Adam Jones reportedly has won the Gold Glove for his work manning centerfield in Baltimore.
The official announcement isn't due for another week or so, but Jones' brother broke the news... on MySpace. Take it with a grain of salt, but if true, he would win it over the more deserving Franklin Gutierrez of Seattle. Jones' UZR fielding rating places him 12th among all centerfielders despite repeated reports of fantastic defense. Gutierrez is first, and it's not even close.

So you're posting that someone may or may not have undeservedly won an award?

Awesome.

If he did win it, he didn't necessarily win it "over" Gutierrez. Someone needs to tell the writer that three outfielders (regardless of corner or center) get gold gloves. Who is to say Guti didn't get one of the other two...

Well, I think Torii Hunter and Ichiro just get theirs by default every year, so yeah....if Jones did win it, he damn sure won't be taking it away from those two guys.

C'mon guys it's the Gold Gloves, you can't expect them to actually pick guys who are good at fielding. I'd be more worried if they got it right and picked Gutierrez. I'm expecting Betancourt to get the one @ SS and Vernon Wells to pick up another one.

Your On Notice board (http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/255185/november-05-2009/on-notice-dead-to-me---canadian-iceholes) seems to be a bit out of date.

That was a funny clip. But my On Notice board is one that I generated.

If Gutierrez doesn't win the GG it'll be the worst call in any pro sports voting. I'm not even being a homer either.

Yeah, I figured. I couldn't recall him ever talking about sabermetrics before.

Gold Glove voting is so terrible. What a sham.

Meh, who cares? anyone who follows baseball closely knows that gold gloves are usually complete bull **** and they aren't usually given to the player who actually deserves it. It's more about your hilite reel and what's even worse is they tend to vote for players based on how well they did offensively which has nothing to do with the award(obviously).

I know you can't expect it, but I hate seeing this crap. What it means is that my GM Jim Hendry will eventually think player-X is good at defense (aka, rumors the Cubs may trade for Vernon Wells, who, infact, sucks at life) due to the number of gold gloves he owns. GM's seem to think gold gloves automatically equal defense.

Thus, I worry every time this season.

you cant take it that seriously dude...I mean Jeter has 3 gold gloves and he is pretty brutal defensively. A gold glove is a consellation prize for the best player at the position who didnt win anything else.

Gutierrez probably wont win a gold glove because he isnt an established star. I'm shocked Jones is getting one if he is because I figured it would be Hunter, Ichiro, and Crawford or something like that like it always is. I doubt Jones is gonna get it.

If Gutierrez doesnt/didnt win a fielding bible award that would be a crime. The gold glove he wont win.

Jones has more assists, less errors, a higher fielding percentage and a higher range factor then Gutierrez. But its ok, Gutierrez is the better fielder.

Gutierrez had a 29.1 UZR and Jones had a -4.7. Gonna go out on a limb and say Gutierrez was more than slightly better than Jones.

There's a lot of fail in this post.

First of all, there's no context given for assists. While assists totals generally are somewhat indicative of a player's ability to throw out runners attempting to take an extra base, they don't actually tell us how many opportunities the player had. Let's say that Player A has 10 assists and Player B has 7 assists. Player A made those 10 assists in 20 attempts, or 50%. Player B made those 7 assists in 11 attempts, or 64%. Would you still say that Player A is more effective at throwing out runners?

Errors are completely and totally subjective measurements made by the scorekeeper. I don't see how anyone can take those seriously.

As for Range Factor- once again, there's no context given. Range Factor doesn't tell us anything about the opportunities the player had. Even Bill James himself has deprecated the use of RF for more advanced statistical ratings, such as John Dewan's Plus/Minus system (which is essentially a simpler version of UZR).

Death to Flying Things aka Franklin Gutierrez had one of the greatest defensive seasons ever. What a stupid award the Gold Glove has become. They either need to completely rewrite the voting system or just get rid of it all together.
