SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Bobby Jackson is retiring from the NBA.

The 12-year veteran guard, who spent six seasons with Sacramento, made the announcement Friday night before the Kings' preseason finale against the Utah Jazz.

Jackson averaged 9.7 points per game in his career. He was the league's Sixth Man of the Year in 2002-03 with averages of 15.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

The former University of Minnesota star played for Sacramento last season but was not re-signed in the offseason.

"It's a tough day for me because I'm retiring from professionally playing the game I love," he said. "But it's also a happy day because I'm retiring on my own terms."

Jackson will work with the Kings as an ambassador, promoting the team in local appearances and handling some scouting.

He had some good battles back in the day against the Lakers when that rivalry was at it's highest point. A great scoring threat off of the bench.

It's a shame, I heard rumors of him coming to Cleveland to be our back up PG, but it's always better to see a player retire from his own will rather than be forced into it by injury, like he said.

Thanks for all the memories Bobby. He always played 100%, and it's a shame we couldn't put it all together and get him a championship. I'm happy to know that he is going to stay within the organization and be part of the front office.

Good player, sad to see him retire but he was old. A solid player for many years for the Kings, even this past season off the bench.
