Wow I mean come on is he serious thats got to be a joke. So Portland goes from tied for 2nd in the west to 11th um ok because Miller will be just a terrible fit in Portland and Oden hasn't come anywhere from where he was just a year ago. Oh well he writes for ESPN what should I expect nothing but ignorance from Simmons in my opinion. Oh and lets not forget Portland was the only team to take the season series from the champs last year.

And the reason for the Lakers for not being number one is that he hates the Lakers.

As far as ESPN predictions go, I think their average of all their experts' rankings (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/preview2009/news/story?page=Predictions-Standings0910) comes down much more firmly in realistic-land than Simmons way-too-far-out jive:

Rank Team Average Ranking
1 Cleveland Cavaliers 1.7
2 Boston Celtics 2.1
3 Orlando Magic 2.2

4 Atlanta Hawks 4.5

5 Washington Wizards 6.3
6 Chicago Bulls 6.4
7 Toronto Raptors 7.3
8 Miami Heat 7.6
9 Philadelphia 76ers 8.5
10 Detroit Pistons 8.7

11 Indiana Pacers 11.2

12 Charlotte Bobcats 12.4
13 New York Knicks 12.5

T-14 Milwaukee Bucks 14.3
T-14 New Jersey Nets 14.3

Rank Team Average Ranking
1 Los Angeles Lakers 1.0

2 San Antonio Spurs 2.1

3 Denver Nuggets 3.8
4 Portland Trail Blazers 3.9

5 Dallas Mavericks 5.1
6 Utah Jazz 6.1
7 New Orleans Hornets 6.6

8 Phoenix Suns 8.0

9 Los Angeles Clippers 9.3
10 Houston Rockets 10.3
11 Oklahoma City Thunder 11.1
12 Golden State Warriors 11.6

13 Memphis Grizzlies 13.0
14 Minnesota Timberwolves 13.3

15 Sacramento Kings 14.8

Where there's over 1.0 difference in average ranking, I put in spaces. I don't fully agree with all the tier groupings, but I think it comes fairly close.

10-24-2009, 10:13 AM
Well while everyone is calling him an idiot, Ill add my 2cents.

Andy G (New York) : Being a Cavs fan, I'm really scared of the Magic. Mike Brown might be the primary reason for us to lose, plus our frontline is biggest weakness. Also, the Magic have a lot of bodies to throw at Lebron. I think the series will go to 7. Plus it's a terrible match-up for the Cavs.

SportsNation Bill Simmons: The Magic just needed 7 games to beat a Celtics team that had 2 scorers with dead legs, Scalabrine/Marbury/House as their bench and actually ran a game-ending play for Glen Davis. Don't start thinking Orlando is good please.

yan (Southboro MA): Can people stop talking about the Magic. I just watched my depleted and tired team that didn't have a night where its two players each perform well (Pierce and Allen) almost beat them in 6 games.

SportsNation Bill Simmons: And probably would have if PP makes those 2 FT's with 3 mins to go in Game 6... that swung the series. Agreed. Let's all settle down on the Magic. They will be lucky to win 1 game.

opi (Austin,TX): "Don't start thinking Orlando is good please?" Bill, basketball is all about matchups -- you know that, and Orlando pretty much owned the regular season series but for 1 super close game in Cleveland. The other 2 games were won by about 30 points...not sure any other team in the NBA can say that with respect to Cleveland.

SportsNation Bill Simmons: Sure. This is why Cleveland is -800 to win the series. Go to Vegas and bet on the Magic, they are dying to take your money.

Chating with a hater. Don't start thinking Orlando is good guys.
I wish he went to Vegas, his *** would be broke.

I agree but if Portland regresses, all it would take is for Baron to return to form, Blake to be above average at his position, Kaman to return to form, and EG continuing his ascension. And all are very plausible scenarios given the history of the players. Baron usually follows up his worst season with the best of his career, and by all accounts is in the best shape of his life right now. Expect him to bounce back, EG showed progress all year no reason to doubt he cant continue that, if he doesnt hes still near average.

Kaman plays good every other year, why not now?

The Rockets have always been underrated from a supporting cast standpoint, its why Tmac was overrated in 07-08, the team was able to win 22 in a row, despite Tmac playing bad and Yao being out half the time. Since then theyve only improved the depth. 2 things will either be confirmed this year on the Rockets.

Either Yao is the most underrated defender of ALLTIME and the Rockets defense slips to depths of impecuniousness or they sustain a defensive efficiency level enough to win games on defense. In which case 41 isnt out of the question

This should pretty much confirm what most true basketball fans already know. Bill Simmons is a basketball idiot. I simply do not know what else to say. This guy has no business writing or talking about the NBA. But some people do think he is a so-called expert, so we will let the games play out and see what happens. I am sure that when most of his predictions do not come to fruition he will have some kind of excuse as to why this team or that team did not perform as well as he expected.

How have they gotten so much better, and your telling me their better than Utah, Dallas... and Denver who he's got in 8th. That's ridiculous Denver in 8 is a joke... i think they're easily top 4, and could finish in the top 2. I don't expect San Antonio to win 64 games... your talking about an old team, which isn't aiming to win huge amount of games, as opposed to getting into the playoffs healthy, and with a top 3-4seed.

