I'd have to go with Ray Allen or Steve Nash.

Ray has the smoothest, quickest release, whereas Steve has the most textbook form in the league.

I have a few guys on my list in terms of having the nicest looking jump shot. Here is my list:

Ray Allen
Kobe Bryant
Joe Johnson
Chauncey Billups (although he has more of set shot, nonetheless he has one of the best jumpers in the game)
Melo

Stephen Curry and JJ Redick have gorgeous mechanics. And Steve Nash of course. I don't really agree with Paul Pierce. He has an effective shot, and shoots a high percentage, but a lot of the time he has one of his legs one foot way in front of the other, and he's kind of disproportional. Just not a beautiful shot imo.

Although I love Nash, he is my favorite player since Larry Bird. But like Bird he doesnt really have that pure jumpshot form. Since Nash is so short he is usually forced to release his shot on the way up instead of at the peak of his jump. Ray Allen has the prettiest stroke of all time. As pure as pure can be. Its pretty even when he misses.

surf and turf
03-10-2010, 11:01 AM
A lot of people think that a pure jum shooter is a guy who can shoot good. It is not. Larry Bird was not a pure jump shooter. He barely left the ground on his shot.

Definition of a pure jump shooter.

1 - to realease the ball at the very top of your jump , miliseconds before your body starts to decend. There is a time where your body stops in the air just before falling. So you are briefly suspended in air. Nothing is moving. Thats when you release. Although this is the basis of a pure jump shooter it is not the only aspect. Often the defense alters your shot. So a pure jump shooter should also be able to shoot the ball on the way up and on the way down. Kobe proves this to be very effective.

I agree 100 percent. Nash is a great shooter. But the position of the ball when he shoots is slightly lower then what you would expect from a pure jump shooter. I have been a fan and player of this game for a long time. I was raised on a pure jump shot. Thats the first thing my father told me to learn and i have never heard better advice in my life. Its very hard for me to be immpressed with a jump shot considering my form is purer then 80 percent of NBA players. The two best I have ever witnesses when you add in accuracy , in the big game, against the best defender, off the screen, or the dribble was Andrew Toney and Ray Allen. Allen is almost like a robot. Its always the same. Open or not. He never rushes it. It is equivalent to the swing of Ted Williams.

Yeah, Eric Gordon doesn't have the most textbook form, he kinda holds it out quite far before shooting it, but I like his form. Real smooth.

The thing about developing your own unique awkward follow thru is that you catch defenders off balance. Like Kevin Martin, hes not a great slasher but he gets to the line because of his gunslinger type motion. You have to play up close on him when you see him set that shot up, when for most players they wouldnt even be threats in that position.

I guess you could say that for alot of great shooters, and Kevin is probably the most extreme example.
