He'll continue to strengthen the shoulder, playing catch and throwing bullpen sessions. On a related note, Franklin Morales successfully handled his first save opportunity against the Brewers on Monday
Pujols homers twice to power Cards past Reds

Albert Pujols went 4-for-5 with two homers and four runs scored as the Cardinals topped the Reds 11-6 on Monday.
Just another day at the ballpark for Albert. He took Aaron Harang deep on just his second swing of the season, and he later added a liner just over the wall in right for a two-run shot off Mike Lincoln. While he's facing stiff competition from Placido Polanco and Garrett Jones, he already looks like the NL MVP to us.
Halladay fans nine, gets win in Phils debut

Roy Halladay overmatched the Nationals in his Phillies debut, yielding one run in seven innings and striking out nine to win Monday.
The run scored in the first, as Ryan Zimmerman doubled in Nyjer Morgan. Halladay was pretty much untouchable the rest of the way, though. It will be interesting to see if he can keep up the strikeout pace. His strikeout rate took a big jump in 2008 and increased again last year. Now that he gets to face pitchers, rather than DHs, it could improve further
Pedro to begin throwing program this week

Pedro Martinez plans to begin a throwing program this week with the intention of signing a free agent deal around the middle of the season.
"I’m in good shape, real good – it doesn’t take me that long to get ready,’’ Martinez told the Boston media after throwing out the first pitch at Sunday's Red Sox season opener. He's been linked to the Phillies and could sign a contract similar to last year's prorated $2 million deal.

The Giants just beat the Astros again and Zito had a very solid effort.

6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 5 K's (I believe). Good job
