View Full Version : Derrick Rose: "I want people to fear me"

DALLAS Derrick Rose has been pulled this way and that this weekend. His sore back and right hip have been pushed and prodded. His beloved nap schedule has been rudely ignored.

"Sleeping time is horrible here," Rose said Saturday morning with a smile. "But I wouldn't trade this for nothing in the world."

Look past Rose's weary eyes and there is something unmistakable about his countenance: The Bulls' first All-Star since Michael Jordan in 1998 knows he now belongs among the NBA's elite.

Just as powerfully for someone who grew up dreaming of this stage as he ran on the asphalt playgrounds deep in the heart of Englewood, Rose understands what this means.

"There's focus on me and that makes you play that much harder," Rose said during a quieter, private moment earlier this week. "I'm a Chicagoan and it means a lot to represent the Bulls this way. I want to make people proud. And this can make the future bright for the organization.

"We're going to get the right players. We're going to get the franchise back to where it belongs."

The aw-shucks routine is still part of Rose's makeup and it's still genuine. But watching Rose interact with teammates like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Kevin Garnett players who have won NBA championships and most valuable player awards there also is a comfort level forming in making the bold statement on and off the court.

And Rose has yet to turn 22.

"You can see when I play that people are trying to make sure they shut me down," Rose said in the one-on-one interview. "I want to get to the level where every night we play, people say, 'Man, I got him tonight. I gotta get rest. I got DRose tonight.' Hopefully that level is coming.

"I think I'm getting a name. I want people to fear me in this league and know I can play a little bit. I hope word gets around."

It is.

There's an old saying in basketball that exists from the playground to these grand stages: Players know. And everyone from Chris Paul to Chris Bosh has been singing Rose's praises this weekend.

They've seen the same development Rose has. They've witnessed a young player becoming more assured in his ability to be The Man.

"What Derrick's going to see is you walk with your chest out a lot more," said Bosh, a five-time All-Star. "You're like, 'Yeah, I'm an All-Star.' Your teammates bring it up all the time. It gives you a boost. People recognize you more. It's good from an individual standpoint."

Paul, considered the gold standard point guard, talked about Rose being more decisive with his decision-making this season.

As usual, this development has stemmed from Rose's work ethic. As Saturday's mostly-meaningless Eastern Conference practice ended, James, Wade and Dwight Howard entertained fans with light-hearted contests.

Rose, perhaps mindful that his hip injury has limited him of late, worked on his jumper all alone at the other basket.

"Yeah, while everybody else was fooling around, he was the one guy shooting," Orlando and East All-Star coach Stan Van Gundy said. "That's something as a coach you notice and put in the back of your mind. This is a real serious guy.

"Just watching him in the team meeting and in practice, you become very impressed with his maturity and approach. He isn't as much into the revelry of things as he is into the game itself. Beyond his playing ability, which I was already impressed with, that's impressive."

Rose said he became more serious about reaching this level during long summer workouts in Santa Monica, Calif.

"After I won Rookie of the Year, I wanted to take the next step and become an All-Star," Rose told the Tribune. "I want to win something every year. Hopefully, one day I will get MVP.

"I was going hard in the summer every day and for me to put that work in and not reach this goal this year would've hurt. And now that I've made it there's just excitement. My family and friends can't wait to see me in the game.

"I know my Mom will be crying. When I found out I made it, she had to get off the phone because she was crying so hard. I started getting texts from all my relatives because she called and told them all.

"Coming from where I come from and all my brothers who played basketball and I end up the one to be an NBA All-Star. It's crazy. But I love it."

VIA tribune. this kid is going to be a straight up beast.

As dumb as it is that this thread was posted in the NBA Forum, this post is ridiculous.

All he said was that he wants to get to the level where people around the league fear him. Maybe if you actually read the article you'd know that.

No on in music does. There's a best selling book out there right now that offers up that literary plaigerism is akin to 'musical sampling' among the younger generations - no one cares. Copyright law begs to differ, but so long as royalties are paid when they are due, both lawyers and artists don't care...

The paradigm is changing!?
