View Full Version : Warriors turned down Memphis’ offer of OJ Mayo + salaries

02-17-2010, 09:01 PM

* Trade market’s suddenly exploding today, and if I’m the Warriors, I’m a little worried about the sudden money flexibility developing in Clipper Compound. Anyway, thought W’s fans would like to get in on some of the chatter, even if it’s involving what their team DIDN’T do…

-Yes, the Warriors are apparently serious about holding onto Monta Ellis through tomorrow’s trade deadline, unless they’re knocked over with a monster offer.

They’ll keep listening. They have some interested teams. They’ve perked up interest by holding Ellis out last night and now tonight, explained by his minor knee injury.

But, by all indications, so far the Warriors aren’t eager to trade Ellis, even if he would be interested in a new location, if they’re beginning to realize he’s not a perfect fit with Stephen Curry and if Memphis is very interested in acquiring Ellis.

According to multiple NBA sources, the Warriors rejected Memphis’ intriguing offer of OJ Mayo + contract-filler.

This deal was first offered at the start of the season and possibly is still on the table, in Memphis’ view, and still rejected by the Warriors.

Now, unless there are humongous chemistry issues with Mayo, I don’t know how the Warriors could do much better in an Ellis deal.

(Well, I could think of one way–if the W’s could lure Rudy Gay from Memphis. Gay’s a restricted free agent this summer, so if Ellis remains a Warrior through the deadline, Gay is the name I’d remember for a trade in July/August.)

Mayo is 6-4 and listed at 210 pounds, 20 or 30 pounds heavier than Ellis, easily. He’s explosive, long, and a truer shooting guard with some ball-handling skills who would seem to have a better shot at blending with Curry.

But Mayo, of course, is far from perfect: His defense, according to one source, has been “dreadful” this season, and he does like to have the ball in his hands almost as much as Ellis.

You can see why the W’s wouldn’t do this:

-Ellis sells tickets, period.

-His chemistry with Curry might not be great, but you have no idea how Mayo would click with Curry, either.

-If the Grizzlies are offering Mayo around, how great can he be?

-The Warriors can’t bring themselves commit to either a fire sale (dump every big contract) or a roster upgrade (trade expirings + young players for solid vets), so they’ll stay in their normal tread-water, scared middle ground.

-Yes, this deal would dump the remaining $44M and 4 years left in Ellis’ deal, with not much long-term money coming back, but if the W’s want to keep Mayo, they’d have to pay him eventually the same kind of money.

Again, much ado about something that won’t/didn’t happen. But thought some people might be interested to see what’s out there.

Trading OK seriously???

02-17-2010, 09:08 PM
warriors are stupid.

02-17-2010, 09:09 PM
Did they just say no to OJ Mayo.....Holy [beep]!

02-17-2010, 09:09 PM
Why would Memphis try and move Mayo? He's gonna be real real good, in my opinion, in 2-3 years.

02-17-2010, 09:10 PM
And secondly, why did Golden State turn down a deal for Mayo?!

02-17-2010, 09:13 PM
man, id take that in a heartbeat from golden states part of view

02-17-2010, 09:13 PM
golden state was dumb for not taking mayo. kid is gonna be a legit star in a few years.

02-17-2010, 09:15 PM

02-17-2010, 09:15 PM
Curry-Mayo-Randolph-1st rd pick.....coulda been good in a few years.

02-17-2010, 09:16 PM
Golden State would be dumb for rejecting this trade, but the source doesn't seem to accurate. I highly doubt Memphis would have made this offer for Monta Ellis.

02-17-2010, 09:17 PM
My main problem with this is Memphis has overachieved this year....why would they break up the core? Mayo is the star of that team.

02-17-2010, 09:17 PM
This makes no sense to me, and is hard to believe.

Why would Memph want Ellis and why would Warriors decline Mayo?

None if it makes sense imo.

02-17-2010, 09:18 PM
I have a hard time believing that they'd turn down an offer for O.J. Mayo.

02-17-2010, 09:18 PM
Curry and Mayo on the same team...

Hmmm tasty.

02-17-2010, 09:19 PM
I call BS

02-17-2010, 09:20 PM
wow, bad move Ws

02-17-2010, 09:26 PM
I don't believe this, if anything i think Memphis would be trying to get bench help by dangling Rudy Gay or something.. but not Mayo for Monta.. Stupid move by GS if they turned this down..

02-17-2010, 09:28 PM
The warriors are tied for my favorite west conference team and they are just as dumb as my fav team the sixers. Mayo is much better than ellis and he would be a nice fit with curry guaranteed. I would do this deal in a heartbeat, if the griz offered an iggy for amyo and filler deal I would do it.

02-17-2010, 09:35 PM
I'm calling BS on this one. I really don't think the Griz would even think about trading Mayo right now. Gay, maybe, but not Mayo.

02-17-2010, 09:36 PM
I can't see how Memphis would be that stupid. Oj is younger with a more rounded game, and they're finally winning. Monte has a ridiculous contract is injury prone.

02-17-2010, 09:37 PM
surprised they even offered it. I thought Mayo was a huge part of their successful season thus far.

02-17-2010, 09:39 PM
the article and writer get's the official...

02-17-2010, 09:42 PM
Lets not forget who wrote the article, none other than Tim Kawacrapi

02-17-2010, 09:48 PM
Im calling BS

02-17-2010, 10:25 PM
Tim Kawakami is garbage......he straight up made this **** up. how is this idiot a journalist, the only team he likes is the A's and every other team he bashes.

