The Mariners have initiated long-term contract discussions with right-hander Felix Hernandez, but the two sides are far apart, according to a major-league source.

Hernandez, 23, is two years away from free agency. He is happy in Seattle, the source said, but willing to continue going year-to-year in arbitration and then seek a CC Sabathia-type contract on the open market.

Sabathia signed a seven-year, $161 deal with the Yankees last winter. The average annual value of that contract is $23 million.

The Mariners are believed to have offered Hernandez a four-year contract in the $45 million range. Such a deal would cover his final two years of arbitration and first two years of free agency.

Hernandez earned $3.8 million last season and finished second in the American League Cy Young Award balloting. His salaries in arbitration could rise to $7 million next season and then $10 million in 2011.

Add two free-agent years at $23 million, and his goal in a four-year deal likely would be above $60 million. He also could seek a longer term — say, six years — and a total package of more than $100 million. -- Ken Rosenthalhttp://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/10357594

i'm hearing king #felix will likely seek about $100 mil over 6 years in talks with #mariners. if u ask me, hes worth it.http://twitter.com/SI_JonHeyman

I don't care what it costs. Get him locked up.

My hats off to the Mariners for trying. Sign Bay to prove that you are committed to improving the team and then up the number to 4 years $60-80 mil. That should be sufficient to lock him up.

that won't lock him up... King Felix knows how good he is and how much $$ he will command in the open market. I feel to sign someone like him (who is 23 and a stud), you need at least 100M

It doesn't make too much sense for him to sign a 4 year contract, which would make him eligible for F/A tqo years later than he could be right now.

I think he would only sign a 2 year contract or a very long contract that goes for 6-8 years & makes it worth him bypassing F/A.

6/105M sounds fair for him.

Yes it does, because he'll still be young enough to get a huge FA contract, and this way he gets guranteed money.

nooooooo i want him to be an Angel.

if i where him i would want 6 years 120M+

then he would be 29 when he was a free agent again and he could get another contract simular to that one ^^

Sounds a lot like what I said. If you check Rosenthal's article a source mentions:

Hernandez, 23, is two years away from free agency. He is happy in Seattle, the source said, but willing to continue going year-to-year in arbitration and then seek a CC Sabathia-type contract on the open market.

The 4/60 deal sounds pretty reasonable from the M's side and around what someone suggested (52/4) earlier in the thread. But like I said earlier, Felix is no dummy, and is well aware that he can get the CC contract in 2 years.

I could see a 100/6 or 120/7 type deal for Felix - I realize that's a long time and a significant amount of $$ for any one pitcher, but I don't see Felix signing a 4/60 deal. I'd love to be wrong, but I don't see it happening. And if the source in Rosenthal's article is correct, than Felix won't sign unless he gets a pretty big deal from the M's.

The 120/7 deal could look something like 12/14/16/18/20/20/20. That'd be a hometown discount of sorts, seeing as he could realistically do 10/12 in arb before getting 23/7 in FA.

Deep down,I just have a feeling he won't be a Mariner. Probably just being a fan and the nerves.

The great young players lie in bed and salivate when they fantasize about their free agency. All the attention, the money. Mariners fans, enjoy him while you can.

If he goes anywhere besides the Mariners, the Yankees is the first team that I do not want him to go to.

6 years 100?!?!?!?! Do it do it do it do it. He could make more than that IMO especially with the market really only going up. Lock Felix up and then worry about the rest...

While it would be good for baseball if he signed with Seattle long-term, as a Red Sox fan it would be such a pleasure to see him pitching for Boston.