And if the Portland Trailblazers were the Boston Trailblazers or somewhere out of a major east coast market he would be all over the nuggets. His columns should be purely taken as entertainment and humor. The sad part is he is serious and thinks he is objective. He is easily one of the most transparent writers on ESPN. His allegiances show through every story he writes.

I actually dont think the blazers finishing that far back is too far fetched, maybe more like 8th or 9th, they have chemistry issues, unless they gel quickly

Well, it only stays on for the half of the season or after the all-star game.

How is that possible?

We'd have to wait until the end of the season to see who has the better record.

Straight up buster in the making, 8th or 9th seed, your Jazz may end up there though, if Boozer starts making a stink about getting traded or Kirelenko starts whinning about playing time.

Their isnt chemistry issues in Portland, you think that because Miller is coming off the bench, That will last all of about 5 games. Besides if Miller didnt work out no biggie because we still have our starting PG from last yr we still have our entire team from last yr, who happens to work really good with Roy anyway so if he starts for a while until Miller gets rolling good that's fine with Blazer fans. Miller has actually had a good in preseason anyway but we need more out of him to be the started and cut the turnovers mainly.

The Jazz may have beaten the Blazers in preseason but your not gonna see a Juwan Howard and Jarron Collins starting lineup in the regular season, trust me your Jazz will see plenty of our real frontline in the regular season!

All BS aside I couldnt see the Jazz finishing lower than 5th or 6th but niether will the Blazers

And the reason for the Lakers for not being number one is that he hates the Lakers.
I read his article and clearly, he's a Celtics fan.
He's all like "deepest team, eastern conference is weak" and as for the Lakers, he's all like "I hate when Pau Gasol barks like a dog"
this guy fails! oh come on son! hes no celtics fan! but bill simmons is a tool yo

By the way he hammered on the Blazers on this one, I'd say the whole team layed pipe in her (Paul Allen too)
Bill Simmons probably was there taping it, then got mad after she went behind his back for seconds.
By the way he did the Nuggets also, Id bet they had a few players involved in the party too.

Don't think he thought this article out, Portland is my #2 seed and is no worse than a #5

Pretty cool he picked the Bulls 4th but honestly the Hawks are better. 5th seed easily as the Wizards and Raptors are joke rosters.

How is that? They just lost one of their best players and did not bring in any significant additions while most of the other teams in the East have improved. If we were talking about last year's Bulls, then I would very much agree.

Gordon was a one dimensional player that couldn't defend. As much as he scored he gave up just as much on the other end. Now we have more of a traditional lineup with Rose, Salmons, Deng, Tyrus and Noah starting.

His Rankings are a Joke...
Bulls 4th(Hawks are clearly the 4th Best Team in the East)
San Antonio 1st(They can be the 1 seed, if the Artest plan bombs but unlikely)
L.A. Clippers 6th( )

And he has the Portland Trailblazers out and Houston in

It isnt out of the realm of possibility fro Chicago to get the 4 seed because they could make a deal for Boozer happen and I think that would vault them into that kinda seed.

On the flipside Bill Simmons is a pud and shouldnt ever be able to touch a pen or a keyboard again.

Lets see how the 3 teams stack up (Bulls, Wizards, and Hawks)

PG. Derick Rose > Gilbert Arenas > Mike Bibby
SG. Joe Johnson > Mike Miller = John Salmons
SF. Caron Butler > Marvin Williams > Luol Deng
PF. Josh Smith > Antawn Jamison > Tyrus Thomas
C. Al Horford > Joakim Noah > Brendan Haywood

So on paper it looks like:
1. Atlanta Hawks
2. Washington Wizards
3. Chicago Bulls

There is no way the Spurs get that many wins. Pop will be resting some of the core to keep them healthy for playoffs-esp. Manu and Timmy. He'll be willing to let the others play and sacrifice a few wins if it means health later.
The rankings overall are pretty strange.

ok , i thought this dude was a total douche til i read this :laugh2:

8. Shaquille O'Neal
Red flag No. 1: He's 835 pounds. Red flag No. 2: He has never successfully pulled off the whole "sidekick" thing; even to the bitter end, he was playing the big brother/little brother routine with Dwyane Wade. Red flag No. 3: He's splitting time with Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who might be a better fit for this particular team because of his outside shooting. Red flag No. 4: He has never, ever, ever, not in his entire life, played for a coach as offensively challenged as Mike Brown. Red flag No. 5: He doesn't have the luxury of Phoenix's training staff anymore. Red flag No. 6: He's so fat that it's like looking at one of those TVs where the HD is screwed up so it makes everyone seem wider. Red flag No. 7: The Suns traded him for two guys who they immediately bought out for a combined $14 million. Red flag No. 8: The Cavs are better off if he's playing 15-20 minutes a game and that's it. Red flag No. 9: He's so fat that it's possible Delonte West was packing three guns because he got confused and thought Shaq wanted to eat him. Red flag No. 10: He's awfully close to some records, which will make it awkward if Cleveland tries to reduce his playing time.
