View Full Version : Favourite College/HS Player Who Never Quite Panned out in the NBA

With March Madness in full swing I thought this would be an interesting thred idea.

Who was your favourite player while he was in college or high school for that matter that just didnít live up to all his expectations as an NBA player?

Mine would have to be Shelden Williams. While he was at Duke I thought he had all the tools to make it as an effective big Man in the League. I really didnít see him being a perennial All-Star but certainly a guy who could have averaged around 17 ppg, 9-11 rpg, 2 bpg. But that never quite happened and now heís an end of the bench or role player at best. The highlight of his career is the fact that he married Candace Parker:up:.

Shaun Livingston. He grew up and played not to far away from where I do, so it's nice to see someone make it to the NBA even if it was short lived. And it's really nice to be see'ing him make a comeback lately.

I know this is different...

RONALD CURRY

Curry was national Player of the Year in Football, He actualy played in the same High School Football Conference as Michael Vick and EVERYONE thought Curry was better, and his team PLAYED MUCH BETTER THEN VICK'S... and he was Basketball All American. even won the McDonalds all american game MVP AND Slam Dunk championship... He was HIGHLY Recruited and touted as a guy that could do anything...

He was a REAL STUD ATHELETE... and then to watch him become an OK college Quarterback, and a decent College Point guard... He never improved, and actually stopped playing basketball before his senior year at UNC.

He has had MINOR success as a reciever in the NFL, but its a FAR cry from all that was predited from a 2 sport Super Star!

Big disappointment as a Virginia native.

Gerald Green. Came to my high school during one of his AAU tournaments (Eisenhower High) in Houston and the gym was full. I managed the clock. He scored about 60 in the championship with about 15 dunks or something like that and they won. We even talked after the game for a while. Dude was cool, wish he couldve found a home with the Rockets.

....didnt go to Oklahoma State like he shouldve. Wouldve been great.

Marvin O'Connor- St. Joe's: Seen a lot of him on the philly sports channel and had a great game in the second round of the tourney against #1 seeded Stanford his Sr. year.

John Gilchrist- Maryland: Led my favorite college team to an improbable ACC championship. Decided to leave for the draft even though everyone said he would at best be a second round pick. Wasnít drafted and has bounced around teams all over the world.

Dajuan Wagner- Memphis: Seen a lot of him on the philly sports channel. Wanted the Sixers to get him........Glad they didnít.

Salim Stoudamire- Arizona: Amazing 3 pt shooter in college. Would have had my entire Final Four right that year and won uber amounts of money if Zona would have beaten Illinois in that damn game.

Ronnie Fields! He played with KG at Farrugut HS in the city, he was a big time high flying guard with great potential, him and KG took the team to the state championship game which they actually lost. Anyway he broke his neck in a car accident end of his senior year in HS and never eeally recovered. He played in the CBA a little, but didnt do much. In HS he was one of the next Jordans, great HS player. Any Chicagoin remember him?

On a smaller level Taylor Coppenwrath from the University of Vermont, 3 time american east player of the year and lead Vermont to their stunning upset of deffending champion syracuse in the 2003 NCAA tournament, now doing well in europe but would've loved for him to have made it to the NBA.

But on a bigger level i would have to say Sean May, dude was an absolute beast in college for UNC, but injuries and lack of height mad it difficult for him in the NBA.

This dude was so fun to watch play for UCLA in the mid 90's when I was a little kid. He was only about 6'1", but the kid had a 41" vertical! Led UCLA to the championship in 1995, but never really had the handles or consistency in his game to keep it up in the pros. Still, he's 4th overall in scoring in UCLA's history (which probably creates more NBA players than any other school) and is to this day my favorite college baller ever.

Hollis Price. That guy was absolutely amazing when he played at OU. He was about as good of a college player as there has been in a long time. I guess he just wasn't meant to be in the NBA. He's playing pro ball in Europe now and I'm sure he's getting it done. As an OU fan, I'm kinda biased, but anybody who remembers Hollis Price knows that this guy was the real deal.

Mario Bennett- Arizona St.. Was one hell of a player for the Sun Devils..good shot blocker. I was estatic when the Suns picked him up in the first round..he got injured at the begining of the year..missed four months came back and played 19 games.. Really thought he could of been the future PF for the team.. he then got waived a few days before the start of his second season.. I was suprised to learn that he's been playing overseas the last couple of years and is still playing to this day.

Corliss Williamson-Big Nasty was one my favorite college players EVER..I always forget that he won a championship with Detroit in 04.. I expected to him to be a superstar in the league.

Oh and Casey Jacobson, I thought he would be better in the league than he was just cause his shot was so sweet! What are you talking about he averaged 20+ points for his career and had a nice playoff run with the bucks. I'd say his career panned out really well. He was just injury prone as he got older. It's not like he's Kwame Brown or something.

Keith Brumbaugh, signed with OK state: played against him in AAU and he was ridiculous looked him up and he was one of the top 50 in the country... then he was pulled over on some gun charges or something

Hollis Price, Oklahoma: He went to my High School before I got there and was lights out. Had one of the of best duels in a game I had ever seen against...

Chris Duhon, Duke: was an absolute beast in high school and was put out of the playoffs in by Hollis Price and them purple knights lol. He would dunk on u, shoot it from 40 ft out right in some kids face, be a one man press break, to get to duke and stink.

Shan Foster Vandy: Thought he had a shot, boy was i wrong

and

D.J. Augustine, Texas: was in his conference in bball for a couple years... dude was sick. Guess he still shows flashes and hopefully will get the opportunity soon

ballpd05
03-26-2010, 02:17 PM
two more:

James Parlow, UNO: Highly under recruited and ****ed all over D.J. Augustine while holding him to 7 points. Probably could've been better but he played on same college team as...

Bo McCalebb, UNO: Pure scorer who could score on anybody, but never saw a shot he didn't like. If you looked on NCAA M leading scorers last couple of years he was always up there.

ronnie fields, WOW! someone besides me actually remembers that guy! we played farragut KG's senior year in high school, the two of them were AWESOME. Went to Rock Island High School and played farragut that yearin 95. KG almost went quadruple double on us, and we only lost by 2pts. between KG and Fields i think they had 55 of their 61 pts against us. Which brings me to my guy besidews Fields who should of done somethin and thats PETE MICKAEL. Star at Cincinnati. Played with K-Mart and they would of won it all had martin not broke his leg. Amazing stat with pete, in 4 yrs of high school ball, we never lost more than 2 games in a yr, he went to community college(grades) and he won back to back JUCO titles going undefeated both yrs, then to the NATI for 2 yrs where i think they lost 3 games total while he was there, he was drafted in 2nd rd by knicks or heat, like next to last pick, was traded around then got a blood clot in his leg, and that was the end of his NBA career. He stars overseas now. By the way Rock Island High School in Illinois is where coach Don Nelson starred in the 60's. He was the schools leading everything. So we do have NBA bloodline thru our gym.

Shaun Livingston. He grew up and played not to far away from where I do, so it's nice to see someone make it to the NBA even if it was short lived. And it's really nice to be see'ing him make a comeback lately.

i too liked shaun livingston, had it not been for that horrendous knee injury i think he could have done bigs things
