Should the NBA go back to 5 game 1st Round Series?

Now it is true that some 7 game 1st round series are good, however for most, it is a bore. It appears that the 5 game series in the 1st round were much more exciting and you had a greater chance for upsets as well.

probably wont happen because of the money they'd lose

I love rooting for the underdogs and best of 5 makes it more likely for upsets to occur. Also, if an upset doesn't happen then the better team is more fresh and rested for the later rounds.

I swear you made this exact same thread before...

Maybe a year ago. I think I added 3 Game Series as well which is what it was in the early 80's.

I think they should for the most part. A 1st seed beating an 8th seed 3-1 in a 7 game series; there's almost no point playing to the 4th an final game in my opinion. But a worse seeded team could also surprise a higher seeded team in a 5 game series though.

Thinking about my Raptors having a 6th-8th seed, I think it's more likely that we'd surprise a 1st-3rd seed in 5 games than in 7.

However, I think a 4th vs 5th seed should play the full 7 games as they're closer to eachother in terms of how good their team is. A 3-3 tie in the series is more likely to be seen than in an 1st-8th/2nd-7th matchup.

I think they need to stick with the 7 game series.

Stick with the 7 game series because more often then not, in a 7 game series, the better team will emerge as the victor, and if you all are like me, you want to see these better teams playing in the semi-final rounds and beyond. Upsets are fun too and they will still happen, it just won't be as often. The 06/07 Warriors are a perfect example of this so that proves that upsets can, and will, still happen so I think the 7 game series fits the bill perfectly.

This isn't even a question to me. With many/most of the games having to be on tv, it makes the first round drag on forever. It should be 5 games.

I'd rather it go back to 5. Personal preference.

Some games I"m not interested in watching because, Example: well say team A is the Lakers, say the Lakers swept team B which is San Antonio 4-0 nothing in the regular season. Do I really want to watch the Lakers that dominated the 8th seed sweep 4-0 in the playoffs. What makes it worst is when a team is up 3-1 and the series drags on extra games when you know this isn't a real competitive series. 5 game series would mean either it's a 2-1 series. Or the other team loses out 3-0.

Exactly. I don't even watch the first round anymore. I also think having 8 seeds is ridiculous. But that's the NBA for you.

Honestly I think when you are underdogs and you know you have no shot then you want to see your team a little bit more. When you are title contenders, you are just ready to get the series over with.

I think the NBA should go back to the 5 game format in the 1st round. As you eluded to earlier, it's way more exciting to watch and anything can happen in a 5 game series.

Won't happen. All they care about is selling those tickets.

JB you're the only Mod I know that makes threads.

No 7 game series are here to stay. 2 games makes a huge difference in terms of revenue.

Keep the 7 game series... Its fun to watch... I was never a fan of short series.. I am still in hope for the day that baseball does 7 games in the first round as well...

Nope wont happen. David stern likes money and will probably extend it to 9 games in the next 10 years.

Best of 5 is the way to go in the 1st round.

I remember in 2000 playoffs, the #8 seeded Sacramento Kings (their PG was Jason Williams, not Mike Bibby) almost upset the #1 seed Lakers. The Lakers won the first 2 games in LA, but the Kings won the next 2 games in Sac-town, and then, lakers had to come back in LA for an elimination Game 5.

So yes, I think when the underdog has a chance, it makes it that much more fun.

Now in the first round, u usually seed a top seed win the first 2 games at home, the 8th seed maybe manages to barely win Game #3 on their own home floor, then the top seeded team steals the 4th game on the road, just to come back and wrap up the series in 5, but the top seed, after having 3-1 lead, can just play around carefree for the rest of the series with that 8th seeded team because they have a cushion. To me, that's boring.

a 5 game series would be better mainly because the nba playoffs would be shortened. two months is way too long for the nba playoffs.

Yeah, the problem isn't the length of the series, it's the quality of teams that make the playoffs.

I'd like to limit it to 6 teams, or maybe even 4, but that would kill a ton of money for the NBA not only in playoff games lost but the excitement for the "push for the playoffs" for the 7-8-9-10 seed teams at the end of the playoffs.

For instance, the Raptors are in a "push for the playoffs." It's probably helping their TV ratings and ticket sales a bit, but are they really going to make noise in the playoffs? No.

look at the western conference.. you got 3 teams above .500 who wont make the playoffs.. a potential 8 seed who could be a potential 2-5 seed if it werent for injuries.. The West is so close..no team is greater than another
2-8, I really think they should look into the idea of ..if you dont finish over .500 , you dont make the playoffs..and then have a cross conference playoff,

other than that I miss the 5 game first round series..

Yeah, good point.

I like the cross-conference idea. How about the 12 best teams in the NBA--not East or West--make it into the playoffs? Make them 1-12 seeds and make the playoffs a tournament where 1 plays 12, 2 plays 11, etc.
