Scouting Report:

Phillies:2008 AL Cy Young winner Cliff Lee will face off against former teammate and 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner CC Sabathia in Game 1 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium. Lee is 4-4 with a 5.02 ERA in nine career starts against the Yankees, but is 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA in his last three against them. That included a 10-2 victory over the Yankees in the opening of new Yankee Stadium on April 16, when Lee still pitched for the Cleveland Indians.

The 30-year-old lefty, who had no prior playoff experience, has done nothing but dominate in October. He allowed three hits over eight shutout innings in the Phillies' 11-0 Game 3 victory over the Dodgers in the NLCS, lowering his 2009 postseason ERA to 0.74. Lee allowed one run during a complete-game victory in Game 1 of the Division Series against Colorado. In Game 4 of that series, he allowed three runs (one earned) in 7 1/3 innings. All told, that's two earned runs in 24 1/3 innings.

In his NLCS start, he almost got a chance to put up another zero and to become the third pitcher in the Wild Card era to toss two complete games in a single postseason. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel let Lee hit in the bottom of the eighth -- he singled -- and was going to send him out for the ninth. But once Shane Victorino hit a three-run home run, Manuel decided to entrust an 11-run lead to the bullpen. Lee had already thrown 114 pitches, but didn't appear to be tiring: He struck out two in a 10-pitch eighth inning.

"I don't think I ever doubted myself," said Lee, who had been demoted to Triple-A during the 2007 season before his breakout 2008 campaign. "I always had confidence in myself and felt like I could pitch in a big game. But you never know until you get the opportunity. It's a challenge."

YANKEES: Sabathia has been a rock for the Yankees all season and certainly a nice return on a heavy financial investment (seven years, $161 million). This is what they're paying him for, the kind of starts he's had in the postseason.

The big left-hander earned ALCS MVP honors for winning his two starts against the Angels, Games 1 and 4, after allowing just two runs in 16 innings (1.13 ERA), along with nine hits, three walks and 12 strikeouts. Overall in this postseason, Sabathia is 3-0 with a 1.19 ERA (three earned runs in 22 2/3 innings), 20 strikeouts and three walks.

In Game 1 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium, Sabathia (the 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner) faces former Indians teammate -- and 2008 AL Cy Young Award honoree -- Cliff Lee in a matchup of ace southpaws. In a start at the Stadium against the Phillies on May 24, Sabathia allowed three runs in eight innings on nine hits, with no walks and four strikeouts, in a no-decision. The Yankees lost that game, 4-3, in 11 innings.

Could turn out to be one of the greatest IMO.
Two best offenses, and even pitching matchups all the way through. I think it comes down to the bullpens, so I would be amazed to see this series go less than 6.

I just like Cliff Lee in this game. I know i guess im a homer but deal with it. Its gonna be a tough game regardless. Both pitchers are great an it prolly will come down to the BP but I think Lee will go 7 strong an Lidge just may be back to reasonable form. They hit CC well last year when he was tired but still that may get into his head a bit.

i would love to see the phils lose just because i hate them

and i would love to see the yanks lose with that payroll and see how much they spend this offseason.

so this is gonna be a win/loss series for me personally.

in all seriousness though, i think the yanks are gonna take it.
i just trust Burnett and Pettitte more than Hamels and Blanton.
both offenses are great so hopefully this is a slugf est. that'll be fun

I have a good feeling Phillies will win game one. Lee is going to be tough for the Yanks just like CC will be tough for the phils. Both teams have an incredible offense, and both of their bullpens are solid, but nothing fantastic. Although Rivera is an incredible pitcher, and Lidge has been much better in the playoffs. Can't wait. :)

Either way, I'm not THAT happy about the winner. I'm not a big supporter of the Philadelphia teams, but I obviously prefer them to the Yankees.

Though, at the same time, I'm not some silly Yankee hater, so I won't cry all offseason if they win the World Series.

It's going six or seven, regardless. My money's on the Phillies, but I won't be terribly surprised if I'm wrong. Either way, I'm glad people are still underestimating and doubting us. I like being the underdog while simultaneously being the defending champions.

