On Monday, LeBron James filmed a Nike commercial ticketed for NBA playoff telecasts at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron. It was just the latest in a series of spots dating back seven years, reflecting James' now long-standing relationship with the shoe giant.
There will be many, many more.

James' seven-year contract with Nike was set to expire in a couple of months, but a new long-term deal has been reached that will keep Nike and James together for at least the next seven years. That means tens of millions for James -- but it also may mean some peace of mind for concerned Cavaliers fans about Nike's role in James' upcoming free agency decision.

"LeBron James is one of the world's best basketball players and global sports icon that has transcended generations and cultures," Nike said in a statement confirming the deal. "Nike's relationship with LeBron has created innovative basketball products and captivating campaigns. We're proud to continue our partnership with him for years to come."
Financial terms were not disclosed.

However, according to multiple sources, the new deal does not have any bonuses for James to play in a larger market such as New York, Chicago or Los Angeles. There has been some speculation that such clauses in endorsement deals may have been something for James to consider when he becomes a free agent in July.

Instead, James will continue to focus on winning, which is helping shoe sales. The current version of James' signature shoe, the Zoom LeBron VI, has been the best-selling version of the shoe. Two Final Four teams, Butler and Michigan State, will be wearing LeBron styles at the Final Four.
The increase in popularity can be attributed to James winning the Most Valuable Player Award and the Cavs' success over the last two seasons. It is giving momentum for Nike to roll out more James products and likely with a new logo after he completes his number change next season.

"We have a great relationship with Nike and LeBron's relationship with (Nike Senior Director of Basketball) Lynn Merritt is irreplaceable," said Maverick Carter, the CEO of James' Cleveland-based LRMR Marketing and Branding, which put the Nike deal together.
In the last year, Carter has also extended James' relationship with Coca-Cola and signed James to an endorsement deal with McDonald's.

"The way the deal works is a testament to how much work has gone into LeBron's brand," said Carter, who had talks with Nike over 18 months about the new contract. "The team LeBron has there means the world to us."
Nike has developed a team for James at its Beaverton, Ore., headquarters that includes lead shoe designer Jason Petrie, head apparel designer Lee Walters and brand managers John Hess and Omar Johnson, brand marketing.

How does this^^^^make any sense????

Nike wants him in NY b/c ITS NEW YORK CITY!!!!!!!!!!!!

They aren't going to laden his contract with incentives, but what company wouldn't want him in the biggest money market in the universe???????

They aren't gonna come out and say it, but if you have even the smallest of a business mind, then you know its a good thing when your product pitchman has his face all over the NYC (more than it already is).

It sounds like this thread is heading towards becoming a breeding ground for "Anti-Lebron in NY" talk...like its some ridiculous thought and some pipe dream fro us Knick Fans lol.

I'm not reading that much into this report, I'd advise Cavs fans and Knick hater to do the same.

The location bonuses aren't in there because that's against league policy and [I think] even illegal.

There were no location bonuses in the last contract and there are none in this one. The whole thing was just a dumb rumor.

Not to sure about the league policy thing being true but it does make sense.

It is against league policy. Outside sources cannot tamper with FA decisions, let alone supplement salaries.

Remember when the TWolves got caught paying Joe Smith under the table? If bonuses like this were possible, why wouldn't the owner just hire Smith on as an employee to his company and pay him there? Why wouldn't the TWolves just get a Twin Cities business to pony up the extra cash and reimburse them or cut a deal?

It's against league policy.
