View Full Version : Who is the 2nd best team in the West?

I am watching the Clippers/Nuggets game, and Doug Collins says the Nuggets are the 2nd best team in the West behind the Lakers. I disagree however. I would have to say the Spurs are. They have the experience and are starting to get healthy with Manu coming back.

I wouldn't say the Spurs. They've shown too much inconsistency in the past few weeks, and are beginning to look tired in 4th quarters. The Nuggets, when fully healthy, are the second best team in the West. Closely trailing is Dallas, or San Antonio.

I'm going to go with the Mavs. Nuggets a close 2nd to the Mavs if not tied.

The Spurs... give it time, you'll see.

What? I was going to select the Lakers as 2nd since the Spurs are the best in the west, but there was no option for that? *scratches head*

Dallas for obvious reasons. Already beat all the west playoff teams except Portland.

Lakers, Nuggets, Spurs, Suns, Jazz, Thunder have all been beat by Dallas, not to mention beating the Celtics and Cavs. (Haven't played Orlando yet)

1-2 against Lakers
1-0 against Nuggets
2-1 against Spurs
1-1 against Jazz
1-0 against Thunder
1-0 against Suns
0-1 against Portland

Spurs...I think they have the second best chance of coming out of the West. All they need is a lucky stretch of health for the last 20 games of the season and the postseason.

My vote is for Dallas as well. They are looking like a championship contender. They are accomplishing this with Josh Howard still trying to find his game and staying injured..facepalm. Can't believe the mavs didn't trade him..How does a Dirk and Josh Smith, Dirk & Gerald Wallace, Dirk & Caron Butler combo sound?

I said Denver in pre-season, and I'm saying Denver now.

Being as objective as possible, I think it would have to be considered a toss-up between Dallas and Denver. I voted Nuggets because I believe they're built better for the playoffs (and have lost a lot of their regular season games due to playing down to lesser opponents). And because I'm a Nuggets fan. Dallas beat us once this season, so for now they have bragging rights, I suppose. But for now I'd say we're pretty much neck and neck, and we'll have to see how the dust settles on the court to resolve it.

FWIW, I think both Melo and Dirk also have to be considered strong MVP candidates at this point. Not ahead of LBJ strong, perhaps, but right on the cusp.

I agree with DenButsu. I think it's a toss up between Denver and Dallas. Denver may even have a slight edge because of the playoffs last season, but the Spurs??? Cmon people, they are good, but they showed in the playoffs last year that their time is coming to an end.

I think Denver is right now (accidently voted for Dallas though)...but I think by the time the playoffs get here the Spurs will be.

Lol @ Melo being injured...Marion held his *** to 5-19 shooting. And if he was injured why did he play 31 minutes? Don't give me excuses, Dallas has been batteling injuries all season long.

It's close between DAL and DEN, but I'll have to go with DAL because DAL is 16-11 (68%) against above .500 teams while DEN is 15-7 (46%).

Yeeaahhh...well, unfortunately, I spoke before I let my mind do the math. Technically, it's total wins over total games played against over .500 teams so I spoke too soon. Denver's got the edge with 68% over 59%. So although Denver's had the lighter schedule, they've got the edge there.

I think the Jazz/Spurs/Nuggs have a better case than the Mavs. Im really not impressed with what theyve accomplished this year.

JKiddFan4Life
01-22-2010, 05:07 PM
DEN and UTA, definitely because they've beaten some quality teams, but SA? They've beaten perhaps three quality teams. Perhaps they'll pick it up mid-season, but so far IMO, they've been a big letdown.

If the Spurs make it to the playoffs healthy (and they are trying real hard) they are too talented and too deep to not be the second best team in the league. The Mavs and Nuggets are definitely right up their too. I'd say Spurs (very cautiously) then Nuggs, then Mavs.

Quick Q, why no mention of Utah. By the way this isnt just about you but the majority of the fan bases seem to think they have no shot.

well, until we have a western conference champion and a western conference runner up, i guess we won't really know.

but i do know that dallas is #2 in the standings, so it stands to reason that at least up until this point they have been the #2 team in the west.

Well then, I guess it stands to reason (http://www.nba.com/standings/team_record_comparison/conferenceNew_Std_Cnf.html) that the Nuggets are the #2 team in the West.

Or in other words, the standings - especially mid-season standings - are not the best way to evaluate team strength.

from a Jazz perspective I'd have to say its the Nuggets. We finnish 6th seed or above and I'd feel confident we could progress to the 2nd round.

6th seed is the golden ticket (or homecourt ;))

i think people are underestimating the spurs. They are too good to not be second by the end of the year.

Also, like how marvix stops posting once the stats aren't in his favor...

Yeah, keep readin' fella. I already followed up with the correction. Doesn't matter though, DEN has had the lighter schedule. Check the sched. But it doesn't really matter anyways, Playoffs are where it counts. We saw where 2nd in the West got that team last season.

Nope they arent as good as their record alludes, it took a defensive stop from Marion to win a single possession game against the Wiz. Thats not a good sign for the future.

At midway through the season (and before the deadline), I still pretty much have to keep the door open. Dirk, Melo, Duncan, Deron, Roy, CP3, Nash... any of these guys get a good scenario wrapped around them and start beasting intheir own game, who knows what will happen?

I thought Dallas would be an easier matchup for Denver than New Orleans last season, but man did Dirk prove me wrong. Playoff basketball is so different, and the number of talents in the West who have the poetential to rise to the occasion and take over a series is scary.
