Nellie: Warriors still open to trading Jackson

Posted Nov 9 2009 10:47PM

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Golden State coach Don Nelson said the Warriors are still open to trading Stephen Jackson a day after the disgruntled star's agent made disparaging comments about the coach.

"We're trying to accommodate him," Nelson said. "If we can get a good deal, we'll do it. I said that over a month, month and a half ago."

In an interview late Sunday with ESPN Jackson's agent, Mark Stevens, blamed Nelson for breaking up the Warriors' playoff team from 2007 and questioned his ability to coach.

"I'm disgusted with the quality of Nelson's coaching and with the lack of trust his players have in him," Stevens said. "Nelson is the winningest coach in NBA history to never have coached in the NBA Finals, let alone won a championship. Yet he keeps getting jobs despite being 69 years old."

Stevens reiterated his comments Monday on ESPNRadio.

Nelson declined to discuss Stevens' comments when asked about them before Monday night's home game against Minnesota.

"I don't have any comment, you guys know what that's all about," Nelson said.

Jackson has been upset with the Warriors' decline since he helped the franchise end a 13-year postseason drought with a trip to the second round of the playoffs in 2007. He agreed to a three-year, $28 million contract extension last November but publicly requested a trade this past offseason.

Jackson relinquished his role as team captain after being suspended for two preseason games when he and Nelson got into a heated exchange during an exhibition game against the Los Angeles Lakers in October. The suspension cost Jackson approximately $139,000, and since then the tension between he and the Warriors has grown.

The Warriors lost four of their first five games this season, including Sunday's 120-107 loss to the Sacramento Kings. Stevens told ESPN he watched the game against Sacramento and is determined to get Jackson traded.

"I just want him out of there now," Stevens said. "It doesn't matter where. At this stage, something has to be done. It can't get any worse.

"No one trusts Don Nelson. When Nelson was in Milwaukee, Wayne Embry trusted him and brought him in, and he betrayed Embry. In Dallas, Mark Cuban took damn good care of him and his son and he betrayed Cuban. In Golden State, Chris Mullin hired him and trusted him and Nelson backstabbed him by reaching out to president Robert Rowell and blaming Mullin for everything that was going wrong with the Warriors."

I hope Denver gets the opportunity. Does Denver still have a trade exception, they would need to get a third team involved.

In fact, most of the NW division, Utah and Portland, could use Jackson.

I don't know-but I really wonder if the Warriors will just take any decent deal(despite what is being publicly stated) simply to make everyone shut up and have the situation die down. This will just keep getting uglier otherwise. Maybe that Big Z trade for Jackson will happen for the Cavs.

He's not going anywhere. His new job: PG only for the Warriors.

I doubt a team would want him after the way he has carried himself, not to mention getting a contract extension when teams are buckling down on spending isn;t a good thing now.

Could dump him on teh Knicks for a ton of expirings? I just dont see that many teams that match up good for a trade. Denver isnt going to happen straight up, Miami dont see what would make that deal work. I just dont see a team that has much to offer besides expirings for the guy.

I say he stays with the team unless something crazy happens.

send him to the Clippers for Al Thornton or Rasual Butler

If we can find a way for us to give up Eddy Curry and Jared Jeffries for him, I'd do it.

I hope not the Heat. We've got other plans.

Its not gonna happen bro, no team in their right mind would trade for that contract.

Isiah is pretty much the only guy who was that stupid. The Sixers would gladly offer Dalembert I think.

more than Isiah.the guy generated good deal of interest this off season(spurs, den, cats, cavs),and are willing to even now.teams do get desperate(and thus stupid)

and yes the sixers would, but the warrors wouldnt take it.all 29 other teams(this means they called the warriors and they declined)

As a sixer fan im hoping the sixers offer brand and other players for jackson and other players...

Golden state offered brand the most money when he was a fa... their interest most likely isnt as strong as it was before (due to brand under producting) but maybe theres still some there... sixers cud use a scorer like jackson tho...

A dream trade for me tho wud be biendrins and jackson for brand and smith although I doubt GS wud do it

Your throwing out alot of noise but no clear facts, who and what were their offers is what matters. The Cavs will not trade Big Z for Jacko I can assure you of that, unless there some sort of wink wink deal where Z can resign after 30 days but even then I really doubt thats going to happen because hes that bad of an investment.

Its simple, if any team wanted him badly enough they wouldve had him by now. Its not like GS is asking for anything beyond an expiring contract, teams just arent willing. Thats called negative trade value.

Den? They are already pushing the tax with their starting 5 alone, I can assure you they arent looking to load up unless its for a player that puts them over the top even then, ask Den if he thinks his team is high on Jacko. They got a stat savvy crew, they know how hollow Jacko's stats are.

Cats. Yea Diop or Nazr for sure, trading an albatross for a less talented albatross helps the Warriors how?

Cavs, theyd probably want Turiaf more than Jacko

LOL Thanks for proving my point, considering the worst contract in the league belongs to Brand. Seriously that signing was a mistake.

Well had brand returned to his 20-10 form it wouldn't have been bad but now brand looks to be far from that as well as speights looking better with each passing game, i'd rather have him starting than brand but if that point is reached we'll never be able to trade him.

but ya two of the worst contracts in the league are on the sixers... dalembert and brand... :sigh:
