View Full Version : Lebron James: Changing his # to #6

ARMIN12NBA
11-13-2009, 02:52 AM
Lebron James said in the post-game interview that he will change his number to the #6 because Michael Jordan paved the way for all the great NBA players and nobody should ever be allowed to wear his number (#23). Also, when asked about which jersey he will be wearing with the new number, Lebron said with a grin on his face, "We'll see."

Will be a bit weird to be honest, it's like when Nate changed from 4 to 2. Takes a while to get use to seeing.

Interesting. He picked 23 at first to honor Mike, his hero. Now he is going to "Pick 6" in hopes that the league will retire the number 23 for all teams. Nice gesture.

I wonder if there is some other way for the league to honor Mike?

J4KOP99

It's his Olympic number...

Yeah, but they could only choose their olympic numbers from a short list. Isn't it 1-12 or however many players on the roster?

I thought he would do something other than that. Poor reasoning LeBron, poor reasoning.

I still think 25, better than MJ and Kobe. Let the debates begin!

They could put him on the NBA logo along with Jerry West. I doubt people would let that happen though.

Didn't they originally use Jerry West anonymously as the logo? It wasn't until a little later that it was publicly revealed that it was Jerry West's silhouette?

And you're right. I for one, would not want to see the Air Jordan logo replace Jerry West. It's a generational thing, though. I'm sure plenty of current fans and youth wouldn't mind seeing the Jordan logo as the NBA logo.

That depends on whether or not he intended to stay with Cleveland. If he's leaving the team, though, it's a moot point. LeBron fans and fans of the new team would buy new jerseys anyway.

I'm not exactly sure when they announced who the Logo actually was but it does resemble him pretty well.

And I agree, keep it the way it is, no need to change it now. Maybe they could name an award after Jordan like they did Bill Russell.

Speaking of Bill Russell, I always thought he deserved to be in the Logo. Him jumping up to block a shot, and Jerry West, either in his current position, or actually shooting. West and Russell, Lakers and Celts. That would have been nice. But don't change the Logo now.

LInk please?

Hmm he changes his number right after playing the team who hes speculated of possibly signing with in 2010 who just "coincidently" enough is the only organization to retire the number #23 besides the bulls. A little too much of a coincidence...

Funny thing was during the game when they showed both Scottie and JOrdan at the game they mentioned how much of a "coincidence" it was that those two were there to watch 2 players who could possibly form a best in the league sg-sf combination and now this happens!

Also when they showed Jordans jersey in the rafters i thought oh man my Lebron to Miami dream is more doubtful now because i cant imagine Lebron not playing as #23 and couldnt think of what number he'd pick. Guess i got my question answer and my hope for it is now stronger than ever!

Its pretty simple

Toney Douglas (knicks rookie guard) has been ballin' these past couple games. James knows Douglas will be the best player in the league by the end of the year so any attempt to take number 23 from Douglas next year will be a futile.

I think people are missing the point.

MJ is an icon and he had a huge hand in making the game what it is today. He is the best ever and will probably even be known as such.

The only challenger to that throne right now is LeBron. I personally do not think he will get there but if he were to do so with another number. As long as people say #23, MJ would be most fans first thought.

But if he seriously wants to do it to honor the great, i think its an ultimate show of class and i think MJ is worthy of that honor.

Retiring a single number league wide for one player is foolish. Now, every kid who grows up with dreams of the NBA and their favorite number is 23 has to pick something else because of some guy they never even saw play. Retiring it for the Bulls is enough; league wide is nonsense.

NO. Lebron saw that miami already retired 23 to honor the greatest MJ. So since he wants to join the heat next year, it's a signal from him to Mr. Riley that he doesn't mind to take another #....He is not gonna force Riley to give him 23. lol.. (makes sense tho)

I respect Lebron for his opinion, but the NBA doesn't owe Michael Jordan anything. For a man so highly "respected" and accomplished;his HOF Speech made him sound like a very bitter, angry and un-grateful human being. Jordan is not some god, he's a man who really knew how to play the game of basketball, it's also a well known fact that he is one of the biggest a-holes in the history of the game too. In closing, I'm not feeling your petition Lebron. Jordan is just a man, period, and starting a drive so that no-one wears #23 is a bit much, in my humble opinion.

