My friends and I recently argued over who the best defenders of all time were.. Pippen comes to a lot of our minds. But what about the best at each position. I've given it some thought and came up with my all time defensive team.
1st Team:
PG - Gary Payton :He revolutionized the PG position by locking down pg's & SG's and Even nick-named "The Glove". Gary also shares the record with Jordan for 9 time all NBA Defensive 1st Teams and Ranks 3rd all time in Steals.

SG - Michael Jordan : Given his inability to accept losing and his drive to win, was enough to motivate anyone around him to be lock down defenders (Pippen). in 1988 he not only led the league in points with 35 per game but also with Steals (3.2) that year he was awarded MVP & Defensive player of the year, a feat only he and Olajuwon have accomplished. This dominance on both sides of the floor landed him as the best and most feared defender at the SG position.

SF - Scottie Pippen : Just Watch!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9vFHYVXtRk&feature=sub & Then Watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1YchiFv-5M&feature=related

PF - Dennis Rodman : 2 Time DPOY, 6 Time All Defensive 1st teams, and 7 consecutive time league rebounder. Versatile enough to guard any position on the floor and succeed at it and possibly the league's greatest rebounder in the history of the sport. If ever there were a specialist it was Rodman "Defensive Specialist"

C - Hakeem Olajuwon :Hakeem Olajuwon is the NBA’s All-time leader in blocked shots with 3,830. almost 600 more blocked shots than the second place in total blocks, Dikembe Mutombo. even more amazing is that He is 8th on the NBA’s All-time steals list, with 2,162 steals! Rare for a big man. NO other center even cracks the top 25. in 94 Olajuwon completely Dominated the league winning DPOY MVP & Finals MVP winning his 1st Championship.

Honorable Mentions in no particular order
Bill Russell
Wilt Chamberlain
Dikembe Mutombo
Ben Wallace
John Stockton
Alonzo Mourning
Jason Kidd

You should make a full 15-man team.

Include Dwight somewhere in the backup!

Had to sneak Russell in at PF because that's what he would be if he played today. I prolly forgot a few essential guys...buy hey...

Oh yeah...Payton and Howard are highly overrated defenders.

I would put Duncan at PF over Rodman simply because he could alter shots and was a shot blocker.

Great list. Stockton would get torched by any real PG so I might replace him with a modern player like Wade and go big with him at PG... but other than that very strong.

Dwight Howard would be like 7th string center. He would never see the floor.

SG - Jordan

Love this team I just don't know if I could imagine leaving Scottie Pippen off an all-defensive team.

I'm impressed. Everyone knows the top defensive centers but it's nice to see some vintage picks at guard.

Love Duncan but if Rodman can handle Karl Malone I wouldn't be worried. :D

Why JD over Kidd?

Why JD over Kidd?

Because he is simply a better defender. he was one of the only defenders who could slow Jordan reasonably well straight up...with emphasis on 'reasonably well'.

I totally missed CLYDE! he def deserves to be put somewhere on this list. I just don't think he can take GP or MJ's Spot on my starting 5. He Definitely was the Coolest modafuka to ever wear a Knick uniform.