We weren't supposed to beat the Rays, either. Hell, we weren't supposed to beat the Dodgers either season, according to most people.

I wasn't talking about what fans say at the game, they pay allot to go to the games, so they have that right. Not really fair to look at his career numbers before he turned into a legit ace. He's not the same pitcher and I expect him to pitch very well.

And 9 starts, and certainly 3, isn't enough of a sample size to really take anything away from. Lee has been very good the last few seasons and I expect he'll pitch well. But I certainly wouldn't base my judgement off 3 games worth of stats

Yeah, Utley probably wants to redeem himself for not doing much in the nlcs i think he could be due for a big game. Im not sure about tex i didnt really follow him through the Alcs every thing seemed to be about Arod.

On to CC and Lee, I think they both come out with some nerves let some men on base to begin but i think they both will be fine and pitch well it could come down to the bullpens in game 1.

I don't think it makes your fanbase appear anymore intelligent to judge the entirety of ours based on a few over zealous fans. I try to stay away from generalizations and name calling. We have alot of fans as do you. I was at the game last night and it seemed every Eagles fan was trying to start a fight for no reason at all. It was quite embarrasing for them, but I'm sure they just thought they were being tough, or cool, or gangsta, or whatever. But I wouldn't saay all eagles fans are *******s.

Top 3 are pretty much even but we have the benefit of having a very underrated Joe Blanton who has been a great pitcher since becoming a philly and we have the rookie of the year in Happ. Our starting pitching is deeper and better. Be careful... Our pitchers have much more experience pitching in a hitters park then the Yanks pitchers do. The Yankees have been doing it for a season where the Phillies have done it for several.

I'm guessing we will have at least 1 or 2 games come down to the bullpens and that could go either way for either team (Hammer of God excluded of course) middle relief for both teams have had their rough moments this postseason.

I'm licking my chops right now thinking of Joba & Phillip :D

We'z gon rock him!!!!!

I think he can be a solid pitcher. But he hasn't been as lights out as he was last season. He's been shaky this post season and has escaped a few jams unscathed. He's been solid I guess, but a bit shaky. We'll see if we can break him, but he'll definitely bend once at least.

When you underestimate the Phillies, you get your *** kicked. Take it from a Mets fan who dealt with them the past few years.

Phillies in 6. At least they have good arms in the outfield. And you have a ROTY in Happ in the bullpen, so if a starter gets out early, Philly fans don't need to worry.

Yankees in 3. The Phillies will realize they cannot win and not bother showing up for game 4.

Due to inclement weather and monday night football the yankees will win game one in old RFK stadium and game two in the Notre Dame football stadium. Game 3 is tied at 4 in the 16th inning when Bud Selig decides that the winner should be determined by the all-star game. Thus Yankees win.

Now Jimmy Rollins is calling the Phillies the "Team to Beat" in this World Series, too. It was Rollins who irritated the Mets before the 2007 season by brashly proclaiming his Phillies the favorite in the NL East, then backed it up by winning the MVP in leading his club to the division title.

And Monday night, with Game 1 of the World Series opening in the Bronx only 48 hours away, Rollins poked the Yankees by predicting a Phillies win in five games on "The Jay Leno Show." Asked by Leno to call the Fall Classic, Rollins flashed his wide smile and embraced the villain's role.

"Oh, man, well of course we're going to win," Rollins said. "If we're nice, we'll let it go six. But I'm thinking five and close it out at home."

Why is that ridiculous? The major advantage the Phillies have at home is that they get to hit last. Problem is they have to face the best pitcher in playoff history in that last inning.

Yankees have a better offense, rotation and bullpen... though offense is very close.

Its going to come down to pitching and the Yankees is better.

Yankees sweep this series When Pedro Martinez is your #2 starter, you are in trouble. Maybe if it was the Pedro of 10 years ago, and yes I know he has pitched well, but he hasnt faced a lineup nearly as explosive as the Yankees. The Dodgers couldnt pitch or hit and the Rockies were just a warm up...

For once the Yanks have pitching, and when you have great pitching with that lineup, its deadly...
