View Full Version : Would having Lebron James in the Dunk Contest make it better or worse?

Lebron James is well-known for his great all-around play and his high-flying powerful dunks in games. He said he'd like to do the dunk contest last season, but Dwight said that he thinks Lebron is more of an in-game dunker and that he didn't believe he'd go through with it. And he was right, Lebron was iffy going into this season and changed his mind as it drew closer and closer.

Here is a recap of the McDonald's HS Dunk Contest that Lebron won a couple of years ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kdvMExxakY

His dunks were plain and tasteless, he was booed by the fans, yet the annoucers apparently couldn't contain their excitement and Lebron walked away victorious. From my perspective, each of the other dunkers clearly out-performed him, yet he went on to win the contest.

So I ask, do you think seeing Lebron, perform these dunks (or something along those lines) and possibly win the 2010 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, would be better or worse?

Don't need him. He backed out, so he aint welcomed no more. I rather watch Shannon "TNT legs" Brown, the guy who should've won that Dunk Contest against LeBron in that high school dunk contest.

It would be much worse.... everyone is on Lebron's nutsack about his dunking even though he basically just jumps high.

That being said, the whole competition is a joke, and has been since they let Nate win a couple years ago when he finally dunked on his 17th attempt.

He is afraid of losing to some "Nobodies".

He is just being a baby.

That's just it though, he wouldn't lose. Everyone would give him 10's for his lame dunks just because he is Lebron.

That's what happened in the initial McKie's dunk contest in HS... Lebron did some plain dunks where he jumped high and he won.

He'd prob get the win with a lay-up.

Wow LBJ's dunk on that contest were so boring.

Brown should have won that easy, that running 360 was sick.

And the announcers would call his creativity brilliant.

Better for marketing as he brings star power.

The actual competition would be worse though as Lebron doesn't have dunks that aren't based on power (unless he plans on breaking the goal). He lacks the flair to make a dunk stick out outside of his leaping and power.

The fact that he would win automatically unless you get a real dunk committee is another problem

Cmon all you Lebron haters get your heads out of Kobe's butt for a minute and realize he won't do the dunk contest because it has become a mere shadow of what it once was and he doesn't need to step down to the level of competing against "nobodies"...If something could happen along the lines of what Shaq was talking about where other superstars like Kobe and VC would get involved then he'd probably come out and win it...He'd just need an assistant to give him more creative ideas for his dunks...

Get your head out of your own butt.... who mentioned Kobe here??

All that has been said is that Lebron is a power dunker. That equals BORING in a dunk competition.

He backed out of a competition he said he would do last year and Shaq covered for his *** by mentioning an injured Vince and Kobe who are both older.

He didn't even mention Wade because he feared Flash would show him up, and if you think Shannon Brown can't keep up with him dunking check their high school contest.

Let's see...

LBJ announces on national TV that he's gonna be dunking next year (aka: this year's competition).

He doesn't keep his promise.

Shaq covers his butt by saying that the current field is nowhere close to LBJ's level (clearly a lie) and asks both VC and KB to participate, plus another marquee dunker.

VC and KB can still dunk but nowhere as near as good as when they were in their athletic dunking prime.

Put the 3 of them together in thei primes and LBJ wouldn't even go through the first round. VC would take first place with ease and depending on the 4th contestant, Kobe or that one.

@CrochetyOldMan, Kobe may only have a 38" vertical, but his creativity is leaps-and-bounds better than Lebron's, put a young Kobe and VC into a dunk contest with Lebron and the "King" gets smashed.

If Shaq wants a marquee matchup, why don't we put Lebron up against Dwight, Wade and Melo, so we can see Lebron matchup against marquee guys his own age!

The dunk contest doesnt need LeBron, it needs to go back to just having dunkers, not stars. The contest was great to watch when it was those kinds of guys. If I said names like Jason Richardson and Desmond Mason the first thing their known for is dunking, same with a guy like Shannon Brown and Demar DeRozan.

Having guys like Nate is a real turnoff for the contest because his scores will be higher cause hes a little guy dunking. With Dwight its kind of the same because he has so much hype and starpower he got a 50 literally throwing the ball through the hoop, yeah hes has some awesome dunks but a 50 for not even really dunking is ashame.

Outside of Nate I love the lineup this year with Wallace, Brown and presumably DeRozan.

As someone who has seen Lebron since he was in high school I can tell you that he is not a contest dunker and even his in game dunks can sometimes leave you wondering "is that all you got?". He isn't even one of the top 2 dunkers on the Cavs (J Moon and JJ). Having Lebron in the dunk contest would be nothing more than a stunt to get the average fan excited about the contest again. This contest used to mean something back in the day. Bring back MJ vs Dominique!

Lebron's HS dunk was boring but I think when you add a superstar to the dunk contest it makes it a lot better. At least from an anticipation perspective.

it would be worse because much like the high school dunk contest he was in
he undeservedly won just because he was lebron james...he did regular ole dunks that were not creative and he will won....
so no thanks keep him out
