Dallas- i think they have it secured even though the standings dont say so.
Utah-will beat Denver out because they are playing much better
Phoenix- a flop between Denver here. I think Denver will play Phoenix in the playoffs
Denver- inconsistent and playing their worst basketball as of late

wow. noone ever talks about the suns when they discuss teams out in the west. its always dallas denver utah when its a discussion about 2nd seed. i guess thats just the way it is. well always be underappreciated. in the begining of the year everyone said we were gunna miss the playoffs, and in now noone even considers us serious even tho we have the exact same record as the nuggets, jazz, AND mavericks.

i think were really gunna surprise some people. we have an amazing bench this year and can put a good defense lineup out there when need be.

lol more people talk about the Suns than the Jazz, I bet half the people in this forum dont even know the Jazz exist. Go take your violin elsewhere.

First of all there is no way in hell the Suns are gonna finish as 2 or 3, they have to be a division leader. Second off look at their remaining schedule:

vs Spurs
@ Thunder
vs Rockets
vs Nuggets
@ Jazz

Good luck with that.

You're all forgetting about the other 3 teams. 3 games separate the 2 from 8 seeds, so I'd imagine that between the Thunder, Blazers and San Antonio (Thunder are only 1.5 back from the 2 seed) one of them will break into the top 5.

The highest they can be is a 4th seed regardless of their record.

By the way, Dallas and Utah have the tie breaker over the Suns.

The Suns could probably beat any team except LA, and I think a lot of ppl are sleeping on Phoenix.

PHX could be a 2nd or 3rd if their record permitted it.

The top 4 seeds are reserved for division winners and ordered by best records. The NBA changed the rule from the old way so it is possible in theory for LA and PHX to be 1 and 2 followed by the winners from the other 2 divisions, just like it is possible for the 5th seed to have home court over the 4th seed if they are a division champ.

Phoenix is going to make no noise in the playoffs. At best they make it to the second round.

They never do anything in the playoffs.

Phoenix is in the same division as LA, there are 3 other divisions. So you're saying LA and Phoenix can be 1 and 2 and there could be a division leader as a 5th seed?

Mavrix
04-04-2010, 10:29 PM
Also Denver and Utah are in the same division, so it's either gonna be Denver, Utah, or Phoenix as the 5th seed. There can't be two 2nd place division teams as top 4.

jimbobjarree
04-04-2010, 10:49 PM
yeah but the Mavs can still be 4th and not have homecourt...which is basically 5th

braveniler58
04-04-2010, 10:55 PM
The top four seeds are reserved for the three division winners and the best record after that. They're ordered best-record first, worst 4th. In case of ties, the division winner automatically is seeded higher.

So, if the Suns finish with a better record than the Mavs, Jazz, and Nuggets, they're 2nd. If they're tied with Mavs and/or the NW division winner, they'll be below them.

It's still possible for the Suns to get 2nd.

No.

The first four seeds are guaranteed to be the 3 division winners and another team.

It could be

- LA
- PHX
- Dallas
- Utah

The league changed the rules to the top 4 seeds are the 3division champs and 1 other team but that the top 4 would also be sorted by record years ago.

Also, the 5th seed could have HCA over the 4th if their record is better but the 4th seed is a division record.

They changed it when they reorganized the divisions.

Prime example would be 07-08 with the Spurs and Hornets at 2-3 despite being in the same division and Utah as the division champs at 4 and lacking HCA to the Rockets @ 5 - http://espn.go.com/nba/standings/_/year/2008

TIEBREAKER BASIS:
(-) Tie breaker not needed (better overall winning percentage)
(1) Division leader wins tie from team not leading a division
(2) Head-to-head won-lost percentage
(3) Division won-lost percentage
(4) Conference won-lost percentage
(5) W-L Percentage vs. Playoff teams, own conference
(6) W-L Percentage vs. Playoff teams, other conference
(7) Net Points, all games

(1) (a) Since the three division winners are guaranteed a spot in the top four, ties to determine the division winners must be broken before any other ties.

http://www.nba.com/standings/team_record_comparison/conferenceNew_Std_Cnf.html

So basically, the top 4 seeds are based solely on record. Although if you are a division leader, you are guarenteed a top 4 seed.
