View Full Version : What Star Players play well without the Ball?

Basically what guys can be dominant without having to control the ball for most of the play?

I ask because some people seem to think guys like Wade, CP3, Lebron etc are guys who need the ball in their hands all the time to be effective.

Thoughts!!!!

Haha! So TRUE!! That's actually the most frustrating thing about watching the Magic play. I really don't see how Dwight is supposed to develop his game offensively if he never touches the ball. I grow so sick and tired of watching them bring the ball down court and having VC or Rashard chuck up jumpers, especially when Dwight is standing right under the basket. I would be pissed if I was him and I'd start banging some heads around. Atleast he doesn't let himself get down about it and still produces on the boards and defense.

Gilbert Arenas playing with his BB guns...

On a serious note...
Pau Gasol... This guy is averaging about 7-9 shots a game and he makes about 4-6 shots... He runs the floor and grabs rebounds... He is definitely an superstar and it frustrates me why they wont give him more touches...

Melo and Durant. They both take a decent number of shots, but they dont completely dominant the ball like CP3, Wade, and Lebron usually do. Your not gonna see Melo dribble all over the floor. He usually gets to a spot on the floor then is given the ball, and then makes a move.

if Wade had Billups as his PG he would be doing the same thing....

Dwight Howard......they never give him the ball

Incorrect. As of late, he's getting more touches than anyone on the team, so we can stop the fuss.

As for superstars that move well without the ball -- In his prime, I'd pick Rip Hamilton, the guy is still amazing till today at getting open, and playing without the ball. Ray Allen is another guy who's great at it. Kobe, obviously. Lebron, without a doubt. Haven't watched much of Roy, so I can't say anything about him.

I think the definition of this is something who fills the stats sheets without taking alot of shots during the game. D. Howard and J. Smith are the exact definition of this. M. Camby could be a sleeper pick of someone who does this. Kobe, Durant, Wade, Lebron and any point guard shouldnt be in discussion because 50% of the game is in their hands.

Parts of the game when Kobe doesnt have the ball he gets no points and you dont know he is on the court. Then he will throw up 10 points in 2 minutes but he gets the ball every possession during that time.

Every player needs touches to impact the game, and guards and wing guys who bring the ball up (like James, Wade and Bryant) and point guards most especially, need the ball because that is how they create offence, though each of those guys show up on D, but nobody needs the ball in their hand on D.

As for guys who carry a huge impact without bring up the ball or setting up plays, I'd say Duncan (he spreads the floor as justifiably paranoid defences are always paying attention to him), Ray Allen who spreads the floor and is great at coming off screens while Peirce and Rondo bring the ball up. Garnett likewise doens't need to bring the ball up or have the plays start with him. Rip Hamilton and Tayshawn Prince are having off years this season, but both carry a great impact on the game without handling the ball (I know they aren'st super stars) and Shane Battier and Dwight Howard don't need the ball. Battier spread the floor and Dwight usually scores in the high teens with only ten shots and rarely handles the ball or sets up plays.

Hate to say it but the 3 best players off the ball are arguably the 3 best players in the league...LeBron, Kobe & D-Wade.

Roy is a terrific player, one of my favorite actually, but playing off the ball is his major weakness. It's why guys like Oden and Rudy don't play as well with him as say with Miller. It's why Roy and Miller have struggled together.

Howard actually gets around 15-16 shots per game; it only looks like ten because they don't include free throw attempts.

Agreed to an extent. Before this season, I would rank Roy as one of the players most dependent upon having the ball in his hands. He has gotten a little better at coming off of screens since playing with Miller, but he is little more than an average player without the ball.

I don't agree about Rudy not playing well with him. Fernandez and Roy was the most effective backcourt for the Blazers last season. Roy may not have been able to play without the ball, but Rudy is so good at playing without the ball that they play very well together.

It doesn't mean they don't know how to play without having the ball.