02-17-2010, 10:26 PM
I would have did that in a heartbeat

02-17-2010, 10:37 PM
The Grizzlies have been surprisingly active in the hours leading up to the deadline, offering O.J. Mayo to Golden State for Monta Ellis. The overture from Memphis, reported by the San Jose Mercury News , confirmed their long-held interest in the Warriors' electrifying guard. Golden State, however, rejected the offer, leaving Ellis hoping for other escape avenues from the dysfuntion in the Bay Area.

The Grizzlies also have been offering point guard Mike Conley to several teams, including Portland, for expiring contracts, sources say.

02-17-2010, 10:37 PM
BS ...

1.Memphis would never offer Mayo
2.Warrior are not that stupid to resist a Curry-Mayo back court

02-17-2010, 10:38 PM
This article seems fishy

02-17-2010, 10:39 PM
I can't believe this article. Not at all...

02-17-2010, 10:40 PM
It is a really hard trade for GSW.

Curry's first year. Monta is playing great. These guys haven't played that long together. I think they should give it more time.

I do believe in Curry. I think he is going to be one of the best players in the league. He can compete with guys like Durant and LeBron in a couple years. He has a lot of tools and his shooting ability is unreal.

02-17-2010, 10:42 PM
Did they just say no to OJ Mayo.....Holy [beep]!

lol, Monta is so much better than mayo.

02-17-2010, 10:45 PM
Curry-Mayo-Randolph-1st rd pick.....coulda been good in a few years.

Curry, Ellis, Randolph & 1st round pick will be just as good in a few years.

02-17-2010, 10:55 PM
If true, I'd accept it right away.. Monta's great but IMO Mayo will be a lot bettter down the road

02-17-2010, 11:07 PM
they confirmed it on csn bay area warriors post game..rumer is true

02-17-2010, 11:20 PM
Warriors are fools, but why would Memphis want Monta?

02-17-2010, 11:26 PM
Warriors are fools, but why would Memphis want Monta? for the same reason you got a old guy on your avater you an the grizzlies are idiots

02-17-2010, 11:29 PM
lol, Monta is so much better than mayo.

02-17-2010, 11:30 PM
Warriors are fools, but why would Memphis want Monta?

Cuz montas from their

02-17-2010, 11:43 PM

 to your

Please tell me how Mayo is better than Monta right now. Monta brings it every night without fail while mayo has plenty of off nights. Lets not forget how good of a season Monta had 2 years ago before the moped incident. Last year he was coming off the injury and after a full season after the injury he's back to his old form and is still a young player.

02-18-2010, 01:00 AM
Lord have mercy! I know OJ has been the 3rd option for most of this season, but if the idiot front office lets him go, I don't know what I'll do. He won't BE the 3rd option next year or the year after. GRIZZ FRONT OFFICE; quit smoking that ****!

02-18-2010, 01:00 AM
Dumb move IMO!

02-18-2010, 01:02 AM
And a big THANK YOU to the Ws front office for rejecting it!

02-18-2010, 01:06 AM
if this is true, bad move for GS.

OJ Mayo is gonna be a real good player.

02-18-2010, 01:09 AM
hmmm. wow. although MOnta is a GREAT player, i think OJ would have been better for the warriors down the road. I think Steph Curry is more valuable to the team, and have a true 2 guard next to him wud be better for tehre future. Woulda have been interesting to see OJ in a warriors uniform

02-18-2010, 01:34 AM
Embarrassing for the Warriors management if true

02-18-2010, 03:02 AM
GS has gone lost their damn mind!

02-18-2010, 03:19 AM
Warriors are ********.. Ellis doesn't play D and Mayo is going to be a star!

Memphis is probably trying to do this deal to make the playoffs..

02-18-2010, 03:20 AM
I am not quite sure Mayo is better than Ellis today, but he will definetly be in a few years.

02-18-2010, 03:22 AM
ellis is way better then mayo...ellis does play d an pass's when he wants too...only way ill trade monta if its for a big

02-18-2010, 09:44 AM
I'd turn down that offer too if I was the warriors, Mayo is Garbage compared to Monta

02-18-2010, 10:02 AM
we will take him on the jazz anyday!!!

02-18-2010, 10:43 AM
Why would Memphis try and move Mayo? He's gonna be real real good, in my opinion, in 2-3 years.

And secondly, why did Golden State turn down a deal for Mayo?!

If the rumors are true then the answer for the first is because they are stupid and for the second because they are more stupid

02-18-2010, 11:00 AM
I think most of you are wrong.

#1. Not surprised too much that the Griz want Monta. He's a better second option than Mayo is. He just plays worse as a first option under Don Nelson.

#2. Not surprised at all that the Warriors turn this deal down, O.J. Mayo is a worthless defender who gets outscored by his opponents and generally ball hogs the ball and clogs up an offense similarly to Monta. It'd be a sideways move at best for the Dubs. He is not the piece they need in Golden State right now.

What they need is a new owner/GM/Coach/BIG (and probably Monta gone for that big) <-- In that order. Then the top 5 draft pick to supplement it.

02-18-2010, 11:08 AM
The GS front office is usually dysfunctional, but Ellis is better than Mayo-- this isn't the worst of their sins...

02-18-2010, 12:08 PM
Warriors turned down Mayo because they already have an undersized two guard who can't play defense but can shoot the lights out..it's the same reason they are trying to find a new home for Ellis, just not for the same type of player!!! Come on people, not that hard to figure out.

Curry is Warriors man for future..everything needs to fit around him.
