Denver Nuggets coach George Karl is again battling cancer and will take a leave of absence from the team, a source said Tuesday.

The cancer isnít considered life-threatening. Karl will make the announcement at a news conference Tuesday evening in Denver.

Karlís return to the Nuggets depends on how he responds to treatment. While the situation is serious, doctors are confident Karl will overcome the cancer. He received his first treatment Tuesday.

Karl agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million extension for next season. The source said the health issue contributed to Karl agreeing to only a one-year extension.

Nuggets assistant coach Adrian Dantley has replaced Karl during his previous absences

Best wishes cancer is horrible :(

Hope he fully recovers. Wonder if there's a high rate of cancer in the family-he has it, and the son had it. Some types of cancer run through families.
He needs to focus on himself and let others worry about the team right now.

Get better Coach Karl, one of the really good guys that is currently part of the NBA family.

Get well soon, George!

One note about the thread title - it appears that Karl will be going to Cleveland for the Nuggets' next game, so it may be the case that his "leave" will not be extended but will be somewhat game by game.

02-17-2010, 04:27 AM
Is the leave going to depend on how his treatments are scheduled, then? Seems like he should go home and rest, but I'm not a doctor, so...

It's a good thing to see different fans come together and wish coach well; always like him since he was coaching the sonics. Hopes he gets better and have a speedy recovery.

Deppending on how far the cancer has advanced he may be able to coach or not.

The father of my Girl was so tired after each Chemo treatment that he couldnt even walk.

His case was too advancer when Doctors catched it anyway, nothing could really be done.

I hope they have been on time to save George.

Its an horrible disease that worns out the body and mind of the Ill person and destroys everyone around....

There are only two dates that it is known that Karl won't be present, although in others it appears that he'll be on the bench. He will, reportedly, be on the plane to Cleveland, though.

Karl, 58, will have a 6 1/2-week treatment period, which he started Tuesday. Karl said he likely will miss games Feb. 25 at Golden State and March 10 at Minnesota, and could miss some others when he knows more about how he responds to treatment.

"The unknown is still the unknown,'' said Karl, who will be replaced during his absences by assistant coach Adrian Dantley. "How the treatment affects me.''

With the treatment expected to affect Karl more during the late stages of it, Karl said he might take it easy during some practices. But he hopes he will be at full strength for the playoffs.

"Basically, I believe my team is a championship team,'' Karl said. "My hope is I can focus 100 percent during the playoff run.''

Before missing the Golden State game, Karl will be on the bench for the next three games, including big ones Thursday at Cleveland and Sunday at home to Boston. Karl's attorney, Bret Adams, believes Karl has the fortitude for his game absences to be on the lower end as he goes through treatments.

"George is one of the toughest guys that I've ever known,'' Adams said.fanhouse (http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/02/16/george-karl-taking-leave-of-absence-due-to-cancer/)
