10 seems like an awfully high number with this many people -- can we cut them all down to five?

I applaud your bravery, I debated voting for Reagan but I figure he's going down like the Titanic so I jumped ship.

I asked for suggestions in off-topic, I would have put him in if someone would have mentioned him.

I asked for suggestions in off-topic, I would have put him in if someone would have mentioned him.
I would have gone with:
Carter
W
Reagan
Clinton
Teddy Roosevelt
JFK

For some reason I see parallels between the Ds and Rs on that list. And you keep out Washington, Lincoln, and FDR because come on. Mismatch.

I applaud your bravery, I debated voting for Reagan but I figure he's going down like the Titanic so I jumped ship.
I'll go down with the ship.

Washington was a puppet. I believe he lost 3 times as many battles as he won and him being appointed the first president had more to to do with him owning more property than any other person in the U.S. and the fact that the rest of the founding fathers knew he wasn't clever enough to take exclusive control of the country. America has some of the most grandiose founding myths of any country.

I am on pretty safe ground, well maintained by the body of work of every noted historian I have ever read, when I once again say, without apology, secret evasion, or mental reservation, that Washington is considered the indispensable president.

Your position on him as a general is based on the early part of the war, but as the war moved on, he grew as a the top general. That aside, I never said he was the finest general in the nations history, just the indispensable president.

I am not going to presume to set myself up as someone who you are ever going to learn from, so, instead I offer you these books and authors:

1776 by David McCullough
Founding Father: Rediscovering George Washington by Richard Brookhiser
George Washington, The Indispensable Man by James Flexner
The Genius of George Washington by Edmund Morgan

All fine books to answer your question.

If, after having read these books, as I have, you still want to debate the importance of Washington, I will be happy to exchange views.

Being a good commander and leader was less about overwhelming battlefield successes and more about understanding your capabilities and resources and using them as effectively as possible.

I forgot about Founding Brothers, it is super. The lack of understanding about the Continentals is huge when looking at what a commander truly was. Now this is not to say that Washington did not need, and subsequently did grow into the job of commander. But this discussion is about his later job as President of the United States, and I have read about 15 books in the last couple of years on that period, and with each book, I have felt my admiration for Washington grow each time.

Gotta update your numbers there HCF. I snuck my votes in before you. That or the next person has to do some math.

Will have to go back and look. Though was on my way out of the house so very well may have screwed it up.

Once you get past Carter you pretty much have to go on how they are viewed by history. Since I'd venture a guess that the number of people on this board that followed politics before that would be very minimal.
