View Full Version : Roger Mason Requests Trade From Spurs

Fresno
02-15-2010, 09:55 PM
The San Antonio Spurs’ front office is working with Roger Mason’s(notes) agent to trade the veteran guard to a team where he can have a significant role.

“Roger had a terrific season last year after the Spurs had a bunch of injuries, and now that everyone is back healthy and his minutes are limited, the Spurs are trying to do the right thing and find a good spot for him,” Mason’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, told Yahoo! Sports on Monday.

Mason, 29, is averaging 19 minutes and 7.4 points per game. He averaged 30 minutes and nearly 12 points a game a season ago. Mason is in the final season of a two-year deal with Spurs.

One league executive says there’s “significant” interest from other teams in dealing for Mason.

Is anybody interested in this guy? Hes a good player who was good for San Antonio last season but he doesn't fit on the Spurs because he cant play SF.

I remember when he was with Washington, hes very underrated and could probably start or be a 6th Man on a lot of teams.

For the Jazz no interest, but I'm sure he would demand a lot of noise on the market.

Should be interesting to see what the Spurs do with him.

This.

Mason is versatile and can play the SG position or stabilize the PG position to allow the PG to rest. For a 6'5 guy capable of playing both PG & SG he has some good value.

Not to mention he is a good spot shooter who had like 5 or 6 20+ Point games last season in place of Manu.

undersized two guard. I really don't see a lot of teams going after him.

undersized two guard at 6'5?

Orlando for Gortat and Bass?

That would be an outrageously good deal for the Spurs... The Magic lose all their front court depth for another 3 point jacker, who would be taking minutes from Vince, JJ and Pietrus...

Awful deal for the Magic.

What about this ridiculous trade?

Knicks:
Roger Mason Jr, Michael Finley, Matt Bonner, Ian Mahimi, Theo Ratliff

Spurs:
Eddy Curry, Future 1st Round Pick

Knicks waive Finley, Bonner, Ratliff they wait 30 days and resign with the Spurs

Probabaly a Late 1st Round Pick or another swingman.

RMJ could be a very underrated addition to a Title Contender.

Eddy Curry doesnt fit in NY, but if he has really gotten himself into shape he could be a valuable trading chip next year at $10 Million espescially if he can play as good as he did 4 seasons ago in the half court offense.

Dude has a 3 year donut, literally in the middle of a pretty solid career.

Average size for a two guard is 6'6. And I've seen him play, he played in Toronto early on his career. While his shooting has improved immensely, his court vision is still lackluster to be PG. The only contending team I could see him where he might be effective is in Cleveland but they're kind of packed in the 1 & 2 area.

Orlando, Boston, and young teams like the grizzlies and the Thunder should make calls for him.
The bulls need 3 point shooting off the bench, since the Gordon departure.

Not sure if the contracts match but they are both disgruntled players that could fill a need for both teams.

I changed the title, I think "Mason demands trade" is a bit misleading. Everywhere the story has been reported it says the Spurs are happy to move Mason to where he can get some playing time, there doesn't seem to be any real problems between the two sides.

Yeah whoever pitched Roger Mason for Tyrus Thomas that does make sense, though they'd need fillers for the Spurs side. Would be a lot better then most things Chicago has been rumored to get. Would be better then Jannero Pargo & Devin Brown off the bench. But I'm still hoping the Nuggets can get Tyrus, so hope that don't happen.

I wouldn't mind Boston dealing for him. Just don't know what we have to offer. what's his contract like? Nevermind I checked it. Boston could use him as a backup PG, and play some SG minutes as well. They could likely offer, Scalabrene, or Tony Allen and Sheldon Williams to make this work. Not sure Spurs would want any of those guys though.

Mason hasnt requested a trade. His agent made that clear..all his agent has said is that Mason wants to play, just like all players would like to, and that Mason woul be comfortable finishing the season with us.

http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2010/02/masons-agent-it.html

Mark Bartelstein, the agent for Spurs guard Roger Mason Jr., has clarified comments about Mason's desire to be traded to a team that could offer more playing time.

"It's not a trade demand," Bartelstein told the Express-News on Monday night. "It's simply, if there's an answer to the problem of not enough minutes, and everybody can come out good, they should look at that. That's all that's going on."

Bartelstein said Mason was "happy playing for (Gregg Popovich) and San Antonio has been good to him."

"It's just that players like to play," Bartelstein said.

Bartelstein insisted Mason would be comfortable finishing the season with the Spurs, should a suitable trading partner not be found.

"One of the things I really enjoy about working with the Spurs is you can have conversations like this, where you can find something that is good for everyone," Bartelstein said. "They really try to do the right thing by players."

Tyrus for Mason makes most sense, i remember seeing tho that Mason wanted to finish his career in San Antonio, and he will always want to be a Spur.

I have a feeling Presti will take a seriously look at maybe trying to bring him to OKC. I think he could fit pretty well with our young group. He's kinda streaky sometimes, but overall...he's a solid player and you can never have too many 3-point threats. I'd be fine if we got him.

If you ever want to see Greg Popvich punch one of his own players right in the face, give him Sasha Vujacic.

I really don't think the Spurs would take Sasha, he's just way too undisciplined. It's not even close.

Is that the best you could come up with?

C-Van
02-16-2010, 04:29 PM
I really don't see the Spurs letting go of him quite, maybe this summer...unless we are bringing in a strong defender up front. We could use somebody tall to play center who can rebound and block shots whenever Timmy takes a sit. The only rumor I saw that I could potentially see Popovich taking is Mason for Tyrus Thomas...but I have heard that Thomas is a headache, so I'm not even sure about that one.

Knicks & Spurs Trade Idea!

- SG Roger Mason, PF M.Bonner, & Cash considerations to the Knicks for Eddie Curry.

Spurs Lineup:

C) Curry/McDyess/Ratliff/Iahamni
PF) Duncan/D.Blair
SF) Jefferson/Bogans
SG) M.Ginobli/M.Finley/M.Hairston
PG) T.Parker/G.Hill/

No way Spurs do it unless Knicks throw in a future 1st Rounder so they can have the money needed to sign 2 MAX players + a very good veteran starter.

Mason is very valuable.

Expiring contract, solid scorer, reliable 3pt shooter.

If you're a team that wants to free up cap space for next year, but still hopes to contend this year, he would be an amazing get.

Miami, Toronto, Memphis, Chicago, etc.
