i know derek jeter will get 3000 hits relatively soon.. Do you think he has a shot however at 4000? If he stays healthy he should have some good years left ahead of him?

And here's the weekly Jeter thread. Yaaaaaay!

It would take him 2-3 more seasons to get to 3000, I can see that happening. It would take him like 7 seasons of 200+ hits to get to 4000, right?

Never. Happening. Ever.

I think it's entirely possible he will get 3500+ perhaps close to 4000 but he is going to have to have the will to play past 40.

Sure he can, he has more hits than Rose had at this age. I don't see him playing till 45 though. I think he can, but I don't think he will.

as the majority will probably say, my opinion is that he will get to 3K.

4K is unlikely though

Not much of a stretch there on the 3k, he should have that in 2011. I agree no 4k. He'd have to play 10 more years or so.

Very, very doubtful that he'd reach 4000 hits.

Well, it all depends on how long he plays. The talent is there and it won't completely fade. Some milestones are based on longevity in the game and Jeter could certainly play into his 40's... I'm not so sure I want him as my shortstop then though

His grittyness and heart will drive him to the promised land.

Edit: No wait...I think the answer to this is, Barry Zito.

I like and respect Jeter, but no shot. Do the math

I thought it was like a "Greatest Hits" album. I'm guessing Bernie Williams was on alot of tracks as well

Well I find it very doubtful that he can play SS defensively past age 38 or 39. He already is below average in the league, so it is hard to envision him there five years down the road. In terms of batting, with his style, there is no reason to believe he can't be productive into his early 40's. Not out of the question to see him get 200 hits the next 3-4 seasons, and then 160-180 the next 2-3. I think he might come close...

This thread just has me :drool:ing over what could have been if Ichiro started his career here at age 21.

i think he can. look at the consistency he has shown year in and year out. if he wants to play until he is 42 or so it's not out of the question by any means. i don't know if anyone has pointed this out yet but it certainly doesn't hurt that he doesn't rely on power as much as most, either. he can just keep serving 'em up into right center. and lets be honest, he'll always be surrounded by great hitters so he will be protected year in year out. why not?

You know Rose played to his mid-40s, right?

Jeter can do it if it matters to him. Rose hung around long after he should have left because the record mattered to him.

I don't know whether Jeter feels the need to get that achievement so much that he is willing to play hobbled by age.

Jeet's at 2747. That's 1253 to go. Over 7 seasons, it would be 179 hits per. That's doable if he stays at the top of the lineup for a couple more years and avoids serious injury.

I have him at 3450 +/- 200

Problem is that he won't play SS past age 39 or 40, or if he does, he will be costing his team dearly defensively. Unfortunately, A-Rod is at 3B through 2017 so its hard to put Jeter anywhere else. Maybe DH or 1B?

You do realize that in the year Rose turned 40 he finished up the year with 3687 hits? Jeter is 940 short of that or 188 hits per year. He had the best year this year since 2006. He's liable to have more years like '08 (or worse) then '09 or '06 going forward. Plus he has to stay healthy. And even if he gets his 940 in the next five years, he's still 313 short of 4k. If Jeter is sitting at 3687 after 2014, then he'll probably push on, but I think he's at best 50/50 to make 3687 at that time, and well under 50/50 to get the next 313.
