View Full Version : Rumor: Okafor to Sac Town

A source with knowledge of the situation says the Kings are discussing a trade with New Orleans that would send Kenny Thomas to the Hornets and bring center Emeka Okafor to Sacramento.

The deal would be ideal for the Hornets, as Thomas' expiring contract worth $8.7 million is just the kind of contract that would trim their enormous payroll. The question, of course, is whether the Kings see Okafor as a big man solution worth the five years and approximately $62 million left on his deal.

The 6-foot-10, 255-pound center who was the second pick of the 2004 draft out of Connecticut has averaged nearly a double-double (10.9 points, 9.2 rebounds) in his six-season career. He spent his first four seasons in Charlotte before being traded to New Orleans in late July for Tyson Chandler.

No deal is imminent and this is merely a discussion between the two sides at this point. - Sam Amick

Woah..
Are the Hornets trying to rebuild??????
I honestly could see Chris Paul like demanding a trade or something sooon. haha
Anyone know when he becomes a FA?

arkanian215
11-14-2009, 05:05 PM
he has an option for 2012-13. he'll most likely opt out like every other star.
so summer of 2012 would be the best bet.

^^^^not until 2012 I think. not sure

This move pretty much shows how much N.O. wants to give CP3 a team

maybe the owner lost more money. originally charlotte dumped okafor to save money. now new orleans looks to be doing the same thing. it might be that management just doesnt have enough money. they're 15.5 mil over the cap. not sure how luxury tax is computed but yeah looks like their owners are broke.

Kings won't be getting any big names in Free Agency so might as well get something done via trade. This would push Hawes to the bench which is where he's better suited anyway.

Okafor at PF and Thompson off bench plus you could put in Okafor at C and Thompson at PF.

Sac is doing great so far this season, it would be cool to see how the Kings would fare with Okafor on the roster.

Okafor at Center
Thompson at PF

JT has recorded a double double in 6/7 consecutive games. He's a double double machine. Hawes would most likely come off the bench

This is only a good move if we dump Mo Pete Posey or Peja in it.

Its rebuilding time.

Suprised no one brought this up yet, but the possibility of this trade demonstrates the degree of CP3's injury. It might just be possible that he will be out (or not near 100%) for an extended period and the Hornets are chalking this season up as a failure. Hopefully CP3 isnt hurt too bad, but this might mean that the team is going to try to bring in a FA in 2010 to help Chris Paul.

Maybe the Hornets are dumping a big contract to go after a free agent in the off season.

As A Kings fan I would welcome this move even with Emekas contract.

Thompson needs to start, he's too good not to. It would be JT at the 4 and Okafor at the 5.

Okafor has a horrible contract and the Hornets aren't that good. it would be a good move for NO in the long run..

Feel bad for the Hornets and their fans. The owner is supposedly losing tons of money just keeping that team afloat. It's hard to rebuild when they have no great talents to give up besides West and Paul, and when the team has no money. Let's also face the truth, no superstars in 2010 would likely want to sign in New Orleans, even if they were given a 5 million more on their deal. LBJ, Wade, Bosh, etc. are gonna want to sign with big, rich city team.. i.e. NYC, LA, Chicago, etc., just so they can build up their public image and score some more cash. Sad truth is that this team could probably end up moving... who knows maybe back to Seattle? Or a team in Vegas, I have no idea.

I can see the Cavs trying for him for Ilgauskas if they really want an expiring.

Oakafor would compliment Hawes game very well imo.

Guess NO is going to give up on the season.

Yeah man I know, I meant bringing a team back to Seattle, cause of some rumors going around saying how they may get a team back there. Vegas should get looked at, San Diego, I dunno. Really wish some filthy rich guy who doesn't care about money would buy the Hornets, I'd like to see them stay there. If not bringing a the Sonics back would be sweet too.

There are some better players coming of the books this off season than Kenny Thomas. New Orleans should at least ask around. Some teams should be interested in Emeka Okafor even though he has that ridiculous contract.

Last time I checked they didn't contact Paul before they fired Byron Scott.
They informed him after they fired him.

You could see the frustration in Paul's eyes this season.

Not unless he starts going on the court giving no effort at all and claiming he is injured when he could play if he wanted too. I can't see Paul doing that, so no VC comparison I don't think.

ZebraCity916

Kings kinda do need him. We're kinda soft down low right now and we need a big. Okafor would be perfect. Hawes is better coming off the bench anyways.

I feel bad for Emeka, hes a high character guy but no team really has a need for him considering his salary. Hes playing in the wrong era, his game and size wouldve been better suited for the 90's early 00's.

I agree with you.

He's such a good humble guy. A good double double guy but his style of play is a dying breed. Almost becoming obsolete in the nba.

PS how would Kings fan feel about Peja coming back?

I'd rather have his contract than Noc's and Beno's.

Kakaroach
11-15-2009, 01:56 AM
Yeah, the Hornets suck. Okafor hasn't been too good, but you can't just give up a shot at the playoffs, especially when CP3 is a free agent in a few years. Especially for Kenny Thomas lol.

Oh yeah thaaattt Kenny Thomas. I thought we were talking about the guy thats like 6'7 and plays PF. But would you like Okafor on the Kings Derek?

Well...I'm worried about that contract. But let's be honest, the Kings won't be getting anyone big in the 2010 free agency. The biggest free agent we've ever gotten was Vlade Divac, who at the time was considered an average Center. Nobody saw him and C-Webb becoming such an awesome duo...except Geoff Petrie. The 2nd biggest FA signing was Bobby Jackson. If all we have to do is give up Kenny Thomas then I'd be tempted to do it. A trio of Thompson/Okafor/Hawes is pretty damn good, especially with the way Jason Thompson is playing right now. The last 5 games he's been a 20/10 guy with passing and ball handling ability (remind you of anyone?). The Kings could use a guy like Okafor that could shore up the middle for sure. But he still has 5 years over $50 million remaining on that contract and hasn't improved since he was drafted.

Basically, I'm on the fence about it.

Kakaroach
11-15-2009, 02:24 AM
Onnn the fence, hmmm. Yeah, I would be too, his contract is nasty but he could be a player that contributes fairly well to that team. Guess its all up to the Kings FO.
