After ending a franchise record for futility, the Columbus Blue Jackets hope a visit to the punchless New York Islanders can help them avoid setting another.

The Blue Jackets will try to snap an 11-game road losing streak Tuesday night when they visit the last-place Islanders.

Columbus (14-18-7) ended a team-record nine-game losing streak Monday when Fredrik Modin scored off a rebound of his own shot 3:12 into overtime to clinch a 1-0 win over Detroit, splitting a home-and-home set after falling 2-1 at home on Saturday. The victory was just the Blue Jackets' third in 20 games (3-12-5), and first since a 3-0 win against Florida on Dec. 9.

"It feels good to get a win, finally," Modin said. "It's been a struggle. We've been trying to find our game here for a long period of time. This is definitely a step in the right direction."

The Blue Jackets will now try to carry some of that momentum into Nassau Coliseum, in an effort to halt a franchise record-tying 11-game road losing streak. They last endured a slide that long as visitors when they dropped the last eight of the 2001-02 season and the first three of 2002-03.

Columbus' current struggles have a lot to do with a lack of scoring. The team has scored one goal in each of the last three games, while failing to net more than three for 13 in a row, losing 12.

It hasn't done much better preventing goals, allowing a Western Conference-high 136.

Rick Nash, the team leader with 19 goals and 36 points, is having a tough time finding the net, scoring five goals in the last 20 games while managing just one shot on goal Monday. The All-Star left wing hasn't scored in three games against New York (15-18-7).

The Blue Jackets, though, have enjoyed great success against the Islanders, holding a 7-1-1 advantage with a tie in the all-time series. However, both losses have come at New York, including a 4-3 overtime defeat in their last visit on Nov. 3, 2008.

The Islanders are having their own offensive problems, ranking last in the NHL with 2.4 goals per game. They've been outscored 40-21 while going 4-8-0 over the last 12 contests, getting shut out twice.

New York struggled offensively again Sunday, falling 2-1 at home to Philadelphia. The defeat was the 13th in a row to the Flyers, as the Islanders fell a point back of them into last place in the Atlantic Division.

"You try to just focus on doing what makes your team successful," right wing Trent Hunter told the team's official Web site. "You can't worry about rivalries and records. You just have to worry about the next game and worry about getting the two points."

Rookie John Tavares - the team leader with 16 goals and 28 points - has struggled lately, scoring one goal in his last nine games for his only point in that span.

Dwayne Roloson will likely be back in net after being rested in favor of Martin Biron, who made 28 saves to lose his sixth consecutive start.

Biron is 2-11-2 with a 3.22 goals-against average and a shutout in 17 games - 15 starts.

Roloson, though, has emerged as the Islanders' No. 1 goaltender, winning his last two starts while stopping 62 of 65 shots.

He's 13-7-5 with a 2.83 GAA in 25 games, but has dropped three of his last five games against Columbus, while posting a 2.82 GAA.

i think roloson will start and who the hell knows with the blue jackets these days. i suspect mason even though he played last night. he shut out the wings and supposedly (because of poor goal play in columbus) the goalie that wins gets to start until he loses.

kmo429
12-29-2009, 02:06 PM
^Yeah if they stick to what they said about goalies it will be Mason, who is in possibly the worst sophomore slump ever. And Garon isnt playing particularly well either. And yeah roloson will start, his numbers are kindve tainted, despite a few awful starts he's had a great year.], and his stats aren't even that good, but that happens.....

^that hit rumbled the entire arena. all the fans woke up and started cheering.

that was a bad idea by roy to drop his gloves. sutton is smarter then that... no way is he going to get into a fight with 6 mins left in a 1-1 game.

Also, what's up with Mulsn and Tavares not scoring? I guess the team just can't score but still. I want to see Tambellini on line one wiht Moulson and Tavares, and Nielsen, Okposo, and Hunter on line 2.

tsunami
12-30-2009, 01:40 AM
moulson seems to have hit a wall. plus he also seems to get robbed at least once a night.

i think bergenheim needs to get back soon so they can put moulson, tavares and KO back on the first line.

bergenheim out 1-2 weeks my ***... that was 3 1/2 weeks ago

There us no greater feeling in the world then being called a homer in the nhl forum.

you might be a little overboard with the homerism though.
still i really don't understand all the hate for the islanders in that forum. they seem to think that everyone on that team is a joke.

kmo429
12-30-2009, 01:49 AM
I am overboard with it, but half of it is sarcastic or just to piss people off, so my actual homerism is at the rate of the average poster.

And they (I don't know who they is either) keep saying that Okposo and Nielsen have great chemistry. I do like a line with Bergenheim, Nielen, and Tambellini though.

And yeah, the hate for the Islander is ridiculous. We will show them in a few years.

