View Full Version : Dye's option declined, becomes Free Agent - Who wants him?

White Sox declined outfielder Jermaine Dye's $12 million option for 2010.
He'll get a $1 buyout in a no-brainer move for the team. Dye had a strong 2008 and hit .302/.375/.567 with 20 homers in the first half this season, but fell apart in the second half while batting just .179 with seven homers in 60 games. Dye has bounced back from huge slumps before, but at 35 years old time may be running out.

Kind of an interesting name to add to the Free Agent mix. He could certainly help a lot of teams out if he comes at the right price.

Wont Boston need an OF?

Potentially. They've got a hole in LF with Bay becoming a Free Agent.

He cannot play the field anymore.

Jesus, Dye made $11.5 million last year!!!! These players are really getting overpaid these days...An aging average player who cannot really play in the field made that much? I know he was good back in the day, but come on now. When the Pirates total salary is $30some mil, how can we compete when mediocre talent out there gets paid $8+++ million???

Could you put up with some bad play in the field if the guy hits say .280 with 30+ HR's and 100+ RBI's for you?

He's been one of the most productive outfielders in baseball the last 5 years.

Not only bad defense, but he needs to DH to keep his body into shape and last a whole season. The last two months of this past season he was awful at the plate.

It's not bad, its god awful. Any offensive production he gives you gets instantly offset by his 0 range.

He also sucked it up the second half of this year, one of the reasons the Sox went downhill.

Dye's pricetag really took a hit in the second half. He was doing great in the first half, probably top 5-7 OF in the AL, but after the all-star game he was horrible, couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. He had a .950 OPS on July 18th, it all came crashing down after than, all the way to .793.

Sad really, I actually like Dye, but if he can't hit anymore, we all know how bad his defense is.

He could either be a bust or a great signing. It could go either way depending on the money. He had been good basically every season before 2009 so he could have a great 2010 or be horrible.

yo are correct, there are plenty of guys who are horrible fielders in the mlb. defense is important but sold offense easily makes up for it.

if you have a great CF that can cover alot of ground...play Dye 3 steps closer to the line and he will do fine..I persoanally think he was going strong the first half then the trade talks came out and the idea of not getting re-upped..HE TANKED...I bet he has a good 2010 its called proving he still can..

My guess is Texas. He could hit 40 HRs down there pretty easily.

Sox still don't have a DH. Carlos Quentin would be the ideal DH for the Sox, but a cheap deal with Dye at DH is not bad by any means. I honestly think Dye just got worn down by the end of the season. This guy can't play the field everyday anymore.

Texas needs a power bat and i can see him DHing there where he can stay healthy and hit between 20-25 homers. If i played in freezing Chicago for all these years id sign in Texas where its warm haha. Giants could use his bat but i dont know about Dye in ATNT park.

I could see him DHing for a small market AL team, Oakland or KC.

If the Padres keep Adrian Gonzales I could see him being a really nice right handed bat in the 3 hole in front of Adrian, he would see a ton of fastballs with AGon behind with RISP.

Jermaine Dye has San Francisco written all over him, i wouldn't mind him if hes not the only off season pickup we get. I'll take him on a 1 year 5 million ish deal.

Nah well stick him in left field and put him in da three hole for AGons protection

1.Cabrera (switch hitter, all star potential)
2. Eckstein (bats right)
3. DYE!!!( power bat RBI)
4.AGON ( Beast)
5. Blanks( All Star Potential reminds me of ryan howard at the plate)

Bad play sure.

Worst defender in the major leagues? Not so much.

UZR rates Dye as -20 to -25 runs in the OF per 150 games. Thats...really bad. Hit 30 homers and 100 RBI and all that and you probably end up only a couple runs in the black. It just isn't worth it. I doubt Dye is a 1win player again. He's only worth 2 mil or so in the OF.

Alot of local guys around here seem to think Texas is going to pursue Dye the most out of the right handed free agent bats. Texas desperately needs a right handed veteran with some pop who could play LF 1 or 2 times a week, but mainly DH. We need a cleanup hitter to protect Hamilton and I think Dye would be the perfect fit. In an article the other day I believe GM John Daniels even mentioned the possibility of Dye. I think it could be the piece our lineup needs to get back to it's pre 2009 form.

LF- Borbon
3B- Young
CF/DH- Hamilton
LF/DH- Dye
2B- Kinsler
1B- Davis/Smoak(if he's ready)
RF- Cruz
C- Pudge/ Teagarden or Salty, Teagarden may be on the move if Salty comes back healthy
SS- Elvis

It's not the most glamorous lineup, but with the young guys still developing, I like it.

you guys are all acting like he is a POS.

The guy is old - meaning he can't play the field.

The guy can still hit for a few more years.

A sleeper for somebody out there. Giants and i think the Rangers.

For any NL team he's probably worse than nothing at all.

In the Al he's a usable DH.

But that is about it.
