Portland center Greg Oden will likely miss the season after fracturing his left knee cap during a game against Houston on Saturday night.

Oden will undergo surgery, the Trail Blazers said.

The 7-foot center dropped to the floor clutching his left knee and grimacing after colliding with a driving Aaron Brooks midway through the first quarter.

He was almost immediately surrounded by trainers and physicians. The crowd at the Rose Garden stood and chanted “Oden! Oden!”

The game was stopped for some 7 minutes. Finally, Oden was gently moved to a stretcher and wheeled from the court. He underwent an MRI shortly thereafter.

Oden, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft out of Ohio State, has been plagued by injures for his entire NBA career.

The 7-footer missed rookie season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee. Last season, Oden sat out six games after injuring his right foot in the season opener against the Lakers, then missed 14 games after the All-Star break with a bone chip in his left knee. He finished the season averaging 8.9 points and 7 rebounds.

Oden lost weight during the offseason and was averaging 11.7 points and 8.8 rebounds this season as a starter.

The Blazers have been beset by injuries. Starting forward Nicolas Batum needed shoulder surgery just before the opener. Fellow forward Travis Outlaw fractured his foot in mid-November and required surgery.

Forward Rudy Fernandez was out of Saturday night’s game with sciatic pain and set to undergo an MRI. It was uncertain if he would be with the team on an upcoming four-game road trip starting with the Knicks on Monday.

Even coach Nate McMillan was set to undergo surgery Monday after rupturing his right Achilles’ tendon during practice.

The coach was participating in practice because the team is so short-handed. He will miss the team’s upcoming road trip, replaced by assistant coach Dean Demopoulos.

Oden looks like he's 40, and his body is acting like it.

Blazers just took a huge hit in a season where they were supposed to be darkhorse favorites in the West.

i think Portland should trade him- he's not good when he's not in uniform.

Oden has been such a high risk from the get go- as a once in a life-time center type of player-

usually a player with lofty expectations fall hard, really hard.

let another team take the risk of him getting injured again.

Man I would be pissed off if I was a T-Blaze fan. You gotta feel for Oden, missing a lot of time his first 3 seasons just when he was coming on to the scene. I guess he really is injury-prone and can't stay out on the court.

You really can't trade a guy when he's hurt.......if they want to deal him they'll have to wait until he can get medical clearance........which could be a while

To be honest, I've never been high on Oden. But he seems like a really nice kid and his recent stat lines would suggest that he was really start to come around. I feel really bad for the guy.

I also feel bad for Oden. He seems to be a hard worker on and off the court from what I've read, and he seems like a good person who talented though he is, has had a lot of trouble reaching his potential. As a fan of the game its too bad to see a player with this much talent and potential have their career derailed by injuries. It happened to Bill Walton and Ralph Sampson, lets just hope Oden bounces back from this.

he's a bust. simple as that. he's the modern day Grant Hill. cant stay healthy for ****. and what sucks is it's his left knee this time and it was his right knee rookie year. the guy will never be the same. at best, let him do 15-20 min off the bench when he comes back. he's not athletic enough to run 30-35 min in a game. especially now when he has 2 bum knees. what a shame. don't take a chance and bring him back full time or mark my words the next knee injury may be the career ender. he's just not a conditioned athlete.

I don't think that anyone needs or should bash him. I felt Portland made a mistake by not getting Durant but not because I thought Oden would be injured like he has been. If any one should be bashed it should be Portland. Teams fall in love with size to much and if the guy isn't proven it usually backfires.

hes already a bust nearly 2 full missed seasons. hes gonna end up being one of those tough luck guys that no matter how good his talent is, oden will just end up being one of the best centers that never were. would've could've should've but wasn't.

Lets not act like the guy was breaking out this year and this stopped that, he was averaging 11/9/2 which are barely above what Erick Dampier averages. He was playing quality basketball this year but its not like he was blossoming into Tim Duncan or anything.

Too bad for him though, hate to see a player have the constant injury bug he has.

he was doing it in 25 minutes a game while being dominant defensively, leading the league in block percentage and shooting over 60% from the floor. He was, by all accounts, having an excellent season.

I don't think that's the season down the toilet for you guys. You still have a really solid center in Joel Przybilla and a pretty good line-up. I know you have a lot of injuries, but it's better to have them early than late in the season, everyone has them at some point.

This sucks for Greg Oden, who seems like a really cool guy. Hopefully he can come back strong next season.

its really too bad. Oden is a good kid. And has been killed by various injuries. And when you are 21, and that tall, and have a history of injuries, the chances are, you turn into Sam Bowie. Sorry Portland, it sucks. You took the right guy at the time in the draft, but it is looking more and more like Oden will be an injury plagued center, and be a completely nondependable big man. I hope I am wrong, I really do. But at his age, and his history, its not adding up

I was thinking the same thing in terms of comparing Oden's situation to Sam Bowie. The Portland franchise has had some major set backs in terms of drafting centers.

Sucks.

Been reading the majority of the posts here and pretty much everyone agrees that he was finally coming around and people were starting to really believe in him.

As for bust status? I'm one of the people who doesn't believe that injury condones bust status. Unfortunate though.

All this seems horribly unfair to Oden, a gentle giant who, as general manager Kevin Pritchard somberly noted afterward, had worked so hard to come back from his first knee injury. Oden felt bad enough that Brandon Roy said, "He looked at me and he was like, 'Sorry,' and put his head down." He also was asking for score updates while being carted off for his MRI.

In a roundabout way, it's unfair to Pritchard too. I know what you’re all thinking, so before we go any further: All you second-guessers out there, just stop it. All 30 NBA general managers were prepared to take Greg Oden over Kevin Durant. All of them. There wasn't even any question about it. One can fairly ask whether this consensus was borne more of the hope that infects every personnel evaluator upon seeing a talented 7-footer than of common sense. That said, it's hard to single out a front office for doing what everybody else would have done too. Hollinger (http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/11262/not-again-oden-out-for-year)

-------------------

^I recommend reading the whole thing, btw. It's a good examination of where this leaves the Blazers at now.
