Too bad that 1st Round Pick is protected, it would've been great value if it wasnt.

Grizzlies are yearly a lottery team, so hopefully for the Jazz sake its only Top 5 protected.

Yeah if it's anything other than top 5 protected it's a terrible deal for Utah. It could be even if it isn't.

well im hearing back and forth on this, i read from chris mannix that it didnt go through....then i read that it was for a unprotected pick in 2011

Completely agree here. When I saw this, I thought they got something good in return, but like you guys said, if its a top 5 pick, it wont be that bad.

Great move by the grizzlies. They got a guy that helps them immediately by beefing up their bench. They needed this move to stay in contention for a playoff spot.

Deal went through the GM was talking about how they used their depth on the wings to bring in a future asset.

Good protection for if/when Gay leaves. Not as good, obviously, but he could at least do some of the same things.

Bucsfan
02-18-2010, 05:01 PM
but when gay leaves so does ronnie b, his contract is up, he will be a restricted free agent, but still

I guess this means Wes Matthews will be starting now? either that or CJ miles (hopefully not lol)

Ronnie is a cheaper alternative to Gay who wants top money on the Free Agent market.

Memphis probably can afford to match any non-insane contract offered to Brewer and just draft another SF in such a swingman heavy draft.

IMO this is huge for the grizzlies. They had 0 i repeat 0 bench depth and now they have a 6 man. Nice move for them. Im a Rockets fan and im scared now of the Grizzlies

The Utah Jazz have agreed to trade Ronnie Brewer to the Memphis Grizzlies for a protected 2010 first-round pick, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com on Thursday.

The deal gives the Grizzlies yet another athletic swingman and allows the Jazz to save money.

Utah had a bit of a logjam at Brewer's position. His $2.7 million salary was essentially double that because the Jazz are over the luxury-tax threshold.

Yeah you're right actually. I forgot that they still have Wesley Matthews and Kyle Korver who can play good minutes at SG for them. I'm not really a big fan of Korver, but he can shoot the lights out so he can be fairly productive for them.

It's a 2010 pick, but I don't know what the protection is. I'd guess that it's top-ten protected.

The Grizz have 3 1st round picks. Their own along with the Lakers and Nuggs. This deal has been discussed all year with likely the Lakers or Nuggs pick being used.

good luck with Memphis Ronnie, I'ma miss you

tbh his production has been diluted now we have everyone healthy. He was definitely expendable, and too much so to turn down saving 5 million and gaining a 1st I guess. I will miss those steals and athletic dunks he does though.

I hope Wes is our new starting SG and not CJ. I think everyone was set on Wes being the SG of the future anyway (unless we land evan turner in the draft) he plays better defense and can actually drain the 3 ball

Nice deal for Memphis, man they really needed depth.

The Jazz needed to slash salary so it's hard to call this a loss for them when they get a first round pick in return for saving $5 million

They must be desperate to save some money, because they have been playing tremendous lately & I didn't expect them to make any moves today.

Ronnie Brewer last 5 games: 4.6ppg 3.2apg 1.6rpg 0.8spg 9/25FGs in 25 minutes

and we've gone 4-1....you can see why trading him for a pick and saving 5 million appealed to our GM

It's a 2011 1st rounder. The protection goes like this:

The Grizzlies sent the Jazz a 2011 pick that is protected through the 14th spot. In 2012, the pick is protected through the 12th spot. The protection slides if it is not exercised.

Memphis has protection through the 10th pick in 2013 and through the ninth pick in 2014 and 2015. Utah would receive less than $3 million in cash if the pick hasn't been exercised by 2016. -Commercial Appeal

How do the Grizz expect to resign Gay? They can match whatever deal comes in, but it will put them over the cap by a lot, and that is if they even are able to move a couple small deals.

Maybe they don't. Maybe that's the point. They've had a lot of success (by the standards of where they came from to where they are now) improving with low profile players. Maybe they intend to let Gay go because they don't want to pick up the tab he wants, but intend to get more players at lower cost through free agency and the draft.

Great protection for them on that pick, too. I'd venture a guess that Utah will trade it away for something more immediately useful within the next season and a half.

Without knowledge of what the cap will be, this is just hypothetical. Anyway, the Grizz have the 2nd lowest salary this year and only $44m on the books for next year. They match any offer of $14m or less and they would still be under this year's cap. Also, what difference is it if they go over the cap? They'd still be way under the luxury line.

Yeah people dont understand you can go over the cap without reaching the luxury tax. Minny fans just dont like the Grizz and would just love to see him leave. Ronnie's relatively small salary is not going to affect the Rudy situation. Because regardless of if we sign Rudy or not we needed bench help. And were going to get it this summer anyway. This is just a trial run to see if he fits our team.

Rudy is going to get the same wake up call as Boozer and Josh Smith got last year. With a projected lower salary cap and new collective bargaining agreement teams are not going to overspend on players who dont deserve it. The only team stupid enough to overspend on him is New York.

The price wasn't crazy, either. Utah will get a first-round pick from the Grizzlies, as early as 2011, with the pick "protected" so it won't be too valuable.

Utah will get the pick in 2011 if it's not in the top 14 of the draft. In 2012 if it's not in the top 12. In 2013 if it's not in the top 10. In 2014 or 2015 if it's not in the top 9.

The draft pick sent to Miami in the Marion, Jermaine Oneal swap was deferred like that too. Different conditions than this one, but similar idea.

Im serious, they need some defense first player in that lineup who can play well off the ball. It will provide them more balance and may even help Mayo's game as he becomes more of a focal point again.

they'll be ok. they have their pick and the knicks' pick next year and the grizz to follow. they can make a draft day trade to get someone to help now rather than later. (like the battier for gay trade).