Everyone knows who he is, he changed the game forever and this wouldn't be that much of a problem. I doubt anyone who is already wearing 23 would have a problem with it.

When we are talking about the pure effect that Gretzky and Jordan had on their respective games, they are the greatest. People can argue guys like Lemuiex, Howe or Orr against Gretzky, but nobody changed the game the way he did. He made it hugely popular outside of Canada and is a worldwide known name. Same with Jordan. There will always be the Magic Johnsons, Birds, Russell's and so on, but nobody brought the NBA to the place where MJ brought it.

I can assure you as someone who has watched basketball since the 80's, that the NBA was a hell of a lot more exciting in the 80's than ANY year during Michael's title runs in the 90's. Even the 2000's and right now is a better time in the NBA than the 90's.

He was the one Kobe, Lebron, DWade, of the mid 90's when there simply wasn't anyone else as talented or popular as he was. In no way should his number get a retirement league wide for that.

MAYBE, the only reason why he decided to change his number is because when Miami retired the number yesterday, he got intimidated.

ooo Lebron is such a hero....********...no one should be wearing his number period. It only took LeBron how long to realize this? Why does every other player in the league that wears 23 SUCK? At least LeBron is a good player, but what the hell are those other players thinking by wearing his number???

I hope he ends up playing for the Nets and never wins more than 30 games a season....he is a douche. I would have respect for him if he took a pay cut to play for a contender, but it seems like he just wants to spot light (AS IF HE DOESNT ALREADY HAVE ENOUGH). I hope he breaks his legs

If LeBron had this huge respect for the league and it's history, he wouldn't switch from 23 to Bill Russells #6. Russell is the most defensively dominant, most winning player of all time.

I don't care if he changes the number, but he looks like an idiot switching to Russells #6 on the grounds of having so much respect for NBA history.

Any player outside of Chicago should be able to wear #23.

I like the move. Showing respect to the greatest ever. One of the reasons why I don't buy jerseys lol.

yeah this is wack imo and is probably one of the reasons why the NBA hasn't recovered since MJ retired.........they make the man bigger than the league......yes MJ was great, but so were the many players that came before and after him.........if the league retires the number it would be a joke.........

So is the MLB wrong to retire Jackie's?

Tell that to Jackie Robinson and The Great One! Two of the most important players ever in their respective sports.

It isn't foolish at all in my opinion and is the ultimate honor. Even in amature leagues where the number is not retired, athletes still know you don't wear those numbers. It's hallowed lore.

jackie is another story......broke the color barrier.....opened many doors for all African American athletes

Even the 2000's and right now is a better time in the NBA than the 90's

we have great talent now, but Jordan, Hakeem, Barkley, Malone, Shaq, Ewing, Robinson, Drexler, Dominique, etc might have something to say about that lol.....there are definitely some all time greats in the game today, but the big men were so much better in the 90s.....

Douche about sums it up:

Ammending your statement that "money isn't important" with "i didn't say i wouldn't get a max contract" = douche.
Changing your number out of "respect to mj" but telling the media " if I can't wear #23, no one should be able to" = douche.
Saying you're "done with the 2010 talk" out of "respect for your team" the day after your first and last game at MSG = douche.

This kid was built up and hyped so much as a basketball god... it's obvious he believes it now. Are there any humble athletes left in this game?

Michael did a lot for the NBA and even more for Chicago. I agree that the older guys were great...but they don't put on the shows like the stars do today.

LeBron is just a kid. He is still learning (as did Kobe) what to say and not to say. But when you put up the numbers like LeBron does than I think he has the right to start a petition to have all players cease to wear #23. JRich in PHX says he totally agrees. Damn...it's just a number. It's not like they are changing it to the MJBA.

He should pick 999. No reason. I just like high numbers.

Are you high right now? :eyebrow:
