DALLAS -- One of the first things many people noticed about Caron Butler after his arrival to the Dallas Mavericks is that the guard likes to chew straws during games.

The NBA obviously took notice as well.

NBA executive vice president Stu Jackson phoned Butler on Tuesday and told him to leave his straws at home. Butler did not play against the Los Angeles Lakers due to a reaction to medication, so he was unavailable for comment.

But the Mavs confirmed that the league is serious about outlawing straw chewing.

"It's against the rules," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said.

A local radio sports talk show host encouraged fans to come to Wednesday night's game against the Lakers bearing straws to show their support for Butler, who came to the Mavericks as part of a seven-player trade with the Washington Wizards on Feb. 13.

His Mavericks teammates, including Dirk Nowitzki, poked fun at their teammate by chewing straws during warmups earlier this week.

The habit is not new to Butler, who reportedly has chewed plastic straws at a rate of 12 per game for years. He disclosed in a chat on NBA.com in March 2009 that he started chewing straws in games as a teenager.

"It calmed me down," he said in the chat. "Then it became one of those things you keep doing."

It won't be the first interesting habit that Butler has had to kick.

In summer 2009, Butler blogged on NBA.com that he had lost 11 pounds just by giving up his daily "addiction" of drinking at least six 12-ounce bottles of Mountain Dew.

"I was going through withdrawals," Butler said on NBA.com. "... Honestly, those first two weeks without The Dew [were] the roughest two weeks of my life. I'm talking headaches, sweats and everything."

Butler said he used to drink the caffeinated soda before Wizards practice and would "knock back two" before games.

I think that's crap. Is it really a safety issue if the player chews a straw on the bench or during warmups? Who cares? You might as well ban baller bands. That is more harmful than straws.

What the? Chewing on straws? That's kinda effed up.

And a 6-pack of Dew a day? Holy Jesus.

It's his life though, I could care less. But damn.

the only reason why i could see the nba banning this is that they think butler could choke on a straw during a game. very oddd habit to chew on straws though.

The day after the mavs beat the lakers, they ban something that helps Butler. Coincidence? The league will do just anything to make sure the lakers make the finals.

ban headbands, the vice grip it has on a players head will kill braincells and inevitably crush the players skull

i've had withdrawals before but not from mountain dew...
hahaha but honestly none of this wouldve ever happened if ESPN actually focused on sports instead of the little ******** stories inside of sports...honestly, I love ESPN with all my heart but sometimes i hate the stupid stories they run just because they're running out of **** to talk about...without ESPN Butler would still be chewin on straws like he's trippin on E

It's no coincidence that this ruling has came about after Butler came to the Mavs. He's been doing it since high school, and just now that he is in Dallas, the commish and his goons have decided to make a situation out of it. Pathetic.

he does chew them while playing too. the other night he was shooting free throws and ran over to the bench to grab another straw. still, stupid on the nba's part to take this so seriously. you cant seriously believe that butler would choke on a straw? theres no way it could clog up your whole throat.

 You 're scandalous. Just because the Mavs played the lakers and won doesnt mean that the league would put a stupid rule up. WOOOW!

Wood floors is a health hazard too. I recommend playing basketball on thick carpets with padding underneath. And can we get some inflatable beach balls in there? Guys are throwing passes harder and harder these days.

Well, if he's chewing the straws while on court during a game situation, this is a smart move by the NBA. Everyone is chastising them, but he could in fact choke on this if he went up for a lay up/dunk and took a hard fall. Its a safety hazard, and the last thing they need is to have a player die from choking in a straw during the game. As bad as it makes them look outlawing something so "petty" as straw chewing, they would look 100x worse if he died from choking on a straw.

i think that the NBA didnt know because he's been doing this for years

now all of sudden everyone knows who Caron is again and it was shown on TV, league found out, and told him no

but i know how Caron feels. I like chewing on stuff too. Not straws, but like little plastic stuff.
my favorite is thread. it's like gum thats not chewy. im chewing some right now

The NBA shouldn't worry about Caron. If they were they should just tell him not to play basketball... the chances of something bad happening in BBall is wayyy more likely to happen compared to choking on a straw.
