The Twins realize it needs to happen soon. They've been in contact with Mauer's agent, Ron Shapiro, and there are indications the team hopes to have a new deal with Mauer by Christmas.http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/71660717.html?page=1&c=y

Mauer belongs in Minn. I hope they work something out that they can afford, but that rewards him for his high level of play.

Pay him 20 mil at least he is more than worth it!

No body is worth more than 20 million, no one.

That being said, i hope he gets all the money he can, and continues his outstanding play.

He was worth 36 Million this year and 26 the year before.

If theres anyone worth more than 20 Million its Joe Mauer.

6 for 125sounds about right for arguably the most valuable player in the league

Completely agreed. It'd be great to see him play his career in Minny.
Now with that said...
I would give my left nut for him to be on the Sox.

As great as he is, a 5 or 6 year contract to a catcher would scare me, but I guess it's a risk that the Twins have to take

He could always DH in the AL.

Hell yea I want him. But it still gets annoying you cant go two post in the Sox forum without the mentioning of Mauer and/or Hanley. Two very unrealistic options at this point, and its talked about more then Holliday. We all like to dream, but sometimes it gets old

Some markets need "excitment" every off season to retain fans. :)

The Twins will sign Mauer. It will cost them more to NOT sign him than it will to dish out 18-20M per year TO keep him. A deal will get done.

If he signs for 5/100, he will be leaving upwards of 50M on the table.

He would be leaving some money on the table, yes.

Can any other MLB player say that his grandparents have watched every game of his since high school?

Sentimental value, my friend, sentimental value. If your not a sentimental person and its all about the $ for you, I guarantee you won't understand it.

I think he could get 8/200 as a FA with the Yanks and Sawx bidding.

20 mill a year goes farther in Minneapolis than 25 a year in NYC.

I don't know about that, you don't spend it all at once. But I know what you mean.

.....considering he already has a home in St. Paul.....it's definitely true.

I don't think that part of it matters, but the rest is hard to deny.

$5 million difference per year for 6 years? I couldn't even spend $30million if I tried! Well maybe, but that's alot of hookers!

Haha thats a good one  I bet you a guy like Mauer probably wont spend more than 2M a year. Seems like a humble guy, doubt he has one of the those 20,000 sqft homes with 8 cars. If its not all about money for him he will stay where he is comfortable.

SB75

^^^^ Agreed...... But he dose have to think about his children and children's children and so fourth, just his family for generations to come. If the money is their to provide for Mauer's generations from now I would have to think he will think about it. Hometown discount very likely, taking a contract for half his worth not likely. His agent will be sure to let him know what he's worth, his contract will far exceed 100 million.

Any which way he is going to be a very wealthy man.....hope it's in Minny.

Joe said that the only thing he's ever actually spent a lot of money is a ranch on a lake about 1 hour north of the Twin Cities. And it's basically just for his friends and family to use.

I honestly hope he does. I like the Twins to an extent, and Mauer is def one of my fav players. It would be nice to see a player stay where he came up every once in awhile

Good
I really hope the Twins keep him.
Pay him what he want.
He is the face of the Franchise.

Also their should be no excuse for this not to be done. I think the Twins owner is the richest in baseball. So I don't want to hear any excuses from him.

Please get it done. Mauer belongs in Minnesota

EDIT-

Several Minnesotans are sprinkled throughout the newest Forbes magazine list of the world's richest people -- and one of them is Carl Pohlad, the wealthiest among Major League Baseball's team owners.

After that it's Pohlad (358th, $3.1 billion), whose pockets are the deepest of any team owner in baseball.

Yeah, but Carl Pohlad is dead.

It's up to his kids to spend what they see fit.

God I just talked to my friend about this and he thinks that if A-rod deserved 10 years at $275 mil, then Mauer deserves something like 10 years for $300 mil. You guys think a contract of that size is possible? Personally I think Mauer should sign something like 6 years for $110 mil but I dunno what will happen.

Pohlad is dead.

I don't care how much money you have, you didn't become a rich person spending more money than you make.... The same concept applies to this team.

Mauer won't get a 10 year contract. The Twins would never hand out a contract longer than 5...or...6 years. We wouldn't be able to compete should that player suffer a career ending injury. The Yankees can absorb something like that but not the Twins.

Highly doubt that we don't see Mauer in a Twins uniform next year. It's simply due to the fact that he seems to love it their and hes a hometown kid.

I agree that no one is worth 20 million a year! Although the way the business of the game is these days thats what it may take. I honestly do believe the Mauer and the Twins will agree on a deal this winter without much trouble. Both Mauer and his agent should be fairly easy to negotiate with.