Season series
These teams haven't seen each other since Oct. 8, when the Islanders overcame a 2-0 deficit but lost 3-2 in overtime at Scotiabank Place on a goal by Mike Fisher. The Senators come to Nassau Coliseum for games on Feb. 14 and April 3.

Big story
The Senators are facing a major challenge as they try to hold on to a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference -- they're playing without their two biggest guns, Jason Spezza (knee surgery) and Daniel Alfredsson (shoulder). Neither is likely to return until after the Olympics. The Islanders are trying to put the wheels back on after struggling through much of December; they've won three of their last four, though they were dominated for most of the game in Tuesday's 2-1 shootout win over Columbus.
Team Scope:

Islanders
After a slow start this season, 40-year-old Dwayne Roloson has established himself as the Isles' No. 1 goaltender. He's 14-7-5 with a 2.75 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage, and was the hero in the Isles' win over Columbus with 41 saves through 65 minutes and three more in the shootout.

With backup Martin Biron struggling, the Islanders need Roloson to bring his "A" game every night. He's done it more often than not.

"I don't think Rollie has had too many off-nights," coach Scott Gordon said after Tuesday night's win. "Since the first month (of the season), he's elevated his game. He played well and gave us a chance to win the game."

Senators
Ottawa is spending New Year's Eve at Scotiabank Place after losing 4-3 to Colorado at home on Wednesday -- despite outshooting the Avalanche 30-20. Pascal Leclaire stopped just 16 of 20 shots and allowed a couple of soft goals.

Coach Cory Clouston preferred to dwell on the good things his team did in the loss.

''All our guys played well, you can't really fault too many guys,'' Clouston said. ''We generated 30 shots, we gave up 20. There's not much more you can do.''

Who's hot
Isles forward Kyle Okposo has 4 points in his team's last three games -- big numbers on a team that's struggled badly in the attacking zone. Ottawa forward Randy Shannon had a pair of goals on Wednesday and has 4 in three games.

Injury report
Isles forward Nate Thompson will miss a week or two with a shoulder injury. Goalie Rick DiPietro, who hasn't played in nearly a year as he recovers from knee surgery, could play an AHL game this week end. Captain Doug Weight is still out with an upper-body injury. Ottawa forward Nick Foligno returned Wednesday and had a goal after missing seven games with a knee injury.

Stat pack
The Senators have dominated the Islanders throughout their history. Ottawa is 38-15-1 with 11 ties against the Isles since entering the NHL in 1992. New York was 3-1-0 against the Senators last season, the first time it had beaten Ottawa three times in a season.

Puck drop
The Isles, who haven't scored more than three goals in a game in more than a month, need a return to form by top rookie John Tavares -- he has just 1 goal and 2 points in his last 10 games and has been struggling. Maybe he'll get a boost by returning to the scene of one of his greatest triumphs -- one year ago at this time, he led Team Canada to the World Junior Championship atScotiabank Place.

I was just saying, he's not going to win it, and e really shouldn't, but I was just exaggerating how good he has been for us this year.

tsunami

5 points total in these 3 games. not too bad.

kmo429
01-02-2010, 11:32 PM
Good game but we really need to learn how to eep leads, Rolie was off his game and we got lucky that we have such good players for the shootout. % of 6 is good, better than i expected, 3 straight shootout games, hey if we get to a shootout every game we'll win like 2/3 of our games, Schremp is almost automatic, he just missed the net tonight, and Nielsen, Tambellini and Tavares are good too.

^more free chili for you!

and ever since you became psd's jon sim he's been great.
but gervais is still a loser.

kmo429
01-02-2010, 11:48 PM
haha oh yeah Sim is actually playing well lately, that was a BS diving call though

I just don't understand, if there was a trip, and it was called a penalty, then shouldn't the player have the right to sell it?

that's the un-sportsman part right their

kmo429
01-03-2010, 12:09 AM
Yeah kindve, but it is stupid that a ref can say he tripped that guy. yet that guy dove. It just doesn't work that way. It should be one or the other imo.

tsunami
01-03-2010, 12:15 AM
no i like it as both. there was both a trip and an unsportsman like issue.

i have more of an issue when a player is taken down and nothing is called either way. either there was a penalty (such as tripping) or the player was trying to draw a penalty and stopped skating. to me that's more annoying when the ref just looks the other way.

kmo429
01-03-2010, 12:18 AM
Well either way, it looked like a bad call live and on 1st replay.

Good game and good last 3 games... 5 of 6 points not bad... but damn, went through a whole bottle of Tums in those 3 games... 3 shootouts in a row! HA! Should be used to all these nail biters, even when we start with a nice lead in games, being a Jets and Mets fan... my poor heart! Well, as they say, whatever doesn't kill you makes you strong! LOL

tsunami
01-03-2010, 01:42 PM
