View Full Version : Who is the most underrated "role" player in the league?

TannerOwnsDevin
09-26-2009, 07:37 PM
i think its trevor ariza, and after signing his big contract im expecting him to be an 18 ppg 5 rpg and 3 apg player in houston. my other pick is birdman anderson. i think he's a huge reason why the nuggets bench is so effective.

whose yours?

lol, Trevor Ariza isn't underrated.

i think he is, maybe not by laker fans, but in terms of his celing, trevor is definitely better than what people have seen from his last year. if trevor works a little bit more on his ballhandling skills and bulks an extra 10 lbs, he can be a solid 20 ppg, 6 rpg, 3 apg, and 1.6 spg player. thing i like about trevor is he picks his posts wisely and does'nt disrupt rhythm.

I don't think Ariza has a good enough offensive game to get 20 PPG.

Shane Battier. Defensive minded small forward who can shoot the three.

TannerOwnsDevin
09-26-2009, 08:04 PM
trev averaged 9 ppg with very limited touches in los angeles. trevor also improved his perimeter touch last year, his 15 footer is very respectable. he was also la's second best three pointer after kobe. he already is a strong finisher and with improved ball handling skills, he can reach the 20 ppg plateau. obviously he wont average that much in a championship team, but for a lottery bound franchise like houston, he can absolutely do it.

Kendrick Perkins.

No one plays their role better than this guy. He understands who he is playing with and knows all they want is strong defense and rebounding and he is excellent at both.

its a bit more then that, every player has a role on a team. kobe is a leader, lebrons a leader, those are roles, a role player is one that isnt the highest scorer or the best rebounder or racks the most assists..but compliments those players that do,and does the little things. thats my take it on anyways.

Kendrick Perkins. The guy is a beast, and controls the paint. If it was just KG in the middle for beantown, they wouldn't be that great of a defensive team over the last couple years. I mean he really shut down D12 in the playoffs last year.

Anderson Varejao is a underrated role player he can f/c he gets to the ball on d and get a all around Hustler.

jetsfan28
09-27-2009, 01:14 AM
LOL, Ariza might be the most OVERRATED role player

Anyway, I'll go with Steve Blake. Very quietly put up a +/- per minute of .179 last year, as despite not being a big scorer or being great at anything, he makes huge contributions with solid defense, good passing, and good overall feel for the game that helps that very young team a ton. Perfect role player in a perfect situation.

I was tempted to say Delonte West, but he has become more known recently to the point where he isn't as underrated.

well, now that ariza is on a team with no kobe, no gasol, not having to deal with the potential of bynum, and not having to share bench minutes with lamar (like he did in the beginning of the season when vlad rad or luke was starting at SF), I think his time of being a role player is over. with yao, u now have brooks and scola developing well, to go along with t-mac, who'll be comin' back from that microfracture surgery, so he won't be FULLY 100%, but I do hope he gets to that point sometime during the season. So with all of that be said, late October-December should be Trevor's time to shine before T-Mac is "fully or close to fully" healthy. T-Mac willl be a little rusty the first month or so, and I think Ariza will be capable of avg around 15-16 ppg and around 2+ steals a game for the Rockets those first 2 months of the season

Two years ago, it was definitely Bruce Bowen. Now I think the best role player was Trevor Ariza, but he wasn't underrated. I'd go with the Nuggets' Birdman and Cavs' Z Ilgauskus. Birdman was just flat out impressive especially when they played the Lakeshow in the conference finals. Z is underrated IMO

NBAfan4life

Scola, barbosa, or Perkins IMO

I considered it, but Blake is a bit more consistent IMO, which pushes him over the top for me

LOL at guys like Lee, Prince, Battier, Artest, Kirlenko, Barbosa, Calderon, etc., these guys are some of the most well known and highly touted role players in the league, almost all of them at worst slightly underrated, some overrated.

I think Manu Ginobili will be more of a role-player than a star this season. In that case, it's him. In another case, it's the Bird Man.

JayW_1023
09-28-2009, 06:50 AM
^^^

I must say I agree. Manu has always been an intangibles guy because of his versatility. But I reckon that if he stays healthy, he will play more aggressively as the season progresses.

Trevor Ariza is one of the most overratted I expect him to average 11ppg 5rpg and 2spg I think as far as PSD goes Joe Johnson is the most underrated player but the most underrated role player probably is like Josh Smith or Tayshaun Prince

no he wont, trevor could get 14 or16 per game. he wont go from 9 to 20 because houston isnt as good. he isnt a scorer that makes his own plays, heis more def. and put backs with a 3 thrwn in now and again. von wafer was more what your describing.but you let him go. ariza is good just not that good.

09-28-2009, 03:51 PM
prolly John Salmons, maybe not anymore since he's on the Bulls, but when on the Sac Kings, he averaged like 20 points off the bench or something ridiculous!

Illuminati999
09-28-2009, 07:20 PM
Everyone plays a "role"... to win at all costs. If you're talking about bench player... Jason Terry and Manu Ginobili are in a league of their own. JR Smith and Nate Robinson are right behind.

Last year for the Mavs, Terry practically WAS the bench. Manu has been utilized similarly, to provide a spark off the bench, often times becoming the entire bench as well.
